Our tour starts in the capital, Bogotá, before heading southward across the Andes as far as Popayàn. We then head back north to the coastline of the Caribbean Sea. Our journey takes us through some fabulous landscapes while stopping off to discover cities such as Cali, Medellin and Cartagena. Not forgetting the rural regions and encounters with Amerindians, plus some prestigious archaeological sites like the Ciudad Perdida (lost city).
Our journey is by road, not by plane despite the long distances involved. This way we get a closer look at the daily life of local inhabitants and take in the wide variety of natural landscapes.

Notorious for its social and economic problems (poverty, drug-trafficking and armed militia forces), Colombia is actually a little-known country in that the majority of received images more often than not filter through news media reporting. There are many groups and agencies offering eco-tourism and it is very usual to find trekking plans (locally named 'caminatas' or 'excursiones') on weekend; many groups (named 'caminantes') offers cheaper one day excursion, special trips (on long weekends or during periods of vacation time (January, Holy Week, July, August, October, December) to different places in the country. Some recommended groups based out of Bogotá are: Viajar y Vivir, Fundación Sal Si Puedes, Caminantes del Retorno; there are many other. Patianchos in Medellín; Rastros in Bucaramanga. They usually offer guidance and transportation to the place; on long trips include lodging and other services. The recommendation is asking if the guide has the official certification.

Discurso de Rodrigo Londoño Timoleón Jiménez, Alias Timochenko comandante de las FARC EP y de Juan Manuel Santos, Presidente del Gobierno de la República Nacional de Colombia en el acto histórico donde se firmaron los acuerdos de paz entre el gobierno y las FARC en Cartagena Colombia. Septiembre 26 de 2016.
El primero de los dos protagonistas de la firma en hablar fue “Timoleón Jiménez”, máximo líder de las Farc. Su discurso fue un extenso recorrido por la historia del grupo que nació en Marquetalia hace 52 años, y que desde ese entonces no dejó de estar enfrentado con el Estado. También hizo amplias referencias a artistas, políticos, guerrilleros y pensadores colombianos, que inspiraron su lucha armada que este 26 de septiembre quedó atrás. “Timochenko” destacó el paso de esa lucha con las armas a la lucha con ideas y argumentos al entrar oficialmente a la democracia nacional.
El cenit del discurso fue el momento que todo el país esperaba y por el que preguntaban los detractores del proceso. Ante los 2.500 invitados a la ceremonia y los millones de televidentes y radioescuchas que presenciaban el discurso del líder de las Farc, pidió perdón a las víctimas del conflicto armado por los actos del hasta hoy grupo alzado en armas. Fue quizá su discurso más político, en el que arremetió contra el sistema en general. Lanzó palabras contra la política tradicional, la publicidad, los medios de comunicación, el sistema de salud y los gastos de guerra.
El encargado del cierre, fue el presidente Santos, quien hizo toda la apuesta por la paz. En un discurso en el que evocó la violencia que azota hace 70 años al país desde la época del bipartidismo, le dio la bienvenida a la democracia al jefe de las Farc, alias Timochenko, y a los miembros de esa guerrilla.
Compartiendo la misma mesa con quien fue su enemigo durante décadas, Santos dijo: “Señor Rodrigo Londoño y miembros de las Farc: hoy, cuando emprenden su camino de regreso a la sociedad; cuando comienzan su tránsito a convertirse en un movimiento político, sin armas; siguiendo las reglas de justicia, verdad y reparación contenidas en el Acuerdo –como Jefe de Estado, de la patria que todos amamos– les doy la bienvenida a la democracia”.
El mandatario también invitó a los colombianos para que voten “Sí” en el plebiscito, con el que el próximo domingo se refrendará lo pactado con las Farc. “Con su voto, el próximo domingo 2 de octubre, podremos dejar atrás un pasado triste y abrirle las puertas a un futuro mejor, con alegría y optimismo”, agregó Santos.
Aunque el acuerdo fue cerrado hace un mes en La Habana, el acontecimiento es de tal magnitud que se le presentó al mundo por lo alto. Cerca de 2.500 invitados entre los que estaban 15 jefes de Estado, entre ellos el cubano Raúl Castro, anfitrión de las conversaciones auspiciadas también por Noruega, Venezuela y Chile; el jefe de la diplomacia estadounidense, John Kerry; el secretario general de la ONU, Ban Ki-moon; el rey emérito de España, Juan Carlos, y numerosos representantes de organismos internacionales.
También tuvieron un espacio especial las víctimas del conflicto, negociadores, congresistas, ministros y organizaciones promotoras de la paz y la reconciliación. Todos se dieron cita en Cartagena para anunciarle al mundo que el conflicto más antiguo de occidente es cosa del pasado. Ahora el camino es construir la reconciliación de los colombianos y cumplir con los puntos acordados: desarrollo agrario integral, participación política, solución al problema de drogas, garantías de reparación y no repetición a las víctimas y fin del conflicto.

