Colombia (/kəˈlʌmbiə/ kə-LUM-biə or /kəˈlɒmbiə/ kə-LOM-biə; Spanish: [koˈlombja]), officially the Republic of Colombia (Spanish: República de Colombia ), is a country situated in the northwest of South America, bordered to the northwest by Panama; to the east by Venezuela and Brazil; to the south by Ecuador and Peru; and it shares maritime limits with Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, Jamaica, Dominican Republic and Haiti. It is a unitary, constitutional republic comprising thirty-two departments.
The territory of what is now Colombia was originally inhabited by indigenous peoples including the Muisca, Quimbaya, and Tairona. The Spanish arrived in 1499 and initiated a period of conquest and colonization ultimately creating the Viceroyalty of New Granada, with its capital at Bogotá. Independence from Spain was won in 1819, but by 1830 "Gran Colombia" had collapsed with the secession of Venezuela and Ecuador. What is now Colombia and Panama emerged as the Republic of New Granada. The new nation experimented with federalism as the Granadine Confederation (1858), and then the United States of Colombia (1863), before the Republic of Colombia was finally declared in 1886.Panama seceded in 1903.

Our journey takes us through some fabulous landscapes while stopping off to discover cities such as Cali, Medellin and Cartagena. Not forgetting the rural regions and encounters with Amerindians, plus some prestigious archaeological sites like the Ciudad Perdida (lost city). Our journey is by road, not by plane despite the long distances involved. This way we get a closer look at the daily life of local inhabitants and take in the wide variety of natural landscapes.

I use my blog to keep track of the astonishing variety of culture, food, nature, music, activities, hotspots and everything else that I love so much about the magical wonderland that is Colombia. The thing that captivates me most about Colombia is its unmatched diversity. Yet despite such tremendous diversity there is one thing that everyone who visits Colombia agrees on; the friendliness and joy of the people is what most makes you want to stay.

In September 2015 I spent two weeks in Cali, Colombia, on a Fulbright-sponsored project, visiting the Universidad del Valle (University of the Valley). Nicknamed Univalle, the university is named for the Cauca River Valley in the western part of the country. The purpose of my visit was to meet with students and professors in a research center in the School of Engineering that specializes in automation and machine intelligence, to look for opportunities for collaboration between Univalle and the University of Idaho, where I teach. Cali is known for music and dancing, especially salsa. The city hosts two major music festivals every year: Mono Nuñez, which features Andean music, and Petronio Alvarez, focusing on Afro-Colombian music from the Pacific coast. In Buenaventura, many of the town's 450,000 inhabitants fled the country's rural areas to escape violence and are not registered for social security and national health care benefits. Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is providing medical assistance to this population and helping them gain access to the national healthcare system. From Month in Focus 2011.
Four decades of conflict in southern Colombia have made health care a rare commodity on the Rio Caguan, a remote tributary of the Amazon. Villagers must travel 500 kilometres or more by boat to the nearest hospital. Abdi Ismail, an ICRC delegate, explains his work taking mobile health clinics along the river to thousands of villagers who would otherwise be cut off from medical care.
In the Cauca mountains in Colombia, most of the population lives in rural communities that are affected by the conflict between the armed groups and the government forces which has plagued the area for the past 50 years. Despite a decrease in the amount of harassment, attacks and fighting, people continue to live in fear, pain and silence. Access to mental health services in the isolated villages of the mountains is non-existent. MSF psychologists do both individual and group therapy sessions in municipal hospitals and villages.
For more than a decade, the United States' war on drugs in Colombia has partially relied on crop dusting to kill the plants used to produce cocaine. But this week, Colombia's government announced that it will phase out the U.S.-led program. Juan Forero, the South American bureau chief for The Wall Street Journal joins Hari Sreenivasan via Skype from Bogota, Colombia, to discuss how this policy shift may affect U.S.-Colombia relations. Today's Medellin drug cartels are highly structured and run much like multinational corporations. But violent gangs operating in the city's slums provide the muscle; known as combos, they’ve carved Medellin into fiefdoms, imposing invisible borders between gang territory — borders that, when ignored, often get people killed. VICE News travelled to Medellin to meet gang members — along with top cartel leaders and assassins — who revealed the inner workings of the city's modern-day cocaine industry. A narcotics trafficking submarine has been discovered by authorities in Colombia. It's believed the vessel is able to travel from Colombia to the coasts of Mexico. The submarine was found in a river in the state of Cauca, about 400 kilometres southwest of the capital Bogota. Authorities found weapons nearby, but said no one was arrested and no drugs were found when they made the discovery. British anti-narcotics officers have spoken openly for the first time about their mission in Colombia. Until now little was known about their work in the country. But speaking exclusively to the BBC, the National Crime Agency, often dubbed Britain's FBI, has revealed it is involved in intelligence and logistical operations, working closely with Colombian forces. Despite a recent rise in the production of cocaine, British officers insist they are making a difference in the so-called war on drugs. Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News The United Nations announced in 2013 that Peru has overtaken Colombia as the world’s top producer of coca, the raw plant material used to manufacture cocaine. For the past two decades, Colombia has been virtually synonymous with cocaine. Now that Peru has become the global epicenter of cocaine production, the Andean nation runs the risk of becoming the world’s next great narco state. The Peruvian government is trying to crack down on the problem by ramping up eradication of coca plants, and devoting military and police resources to interdiction efforts. Despite the response — and a hefty amount of foreign aid devoted to combatting cocaine production — Peruvian coke is being consumed in the nightclubs of Lima and in cities ...

Colombia has overtaken Peru to be the world’s largest producer of cocaine, according to newly-released information likely to dismay President Juan Manuel Santos and his American allies. The UN's latest figures show that last year Colombia grew more coca than Peru and Bolivia combined. In 2014 Colombia had 69,000 hectares of coca; Peru had 42,900 and Bolivia 20,400. The UN estimates that cocaine production will rise 52 per cent in 2015, after the government halted aerial spraying of the crop, citing concerns that the herbicides used may cause cancer. Experts also believe that the surge in cocaine planting is due to farmers believing that a peace deal with Farc rebels, due to be signed by March, will see benefits for those who abandon their coca crops. I can make cocaine,
I just fell in love with a Cuban
I just love Colombia,
Always making bricks, me and Hector.
Teach them how to remix got me metratons,
Isabella, that’s her little sister
She loves me cause I know where them bricks came
I can serve you, I pour drinks, too.
But I can make cocaine,
I promise you I’ll never see you out of there
I fly back to Colombia
I always make a million out of run.
I can make cocaine,
I just fell in love with a Cuban,
I just love Colombia
And how we get ‘em in by a metraton.
I can make cocaine,
I just fell in love with a Cuban,
I just love Colombia
And how we get ‘em in by a metraton.
I can make cocaine,
It don’t take but eight minutes to make the whole
thing,
But have you selling metraton,
You can cut one for a million.
Let me go sitting on packs long distance
Put my stove in the bathroom, not the kitchen,
Walk in an then you see sixty pistols,
By any mean necessary about them bricks fool.
I was selling bricks since highschool,
Pour a long ride when I slap you
But I don’t sell dog food,
Fill out your application, come to brick school.
I can make cocaine,
I just fell in love with a Cuban,
I just love Colombia
And how we get ‘em in by a metraton.
I can make cocaine
I just fell in love with a Cuban
I just love Colombia
