Vienna is moving together
Like other modern cities, Vienna aims to ensure that everyone gets from A to B safely – regardless of their how much they earn, where they live, or what their needs are. Over 5 million trips are made in Vienna every day: on foot, by bike, by public transport, or by car. Vienna will continue to grow in the coming years, and everyone wants to stay mobile. If our current mobility patterns continue, we’ll see a 12% increase in car traffic by 2025, which would mean more noise, more air pollution, and more traffic congestion. Vienna is looking ahead with its new Urban Mobility Concept. By 2025, eco-friendly means of transport are to account for 80% of all trips made in Vienna, so the city can maintain its high quality of life. Future urban mobility will seamlessly integrate different transport modes and promote car- and bike-sharing. This is for everyone’s benefit: owning a car in a city is twenty times more expensive than buying an annual pass for the Vienna public transport network. More than a third of the city’s population are already annual pass holders. Cycling and walking are good for your health: just 30 minutes per day increases your life expectancy by several years. Two thirds of Vienna’s road space is currently reserved for cars, which are parked 95% of the time. Fewer cars means more space for walking, playing and meeting other people. It also frees up road space for deliveries and other trips that must be made by car. Vienna is expanding its public transport network, making cycling and walking even more attractive, and facilitating car- and bike-share systems. In the future, urban mobility will bring us all together, saving time and money, keeping us healthy and making the city more attractive for everyone.

It is clear that we will never eradicate poverty or achieve sustainable development goals so long as disasters continue to set back progress. But it doesn't have to be this way. While weak development choices expose people to disasters, good, risk-informed development makes people and communities more resilient. In this animated video, UNDP explains it's approach to disaster risk reduction and stresses that 'if it isn't risk-informed, it isn't sustainable development'.

Stefan Zanetti has started several start-ups as spin-offs from projects at ETH Zurich. With the creation of synesix, careware and qipp, he has combined his enthusiasm for solutions in the fields of customer interaction design, risk and sustainability management with his passion for new technologies. His youngest venture, the multiple- awarded software company qipp [“kwipp”], follows a disruptive Internet of Things approach by applying social networking technologies to things.

Urban planning
Urban planning is a technical and political process concerned with the use of land, protection and use of the environment, public welfare, and the design of the urban environment, including air, water, and the infrastructure passing into and out of urban areas such as transportation, communications, and distribution networks. Urban Planning is also referred to as urban and regional, regional, town, city, rural planning or some combination in various areas worldwide. Urban planning takes many forms and it can share perspectives and practices with urban design.
Urban planning guides and ensures the orderly development of settlements and satellite communities which commute into and out of urban areas or share resources with it. Urban planners in the field are concerned with research and analysis, strategic thinking, architecture, urban design, public consultation, policy recommendations, implementation and management.
Urban Planners work with the cognate fields of Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Civil Engineering, and Public Administration to achieve strategic, policy and sustainability goals. Early urban planners were often members of these cognate fields. Today urban planning is a separate, independent professional discipline. The discipline is the broader category that includes many different sub-fields such as land-use planning, zoning, environmental planning, transportation planning, and Parks and Recreation.

Vienna is moving together
Like other modern cities, Vienna aims to ensure that everyone gets from A to B safely – regardless of their how much they earn, where they live, or what their needs are. Over 5 million trips are made in Vienna every day: on foot, by bike, by public transport, or by car. Vienna will continue to grow in the coming years, and everyone wants to stay mobile. If our current mobility patterns continue, we’ll see a 12% increase in car traffic by 2025, which would mean more noise, more air pollution, and more traffic congestion. Vienna is looking ahead with its new Urban Mobility Concept. By 2025, eco-friendly means of transport are to account for 80% of all trips made in Vienna, so the city can maintain its high quality of life. Future urban mobility will seamlessly integrate different transport modes and promote car- and bike-sharing. This is for everyone’s benefit: owning a car in a city is twenty times more expensive than buying an annual pass for the Vienna public transport network. More than a third of the city’s population are already annual pass holders. Cycling and walking are good for your health: just 30 minutes per day increases your life expectancy by several years. Two thirds of Vienna’s road space is currently reserved for cars, which are parked 95% of the time. Fewer cars means more space for walking, playing and meeting other people. It also frees up road space for deliveries and other trips that must be made by car. Vienna is expanding its public transport network, making cycling and walking even more attractive, and facilitating car- and bike-share systems. In the future, urban mobility will bring us all together, saving time and money, keeping us healthy and making the city more attractive for everyone.