Cartagena de Indias vive este lunes una jornada histórica. Tras más de medio siglo de conflicto armado entre la guerrilla de las FARC y el Gobierno colombiano, la ciudad caribeña es testigo de la firma de la paz entre ambas partes. "Bienvenidos todos, siéntanse en su casa. Ustedes saben que Cartagena es nuestra joya, la 'ciudad heroica' que ya no solamente será heroica sino que será la 'ciudad de la paz'", ha señalado el presidente Juan Manuel Santos.
Acostumbrada a ese agradable reposo caribeño que atrapó a Gabriel García Márquez, Cartagena recordará el 26 de septiembre de 2016 como un día atípico. Las calles tomadas por la seguridad (2.700 unidades de la Fuerza Pública, entre policía y ejército), el centro histórico repleto de líderes latinoamericanos y representantes de los organismos internacionales todos vestidos de blanco (el código de vestimenta de la paz), más de 1.000 periodistas de cualquier rincón del mundo y una sensación de perplejidad y curiosidad entre sus habitantes.
La jornada ha comenzado con un acto a puerta cerrada del presidente colombiano con la cúpula militar y de la policía. "Esto que estamos firmando el día de hoy es su victoria, la victoria de nuestras Fuerzas. Ustedes realmente son los responsables de que estemos dando este paso en la historia de Colombia", ha declarado el mandatario, que a mediodía ha asistido a una ceremonia litúrgica en la Iglesia de San Pedro Claver, oficiada por el cardenal Pietro Parolín, secretario de estado del Vaticano. "Dios siempre estuvo presente. Yo le rezaba mucho a Dios para que me inspirara y guiara en muchas de las decisiones que había que tomar", ha dicho Santos.

Colombia (/kəˈlʌmbiə/ kə-LUM-biə or /kəˈlɒmbiə/ kə-LOM-biə; Spanish: [koˈlombja]), officially the Republic of Colombia (Spanish: 
República de Colombia ), is a country situated in the northwest of South America, bordered to the northwest by Panama; to the east by Venezuela and Brazil; to the south by Ecuador and Peru; and it shares maritime limits with Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, Jamaica, Dominican Republic and Haiti. It is a unitary, constitutional republic comprising thirty-two departments.
The territory of what is now Colombia was originally inhabited by indigenous peoples including the Muisca, Quimbaya, and Tairona. The Spanish arrived in 1499 and initiated a period of conquest and colonization ultimately creating the Viceroyalty of New Granada, with its capital at Bogotá. Independence from Spain was won in 1819, but by 1830 "Gran Colombia" had collapsed with the secession of Venezuela and Ecuador. What is now Colombia and Panama emerged as the Republic of New Granada. The new nation experimented with federalism as the Granadine Confederation (1858), and then the United States of Colombia (1863), before the Republic of Colombia was finally declared in 1886.Panama seceded in 1903.

