Veterinary medicine is the branch of medicine that deals with the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease, disorder and injury in non-human animals. The scope of veterinary medicine is wide, covering all animal species, both domesticated and wild, with a wide range of conditions which can affect different species.
Veterinary medicine is widely practiced, both with and without professional supervision. Professional care is most often led by a veterinary physician (also known as a vet, veterinary surgeon or veterinarian), but also by paraveterinary workers such as veterinary nurses or technicians. This can be augmented by other paraprofessionals with specific specialisms such as animal physiotherapy or dentistry, and species relevant roles such as farriers.
Veterinary science helps human health through the monitoring and control of zoonotic disease (infectious disease transmitted from non-human animals to humans), food safety, and indirectly through human applications from basic medical research. They also help to maintain food supply through livestock health monitoring and treatment, and mental health by keeping pets healthy and long living. Veterinary scientists often collaborate with epidemiologists, and other health or natural scientists depending on type of work. Ethically, veterinarians are usually obliged to look after animal welfare.

Career in veterinary science by http://www.indiancolleges.com Normally when one says vet, the picture that crystallizes in one's mind is of a doctor in a clinic looking after sick dogs brought to him by their worried masters. However, this is a very narrow view of this profession. There are various career paths that one can follow. It is when you are a vet at a private clinic, and then you take care and cure the pets that are brought in by people. This is basically when you are dealing small animals. When you specialize in larger animals, you could be called to farms where the horse or the cow has fallen sick and needs to be treated.

For most of the eighteenth century, western European nations witnessed a succession of devastating “cattle plagues” that destroyed countless animals and threatened food supplies and the very foundations of the agrarian economy. The most obvious and enduring result of these plagues was the elevation of veterinary medicine from an art practiced by farriers and other tradesmen to a science that by century's end was becoming an accepted part of university medical curricula. The story of how veterinary medicine became a science in this period is not, however, a straightforward one. Aristocratic patrons, military officers, bourgeois agrarian reformers, and university medical faculty all had competing visions for the new science. Nowhere was this more evident than at the University of Padua whe...

June 2014. I visited the University of Veterinary Science in Yezin, Myanmar, the only institution producing veterinary graduates. Around 100 graduates are produced per year. The course is 5 years. Beautiful dam and countryside especially during sunset. Road building is seen. But I had no chance to stay another night as my host rushed me off back to Yangon after the lectures to the final year undergraduates.
