The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement is an international humanitarian movement with approximately 97 million volunteers, members and staff worldwide which was founded to protect human life and health, to ensure respect for all human beings, and to prevent and alleviate human suffering.
The movement consists of several distinct organizations that are legally independent from each other, but are united within the movement through common basic principles, objectives, symbols, statutes and governing organisations. The movement's parts are:
Indonesian Red Cross Society (Indonesian: Palang Merah Indonesia) is a humanitarian organization in Indonesia. It is a member of International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.
Indonesia is the one of the very few Muslim-majority countries to use the Red Cross as its symbol. Because Indonesia is neither a strictly faith-based nor secular nation, it has chosen to use the Red Cross as its symbol.
In mid-2013, Indonesia Red Cross Society has 32,568 people join in Volunteer Corps, 19,294 join in Individual Volunteers and 893,381 Blood Donor Volunteers or totally 945,243 persons and is recorded as the most number volunteers in the world.
The IRCS was created on 17 September 1945, exactly 1 month after Indonesia's independence. President Soekarno ordered its inception when a battle between Indonesian soldiers and allied troops broke out, leaving many wounded, on 3 September 1945. Based on the performance, IRCS received an international recognition in 1950 that it was accepted as a member of the International Red Cross and achieved its legal status through Presidential Decree Number 25 Year 1959, which was later reinforced by Presidential Decree Number 245 Year 1963.
A society is a group of people involved in persistent social interaction, or a large social grouping sharing the same geographical or social territory, typically subject to the same political authority and dominant cultural expectations. Societies are characterized by patterns of relationships (social relations) between individuals who share a distinctive culture and institutions; a given society may be described as the sum total of such relationships among its constituent members. In the social sciences, a larger society often evinces stratification or dominance patterns in subgroups.
Insofar as it is collaborative, a society can enable its members to benefit in ways that would not otherwise be possible on an individual basis; both individual and social (common) benefits can thus be distinguished, or in many cases found to overlap.
A society can also consist of like-minded people governed by their own norms and values within a dominant, larger society. This is sometimes referred to as a subculture, a term used extensively within criminology.
A cross is a geometrical figure consisting of two lines or bars perpendicular to each other, dividing one or two of the lines in half. The lines usually run vertically and horizontally; if they run obliquely, the design is technically termed a saltire, although the arms of a saltire need not meet at right angles.
The cross is one of the most ancient human symbols, and has been used by many religions, most notably Christianity. It may be seen as a division of the world into four elements (Chevalier, 1997) or cardinal points, or alternately as the union of the concepts of divinity, the vertical line, and the world, the horizontal line (Koch, 1955).
The word cross comes ultimately from Latin crux, a Roman torture device used for crucifixion, via Old Irish cros. The word was introduced to English in the 10th century as the term for the instrument of the torturous execution of Jesus as described in the New Testament, gradually replacing the earlier word rood. Crux is possibly derived from Phoenician. According to the Catholic Encyclopedia cross does not come from crux but form the Latin curio, "to torment".
PMI may stand for:
Emergency response undertaken by the Indonesian Red Cross in Wasior, Mount Merapi and the Mentawai Islands in 2010-2011.
Activities, services and assistance to communities in need of PMI during the year 2008.
When international disasters strike, global Red Cross teams are often the first to the scene, providing relief supplies such as food, water, tarps, hygiene kits and medical care to people in need. But even long after a disaster—when the news cameras disappear and headlines fade—the Red Cross remains in communities to help families rebuild, recover, and prepare for future emergencies. The American Red Cross deployed to Indonesia nearly ten years ago to provide lifesaving support to families impacted by an earthquake and tsunami. Today, the American Red Cross remains in the country, carrying out disaster preparedness work and helping families stay safe, healthy, and resilient.