Cartagena de Indias vive este lunes una jornada histórica. Tras más de medio siglo de conflicto armado entre la guerrilla de las FARC y el Gobierno colombiano, la ciudad caribeña es testigo de la firma de la paz entre ambas partes. "Bienvenidos todos, siéntanse en su casa. Ustedes saben que Cartagena es nuestra joya, la 'ciudad heroica' que ya no solamente será heroica sino que será la 'ciudad de la paz'", ha señalado el presidente Juan Manuel Santos. Acostumbrada a ese agradable reposo caribeño que atrapó a Gabriel García Márquez, Cartagena recordará el 26 de septiembre de 2016 como un día atípico. Las calles tomadas por la seguridad (2.700 unidades de la Fuerza Pública, entre policía y ejército), el centro histórico repleto de líderes latinoamericanos y representantes de los organismos internacionales todos vestidos de blanco (el código de vestimenta de la paz), más de 1.000 periodistas de cualquier rincón del mundo y una sensación de perplejidad y curiosidad entre sus habitantes. La jornada ha comenzado con un acto a puerta cerrada del presidente colombiano con la cúpula militar y de la policía. "Esto que estamos firmando el día de hoy es su victoria, la victoria de nuestras Fuerzas. Ustedes realmente son los responsables de que estemos dando este paso en la historia de Colombia", ha declarado el mandatario, que a mediodía ha asistido a una ceremonia litúrgica en la Iglesia de San Pedro Claver, oficiada por el cardenal Pietro Parolín, secretario de estado del Vaticano. "Dios siempre estuvo presente. Yo le rezaba mucho a Dios para que me inspirara y guiara en muchas de las decisiones que había que tomar", ha dicho Santos. -

Discurso de Rodrigo Londoño Timoleón Jiménez, Alias Timochenko comandante de las FARC EP y de Juan Manuel Santos, Presidente del Gobierno de la República Nacional de Colombia en el acto histórico donde se firmaron los acuerdos de paz entre el gobierno y las FARC en Cartagena Colombia. El primero de los dos protagonistas de la firma en hablar fue “Timoleón Jiménez”, máximo líder de las Farc. Su discurso fue un extenso recorrido por la historia del grupo que nació en Marquetalia hace 52 años, y que desde ese entonces no dejó de estar enfrentado con el Estado. También hizo amplias referencias a artistas, políticos, guerrilleros y pensadores colombianos, que inspiraron su lucha armada que este 26 de septiembre quedó atrás. “Timochenko” destacó el paso de esa lucha con las armas a la lucha con ideas y argumentos al entrar oficialmente a la democracia nacional.
El cenit del discurso fue el momento que todo el país esperaba y por el que preguntaban los detractores del proceso. Ante los 2.500 invitados a la ceremonia y los millones de televidentes y radioescuchas que presenciaban el discurso del líder de las Farc, pidió perdón a las víctimas del conflicto armado por los actos del hasta hoy grupo alzado en armas. Fue quizá su discurso más político, en el que arremetió contra el sistema en general. Lanzó palabras contra la política tradicional, la publicidad, los medios de comunicación, el sistema de salud y los gastos de guerra.
El encargado del cierre, fue el presidente Santos, quien hizo toda la apuesta por la paz. En un discurso en el que evocó la violencia que azota hace 70 años al país desde la época del bipartidismo, le dio la bienvenida a la democracia al jefe de las Farc, alias Timochenko, y a los miembros de esa guerrilla.
Compartiendo la misma mesa con quien fue su enemigo durante décadas, Santos dijo: “Señor Rodrigo Londoño y miembros de las Farc: hoy, cuando emprenden su camino de regreso a la sociedad; cuando comienzan su tránsito a convertirse en un movimiento político, sin armas; siguiendo las reglas de justicia, verdad y reparación contenidas en el Acuerdo –como Jefe de Estado, de la patria que todos amamos– les doy la bienvenida a la democracia”.
El mandatario también invitó a los colombianos para que voten “Sí” en el plebiscito, con el que el próximo domingo se refrendará lo pactado con las Farc. “Con su voto, el próximo domingo 2 de octubre, podremos dejar atrás un pasado triste y abrirle las puertas a un futuro mejor, con alegría y optimismo”, agregó Santos.
Aunque el acuerdo fue cerrado hace un mes en La Habana, el acontecimiento es de tal magnitud que se le presentó al mundo por lo alto. Cerca de 2.500 invitados entre los que estaban 15 jefes de Estado, entre ellos el cubano Raúl Castro, anfitrión de las conversaciones auspiciadas también por Noruega, Venezuela y Chile; el jefe de la diplomacia estadounidense, John Kerry; el secretario general de la ONU, Ban Ki-moon; el rey emérito de España, Juan Carlos, y numerosos representantes de organismos internacionales.
También tuvieron un espacio especial las víctimas del conflicto, negociadores, congresistas, ministros y organizaciones promotoras de la paz y la reconciliación. Todos se dieron cita en Cartagena para anunciarle al mundo que el conflicto más antiguo de occidente es cosa del pasado. Ahora el camino es construir la reconciliación de los colombianos y cumplir con los puntos acordados: desarrollo agrario integral, participación política, solución al problema de drogas, garantías de reparación y no repetición a las víctimas y fin del conflicto.

