The Clydebank Blitz refers to two devastating Luftwaffe air raids on the shipbuilding town of Clydebank in Scotland which took place in March 1941.
As a result of the raids on the nights of 13 and 14 March 1941, the town was largely destroyed and it suffered the worst destruction and civilian loss of life in all of Scotland. 528 people died, 617 people were seriously injured, and hundreds more were injured by blast debris. Out of approximately 12,000 houses, only seven remained undamaged — with 4,000 completely destroyed and 4,500 severely damaged. Over 35,000 people were made homeless.
Clydebank's production of ships and munitions for the Allies made it a target (similar to the Barrow Blitz). Major targets included the John Brown & Company shipyard, ROF Dalmuir and the Singer Corporation factory. A total of 439 bombers dropped over 1,000 bombs. RAF fighters managed to shoot down two aircraft during the raid, but none were brought down by anti-aircraft fire.
In his book Luftwaffe over Scotland: a history of German air attacks on Scotland, 1939-45, amateur historian Les Taylor qualified the Clydebank Blitz as "the most cataclysmic event" in war-time Scotland. He claims that while the raid on 13 March was not intended as a terror attack, it caused extensive damage because there was a lot of housing near the specific targets. But the bombing the following night was indeed a terror attack as it "was intended to crack morale and force the people to call for an end to the war. However, it had quite the opposite effect, strengthening resolve for the war in Scotland."

Clydebank is a town in West Dunbartonshire, Scotland. Situated on the north bank of the River Clyde, Clydebank borders Dumbarton and the villages of Old Kilpatrick, Bowling and Milton to the west, as well as the town of Milngavie in East Dunbartonshire, and the Yoker and Drumchapel districts of the adjacent City of Glasgow. Clydebank is part of the registration County of Dumbarton, the Dunbartonshire Crown Lieutenancy area, and the wider urban area of Greater Glasgow. Clydebank was founded as a police burgh on 18 November 1886.
Clydebank (Scottish Gaelic: Bruach Chluaidh) is located within the historical boundaries of the ancient Kingdom of Strathclyde, the Mormaerdom of Lennox, and the parish of Old Kilpatrick (12th century), on the north bank of the River Clyde. A long-standing local legend is that the village of Old Kilpatrick derived its name from being the birthplace of Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. There do not appear to be any historical sources which support this, however.

The following events occurred in March 1941:
Part one of the documentary about Scotland's worst civilan disaster. The intense bombing inflicted upon the people of Clydebank by the German lutwaffe over the nights of 13th & 14th March 1941. The goverment of that time censored the full details of what actually happened on those fateful nights. A total of 528 people died, more than a thousand were injured and only seven of the town's 12,000 homes remained untouched by the bombs.
Part two of the documentary about the Clydebank Blitz. What the luftwaffe failed to do on those fateful nights 70 years ago some eejit succeeded. The temements at the end of this clip were demolished just recently. My family, including a very young Maggie lived in those very temements in Dalmuir, firstly Kitchener Street and then Dumbarton Road. I have fond memories of Christmas Day and taking my first doll's pram out onto Dumbarton Road even though there was at least two foot of snow on the pavement outside our tenement.

Written by Ian Davidson, who I met many years ago at the Star folk club in Glasgow, trhis song is based on memories and stories of the Blitz, and Ian very kindly allowed me to use it, I think one of teh strongest Anti war songs around, and should be better known.

However, during World War II, it tragically became the worst-blitzed town in all of Scotland. It has also borne actors (for example, James Cosmo), artists, athletes, entrepreneurs (Duncan Bannatyne OBE), film-makers, and musicians (Wet Wet Wet). The areas seen on this plan (map) from pre-Blitz Clydebank are Mountblow, Dalmuir, Parkhall, Duntocher, Hardgate, Kilbowie, Drumry, Linnvale, Whitecrook and Yoker. Like other schemes, Faifley did not yet exist.
The first episode in the series focuses on the outbreak of the Blitz in September 1940. The first bombs used against Blitz Street, a row of terraced houses specially built on a remote military base and subjected to a frightening range of large-scale bombs and incendiaries similar to those dropped by the Luftwaffe - are the SC50 (25kg of TNT), the most common bomb dropped on the first day of bombing in London, and the SC500 bombs, which contained 250kg of TNT. The programme features emotional eye witness testimonies, giving a fantastic insight into day-to-day life on the home front and the immense psychological damage caused by the bombardment. The Blitz (shortened from German 'Blitzkrieg', "lightning war") was the period of sustained strategic bombing of the United Kingdom by Nazi Germany during the Second World War. Between 7 September 1940 and 21 May 1941 there were major aerial raids (attacks in which more than 100 tonnes of high explosives were dropped) on 16 British cities. Over a period of 267 days (almost 37 weeks), London was attacked 71 times, Birmingham, Liverpool and Plymouth eight times, Bristol six, Glasgow five, Southampton four, Portsmouth and Hull three, and there was also at least one large raid on another eight cities. This was a result of a rapid escalation starting on 24 August 1940, when night bombers aiming for RAF airfields drifted off course and accidentally destroyed several London homes, killing civilia...

Britain Through A Lens: The Documentary Film Mob The unlikely story of how, between 1929 and 1945, a group of tweed-wearing radicals and pin-striped bureaucrats created the most influential movement in the history of British film. They were the British Documentary Movement and they gave Britons a taste for watching films about real life. They were an odd bunch, as one wit among them later admitted. "A documentary director must be a gentleman... and a socialist." They were inspired by a big idea - that films about real life would change the world. That, if people of all backgrounds saw each other on screen - as they really were - they would get to know and respect each other more. As John Grierson, the former street preacher who founded the Movement said: "Documentary outlines the patterns ...

After much delay, I have finally gotten around to finishing off my minecraft map, "The Wildlands." http://www.mediafire.com/download/4cvkfxgncth430u/Wildlands+V5.rar The map centers around isolation, story, and a haunting and mysterious athmosphere. Taking place on a desolate isle off the coast of Scotland, you find yourself stranded after a fierce storm. As you search for a way to escape the island, you can take the time to soak in the backstory and explore the expansive surroundings. It's not a very challenging map, although it is suggested to play in easy difficulty or higher, that is mostly to add to the story of the map, which takes center stage. Signs are in almost every building, but try and pretend that they're old journals and diaries or something, I could of used some sort of...
The QE2 came in to Greenock on the River Clyde on 20th September 2007 to commemorate her launch in that river in the City of Glasgow. This video is a tribute to her, a most beautiful ship. As a 13 year old boy I hung around the yard on the day people (with tickets)were invited on board for a tour. My friend and I were disappointed as we didn't have tickets. A kindly yard-worker-looking guy came over and gave us free tickets. Since then, I have always been interested in her life. I have seen her entering port in many places including Sydney, Singapore, Hong Kong and New York. To see her in my hometown on her anniversary was quite special!!

'Bad Boys Of The Blitz' highlights the rise of the criminal underworld in wartime Britain and the rich pickings to be had once Nazi bombers had done their worst. Mobster Frankie Fraser talks about the redistribution of wealth but leaves a bad taste in the mouth when he says: "The war was a criminal's paradise. The most exciting and profitable time ever. It broke my heart when Hitler surrendered." I think that a few minutes of this documentary are missing as it failed to record correctly. Sorry.
