A variety show, also known as variety arts or variety entertainment, is entertainment made up of a variety of acts (hence the name), especially musical performances and sketch comedy, and is normally introduced by a compère (master of ceremonies) or host. Other types of acts include magic, animal and circus acts, acrobatics, juggling and ventriloquism. The variety format made its way from Victorian era stage to radio to television. Variety shows were a staple of anglophone television from its early days (late 1940s) into the 1980s.
While still widespread in some parts of the world, the proliferation of multichannel television and evolving viewer tastes affected the popularity of variety shows in the United States. Despite this, their influence has still had a major effect on late night television—where late night talk shows and NBC's comedy series Saturday Night Live (which originally premiered in 1975) have remained popular fixtures of North American television.
The format is basically that of music hall in the United Kingdom or vaudeville in the United States. Variety in the UK evolved in theatres and music halls, and later in Working Men's Clubs. Most of the early top performers on British television and radio did an apprenticeship either in stage variety, or during World War II in Entertainments National Service Association (ENSA). In the UK, the ultimate accolade for a variety artist for decades was to be asked to do the annual Royal Command Performance at the London Palladium theatre, in front of the monarch.
Bucker Fuskyote trolls everyone, twice in his epic rendition of "Friday" by Rebecca Black and "Never going to Give you Up" by Rick Astley. Stahi, the stage ninja participates by dying twice. Hilarious performance my friend!
Here I am, singing to my friend Howlie Tigerpaw at MFF 2008 in the variety show. As the MC explains at the end, I am indeed singing live into the mic in suit (you can hear where I accidentally bump the microphone on my nose). I had a blast doing it and I'm glad that I had the opportunity to perform. This video was shot by novazax on youtube. Check him out! His videos are awesome!
My man Bucker performed a very nice rendition of the "Friday" song (and another special surprise) while singing and playing the ukelele in fursuit! Most impressive, and I always look forward to what he will come up with next!
My man Bucker entertained a capacity crowd on Saturday night at RF 2011, playing the banjo and guitar along with the drum accompaniment of the one and only Alexander James Adams. I'm always looking forward to what he will perform at the next con's variety show!
This is my performance from Furry Night Live 2010 (FNL 2010) at Further Confusion 2010 (FC 2010). I decided to rewrite the lyrics to He Taught Me How To Yodel and actually try to yodel in the show. Since it's me, everything was done live in fursuit. I made the instrumental track from a few different sources by adjusting the pitch and speed of various clips before splicing them together, a feat I'm rather proud of. My backup dancers, Drex and Se'kar, did a great job! Much thanks to Char for the video: http://www.youtube.com/user/PsycoEwok
My man Bucker Fuskyote always pulls off something new and ingenious every variety show or masquerade he's in... and Rainfurrest was no exception as he introduced us to the electric bagpipe. Quite a unique sound, especially when accompanied by Shade Koba on the guitar!
I sang "Zombie Jamboree" live with alternate lyrics in the variety show at Rainfurrest 2009. I had a lot of fun coming up with the words, singing the song, and choreographing the dance. The dancers were awesome and learned the dance on the day of the performance. As always, singing in suit is one of the most fun experiences for me and I'm so happy that I could share that with everyone. Dancers (l to r): Drex, Furball, Se'kar, Fuzzy, Tibolf
Performing at FC: Unleashed, during Further Confusion 2011.
Here I am, performing a medley of Somewhere Over the Rainbow and I'm Yours by Jason Mraz on the ukulele in fursuit. This was recorded by Kernedahusky at FWA's Furs Got Talent in 2010. Thanks so much for the video. I always have a lot of fun doing these!