Cartagena de Indias vive este lunes una jornada histórica. Tras más de medio siglo de conflicto armado entre la guerrilla de las FARC y el Gobierno colombiano, la ciudad caribeña es testigo de la firma de la paz entre ambas partes. "Bienvenidos todos, siéntanse en su casa. Ustedes saben que Cartagena es nuestra joya, la 'ciudad heroica' que ya no solamente será heroica sino que será la 'ciudad de la paz'", ha señalado el presidente Juan Manuel Santos.
Acostumbrada a ese agradable reposo caribeño que atrapó a Gabriel García Márquez, Cartagena recordará el 26 de septiembre de 2016 como un día atípico. Las calles tomadas por la seguridad (2.700 unidades de la Fuerza Pública, entre policía y ejército), el centro histórico repleto de líderes latinoamericanos y representantes de los organismos internacionales todos vestidos de blanco (el código de vestimenta de la paz), más de 1.000 periodistas de cualquier rincón del mundo y una sensación de perplejidad y curiosidad entre sus habitantes.
La jornada ha comenzado con un acto a puerta cerrada del presidente colombiano con la cúpula militar y de la policía. "Esto que estamos firmando el día de hoy es su victoria, la victoria de nuestras Fuerzas. Ustedes realmente son los responsables de que estemos dando este paso en la historia de Colombia", ha declarado el mandatario, que a mediodía ha asistido a una ceremonia litúrgica en la Iglesia de San Pedro Claver, oficiada por el cardenal Pietro Parolín, secretario de estado del Vaticano. "Dios siempre estuvo presente. Yo le rezaba mucho a Dios para que me inspirara y guiara en muchas de las decisiones que había que tomar", ha dicho Santos.

In September 2015 I spent two weeks in Cali, Colombia, on a Fulbright-sponsored project, visiting the Universidad del Valle (University of the Valley). Nicknamed Univalle, the university is named for the Cauca River Valley in the western part of the country. The purpose of my visit was to meet with students and professors in a research center in the School of Engineering that specializes in automation and machine intelligence, to look for opportunities for collaboration between Univalle and the University of Idaho, where I teach.
Cali is known for music and dancing, especially salsa. The city hosts two major music festivals every year: Mono Nuñez, which features Andean music, and Petronio Alvarez, focusing on Afro-Colombian music from the Pacific coast.
The director of the research center, “El Profe. Eduardo”, performs in a folk music group with other university faculty members, and I was privileged to attend a rehearsal at his house. Here’s a video. “El Profe”, is in the yellow shirt, and his wife is in the pink blouse. The percussionist teaches chemistry, and the lady with the guitar teaches music. The song is from Argentina.

In the Cauca mountains in Colombia, most of the population lives in rural communities that are affected by the conflict between the armed groups and the government forces which has plagued the area for the past 50 years. Despite a decrease in the amount of harassment, attacks and fighting, people continue to live in fear, pain and silence. Access to mental health services in the isolated villages of the mountains is non-existent. MSF psychologists do both individual and group therapy sessions in municipal hospitals and villages.

