Yorkshire (/ˈjɔːrkʃər/ or /ˈjɔːrkʃɪər/) is a historic county of Northern England and the largest in the United Kingdom. Due to its great size in comparison to other English counties, functions have been undertaken over time by its subdivisions, which have also been subject to periodic reform. Throughout these changes, Yorkshire has continued to be recognised as a geographical territory and cultural region. The name is familiar and well understood across the United Kingdom and is in common use in the media and the military, and also features in the titles of current areas of civil administration such as North Yorkshire, South Yorkshire, West Yorkshire and East Riding of Yorkshire.
Within the borders of the historic county of Yorkshire are areas which are widely considered to be among the greenest in England, due to the vast stretches of unspoiled countryside in the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors and to the open aspect of some of the major cities. Yorkshire has sometimes been nicknamed "God's Own County" or "God's Own Country".
North Yorkshire is a non-metropolitan or shire and ceremonial county in England. It is located primarily in the region of Yorkshire and the Humber but partly in the region of North East England.
Created by the Local Government Act 1972, it covers an area of 8,654 square kilometres (3,341 sq mi), making it the largest county in England. The majority of the Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors lie within North Yorkshire's boundaries, and around 40% of the county is covered by National Parks. The largest settlements are York (153,717), Middlesbrough (138,400), Harrogate (73,576) and Scarborough (61,749); the county town, Northallerton, has a population of 16,832.
The area under the control of the county council, or shire county, is divided into a number of local government districts: Craven, Hambleton, Harrogate, Richmondshire, Ryedale, Scarborough and Selby.
The Department for Communities and Local Government considered reorganising North Yorkshire County Council's administrative structure by abolishing the seven district councils and the county council to create a North Yorkshire unitary authority. The changes were planned to be implemented no later than 1 April 2009. This was rejected on 25 July 2007 so the County Council and District Council structure will remain.

The intrepid archaeological treasure hunters, led by Tony Robinson, head for Malton in North Yorkshire where a swathe of nettle-infested jungle conceals 2,000 years of English history including a Roman fort. The land is about to be turned into a park and the Time Team have been asked to uncover the area's other secrets, specifically a medieval castle and a Jacobean or possibly Tudor manor house. Scarborough has been popular since the Iron Age - when the first fortification was built on the headland that divides the North and South Bays. The Romans also chose the headland for a military base and it was last attacked during WWI by the Germans who shelled the town in WWI. Its long history includes monasteries and the discovery of spa water, that brought the first 'tourists' for water cures: making it the first place in Britain to have bathing machines! With the arrival of the railway in the 1840s its place was assured as a holiday resort - a claim it still has today. Geoff Druett covers the town from the port to the castle, from South Bay to North Bay - showing how much more there is to Scarborough than the beach! A great very muddy NORT 4x4 weekend in North Yorkshire Fair bit of damage as per normal
The main part of my holiday to Yorkshire was to visit one of my favorite heritage lines, the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, running 18 miles from Pickering through the moors to Grosmont and continues for another 6 miles towards the coast for Whitby. Sadly however this visit was at a time the railway was suffering with a steam locomotive shortage as 6 engines in the running fleet were out for repairs, so some diesel traction had to be used to keep the trains running with some minor timetable alterations on Thursdays. No matter as the visit was still a very enjoyable one with plenty to see and do along the railway. Locomotives in action during my visit - |BR 4-6-0 4MT Class no 75029 'The Green Knight' |BR 2-6-0 4MT Class no 76079 |BR Class 37 37264 |BR Class 25 D7628 'Sybilla' I visite...