During disaster. the need of clean water for drinking, bathing and washing are increasingly important. Normal supply of clean water is almost certainly interrupted or even disappears. Under these circumstances, the survivors are forced to seek the scarcely available water sources, which are not always safe for consumption. The PMI emergency water and sanitation programme started when the tsunami in 2004 hit Aceh and some other areas in the Indian Ocean. At that time, the partner National Societies such as Spanish Red Cross, French Red Cross and the German Red Cross contributed efforts to fulfill the needs of clean water for displaced people by using a variety of water treatment equipments at their disposal.

Crumbling myths In their awareness campaign, the Norwegian Red Cross lets refugees and migrants themselves play the main part. By being exposed to this campaign, we hope that inhumane myths will crumble in the meeting with humane faces and voices. And of course encourage people to take a stand, and raise their voice to outbalance the impression of xenophobia. In this film young people are trying to read out Norwegian words. The young migrants are seemingly oblivious to the fact that the words used in the learning process are harsh comments from immigrant-hostile Norwegian Facebook-pages, thus creating a very strong and emotional contrast for the viewers. Language is the most basic and fundamental key to integration in any society. Encouraging viewers to talk with migrants and not ju...
On 4 and 5 November 2015, more than 70 people from different Lebanese regions gathered in Beirut to discuss challenges facing local communities and debate solutions to them. Mayors, university professors and schoolteachers, agricultural cooperatives, social activists, members of municipality unions, Lebanese Red Cross volunteers and citizens who benefitted from the Red Cross’ assistance, all put their differences aside and came together to discuss social, economic and humanitarian concerns on the Lebanese scene, guided by the seven Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.

The Red Cross Red Crescent Movement is helping thousands to rebuild their homes from the ashes and to help them protect their dignity.

We first met Leen at a Red Cross shelter in a refugee camp on the border of FYR Macedonia and Greece last November. She had fled Syria with her younger sister and mother, and was travelling to Germany to be reunited with her father. She was exhausted and shaken from her journey but relieved to have reached temporary safety at the Gevgelija refugee transit camp. Months later we heard from her, she had finally arrived in Germany. redcross.org.uk/refugeecrisis

An hour ago at the checkpoint "Donetsk-Izvarino" began customs procedures and documentation for the cargo of humanitarian aid. The first 16 Trucks went to the border crossing area. So may our emblem be proudly unfurled, To link the chain of youth for service through the world Oh give us strength to prove, Sure and sublime, To make the cause we serve, Shine over the hills of time.

Half of the 13 million Red Cross Red Crescent volunteers worldwide are young people. The Red Cross Red Crescent recognizes the important value they bring to our communities, by leading positive change on a daily basis. "Young people have a critical role in helping the Red Cross Red Crescent reach the most vulnerable. They also have an important role to play in building healthy communities," explained Ashatna Osborne, Chair of the Youth Commission for the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC).
Kathmandu, Nepal The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies – the IFRC - operates in 190 countries around the world. In many of its humanitarian operations, it utilises four-wheel drive vehicles, primarily the 4 x 4 vehicles, to bring Disaster Response assistance to those in need. The drivers of these vehicles hold very responsible positions. Apart from ensuring the care of expensive equipment, that is the vehicles themselves, drivers are also responsible for the safety of passengers and of other road users. They are also often the first Nepal Red Cross Society and IFRC representatives to receive and welcome guests and as such, playing a key role in making a positive and lasting first impression. The 4 x 4 vehicles help us do our job. The life of a driver and ...

Help me, please help me, I'm a victim of disaster
My life has just been ripped apart in seconds only faster
I lost all hope I lost myself I lost my family too
So if there's a search and rescue will they find me soon
Burnin I'm burnin I just can't get out
Will someone please tell me what this is all about
I gave my time I gave my money, gave almost everything
So why do bad things happen to good people like me
Red cross will you save me (4x)
Dreamin I'm dreamin will someone wake me up
This nightmare can't be real and I ain't givin up
I need some help, I need some faith
I need the cold hard truth
So if I'm here tomorrow will I be covered too
Learnin' I'm learnin' just who is there for me
He came and died and bled forever I am free
He covered me, he saved me and washed away my sins