But this week, Colombia's government announced that it will phase out the U.S.-led program. For culture, intellectual Bogotá might lead the rest of Latin America in experimental theater, indie-rock, and just sheer volume of bookstores, but you could also get a completely alien education in an Amazonian malocca, or you could delve into the huge Latin music scene of salsa and cumbia, with the most exciting dance display being the enormous Carnival of Barranquilla.
For history, wander the narrow streets of South America's original capital in Bogotá, check out old Spanish colonial provincial retreats like Villa de Leyva, trek through the thick jungle-covered mountains of the northeast to the Lost City of the Tayrona Indians. Walk the walls of Cartagena's achingly beautiful old city, looking over the fortified ramparts upon which the colonial history of South America pivoted.
For nightlife, hot Cali is today's world capital of salsa, claiming that competitive distinction even over Colombia's other vibrant big city party scenes, which keep the music going long into the small hours of the morning.
For dining, you'll find everything from the ubiquitous cheap, delicious Colombian home-style meals to world-class upscale and modern culinary arts in the big cities, with cuisines from all corners of the world represented.
And for relaxing, there are gorgeous tropical beaches along Colombia's Caribbean and Pacific coasts, but you can find even more laidback and peaceful retreats on the idyllic and unspoilt Caribbean island of Providencia.
The political violence has subsided substantially throughout the majority of the country and savvy travelers have already flocked here from around the world—come before everyone else catches on!

Narcosub: 'Drug Submarine' seized in Colombia
A narcotics trafficking submarine has been discovered by authorities in Colombia. It's believed the vessel is able to travel from Colombia to the coasts of Mexico. The submarine was found in a river in the state of Cauca, about 400 kilometres southwest of the capital Bogota. Authorities found weapons nearby, but said no one was arrested and no drugs were found when they made the discovery. Colombia has overtaken Peru to be the world’s largest producer of cocaine, according to newly-released information likely to dismay President Juan Manuel Santos and his American allies. The UN's latest figures show that last year Colombia grew more coca than Peru and Bolivia combined. In 2014 Colombia had 69,000 hectares of coca; Peru had 42,900 and Bolivia 20,400. The UN estimates that cocaine production will rise 52 per cent in 2015, after the government halted aerial spraying of the crop, citing concerns that the herbicides used may cause cancer. Experts also believe that the surge in cocaine planting is due to farmers believing that a peace deal with Farc rebels, due to be signed by March, will see benefits for those who abandon their coca crops. In Colombia, the heirs to Pablo Escobar's drug empire are conducting business as usual — though with a somewhat lower profile. Today's Medellin drug cartels are highly structured and run much like multinational corporations. There are now one and a half million displaced persons in Colombia with no end to the war in sight. FARC already control 40% of the country and they’re gunning for more. “We've won our space...we're closer to the cities…logically, the course of the fight has to be in that direction," says a high ranking member of FARC’s command. In the next few weeks Bogota itself could come under attack. A former general predicts the day when Colombia will be split between a guerrilla controlled South and an army held North.

Colombia has overtaken Peru to be the world’s largest producer of cocaine, according to newly-released information likely to dismay President Juan Manuel Santos and his American allies.
The UN's latest figures show that last year Colombia grew more coca than Peru and Bolivia combined. In 2014 Colombia had 69,000 hectares of coca; Peru had 42,900 and Bolivia 20,400.
The UN estimates that cocaine production will rise 52 per cent in 2015, after the government halted aerial spraying of the crop, citing concerns that the herbicides used may cause cancer. Experts also believe that the surge in cocaine planting is due to farmers believing that a peace deal with Farc rebels, due to be signed by March, will see benefits for those who abandon their coca crops. Jorgan Andrews, director of the narcotics section at the American embassy in Bogota, told The Washington Post that the belief was that those who had the most crop would be compensated the most.
“The government programs will be in areas where there is coca, so one interpretation is that those who grow the most coca will get the most government benefits,” he said.
“And if the peace process with Farc falls apart, they’ll already have more coca in the ground.”
As many as one million of Colombia’s 50 million citizens are linked to the coca business directly or indirectly, according to Eduardo Diaz, the economist and former health minister in charge of the crop substitution programme.
The government wants entire communities to opt for crop substitution in the hope it will bring state-building investments in infrastructure, health and education. Paying people to stop growing coca does not work, Mr Diaz said, because it encourages them to grow the crop in the first place.
And officials in the US are concerned that the surge in production could see a spike in cocaine use in North America, following years of decline.
At the weekend Colombian police seized 575kg (1,265 pounds) of cocaine bound for Chile on two buses carrying Colombia fans to a World Cup qualifying soccer match in Santiago.
Mr Santos has been trumpeting his successes in securing a peace deal with Farc rebels – Marxist guerrillas who are waging one of the world’s longest-running civil wars, and who have financed their battle through drug deals. Farc have said they will abandon trafficking drugs once the deal is finalised.
Mr Santos is calling on the US, which has already heavily invested in reducing cocaine production in Colombia, to help finance further crop substitution projects.

Colombia has overtaken Peru to be the world’s largest producer of cocaine, according to newly-released information likely to dismay President Juan Manuel Santos and his American allies.
The UN's latest figures show that last year Colombia grew more coca than Peru and Bolivia combined. In 2014 Colombia had 69,000 hectares of coca; Peru had 42,900 and Bolivia 20,400.
The UN estimates that cocaine production will rise 52 per cent in 2015, after the government halted aerial spraying of the crop, citing concerns that the herbicides used may cause cancer. Experts also believe that the surge in cocaine planting is due to farmers believing that a peace deal with Farc rebels, due to be signed by March, will see benefits for those who abandon their coca crops. Jorgan Andrews, director of the narcotics section at the American embassy in Bogota, told The Washington Post that the belief was that those who had the most crop would be compensated the most.
“The government programs will be in areas where there is coca, so one interpretation is that those who grow the most coca will get the most government benefits,” he said.
“And if the peace process with Farc falls apart, they’ll already have more coca in the ground.”
As many as one million of Colombia’s 50 million citizens are linked to the coca business directly or indirectly, according to Eduardo Diaz, the economist and former health minister in charge of the crop substitution programme.
The government wants entire communities to opt for crop substitution in the hope it will bring state-building investments in infrastructure, health and education. Paying people to stop growing coca does not work, Mr Diaz said, because it encourages them to grow the crop in the first place.
And officials in the US are concerned that the surge in production could see a spike in cocaine use in North America, following years of decline.
At the weekend Colombian police seized 575kg (1,265 pounds) of cocaine bound for Chile on two buses carrying Colombia fans to a World Cup qualifying soccer match in Santiago.
Mr Santos has been trumpeting his successes in securing a peace deal with Farc rebels – Marxist guerrillas who are waging one of the world’s longest-running civil wars, and who have financed their battle through drug deals. Farc have said they will abandon trafficking drugs once the deal is finalised.
Mr Santos is calling on the US, which has already heavily invested in reducing cocaine production in Colombia, to help finance further crop substitution projects.

The Medellín Cartel was an organized network of drug suppliers and smugglers originating in the city of Medellín, Colombia. The drug cartel operated in Bolivia, Colombia, Honduras, Peru, the United States, as well as Canada and Europe throughout the 1970s and 1980s. It was founded and run by Ochoa Vázquez brothers Jorge Luis, Juan David, and Fabio, together with Pablo Escobar and José Gonzalo Rodríguez Gacha. By 1993, the highly effective resistance group, Los Pepes (or PEPES), controlled by the Cali Cartel, and the Colombian government, in collaboration with the Cali Cartel, right-wing paramilitary groups, and the United States government, had successfully dismantled the Medellín Cartel by imprisoning or assassinating its members.
At the height of its operations, the Medellín Cartel smuggled tons of cocaine each week into countries all over the world and brought in at least $420,000,000 per week.[1] For a time, the Medellín Cartel supplied at least 84%-90% of the United States and 80% of the global cocaine market.