In the last 20 odd years, we've seen over 1.3 million people killed and more than 4 billion affected by disasters that have cost at least US$2 trillion. It is clear that we will never eradicate poverty or achieve sustainable development goals so long as disasters continue to set back progress. But it doesn't have to be this way. While weak development choices expose people to disasters, good, risk-informed development makes people and communities more resilient. In this animated video, UNDP explains it's approach to disaster risk reduction and stresses that 'if it isn't risk-informed, it isn't sustainable development'.

This study argues that businesswomen were central to urban society and to the operation and development of commerce in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. It presents a rich and complicated picture of lower-middling life and female enterprise in three northern English towns: Manchester, Leeds, and Sheffield. The stories told by a wide range of sources including trade directories, newspaper advertisements, court records, correspondence, and diaries demonstrate the very differing fortunes and levels of independence that individual businesswomen enjoyed. Yet, as a group, their involvement in the economic life of towns and, in particular, the manner in which they exploited and facitilitated commercial development, force us to reassess our understanding of both gender relations and urban culture in late Georgian England. In contrast to the traditional historical consensus that the independent woman of business during this period particularly those engaged in occupations deemed 'unfeminine' was insignificant and no more than an oddity, businesswomen are presented here not as footnotes to the main narrative, but as central characters in a story of unprecedented social and economic transformation.the book reveals a complex picture of female participation in business. It shows that factors traditionally thought to discriminate against women's commercial activity particularly property laws and ideas about gender and respectability did have significant impacts upon female enterprise. Yet it is also evident that women were not automatically economically or socially marginalized as a result. The woman of business might be subject to various constraints, but at the same time, she could be blessed with a number of freedoms, and a degree of independence that set her apart from most other women and many men in late Georgian society.

In contrast to the traditional historical consensus that the independent woman of business during this period particularly those engaged in occupations deemed 'unfeminine' was insignificant and no more than an oddity, businesswomen are presented here not as footnotes to the main narrative, but as central characters in a story of unprecedented social and economic transformation.the book reveals a complex picture of female participation in business. It shows that factors traditionally thought to discriminate against women's commercial activity particularly property laws and ideas about gender and respectability did have significant impacts upon female enterprise. Yet it is also evident that women were not automatically economically or socially marginalized as a result. The woman of business might be subject to various constraints, but at the same time, she could be blessed with a number of freedoms, and a degree of independence that set her apart from most other women and many men in late Georgian society.

Denounced as parasitical under Chairman Mao and devalued by the norms of traditional Chinese ethics, the city now functions as a site of individual and collective identity in China. Cities envelop the countryside, not only geographically and demographically but also in terms of cultural impact. Robin Visser illuminates the cultural dynamics of three decades of radical urban development in China. Interpreting fiction, cinema, visual art, architecture, and urban design, she analyzes how the aesthetics of the urban environment have shaped the emotions and behavior of people and cultures, and how individual and collective images of and practices in the city have produced urban aesthetics. By relating the built environment to culture, Visser situates postsocialist Chinese urban aesthetics within local and global economic and intellectual trends.in the 1980s, writers, filmmakers, and artists began to probe the contradictions in Chinas urbanization policies and rhetoric. Powerful neorealist fiction, cinema, documentaries, paintings, photographs, performances, and installations contrasted forms of glittering urban renewal with the governments inattention to a livable urban infrastructure. Narratives and images depicting the melancholy urban subject came to illustrate ethical quandaries raised by urban life. Visser relates her analysis of this art to major transformations in urban planning under global neoliberalism, to the development of cultural studies in the Chinese academy, and to ways that specific cities, particularly Beijing and Shanghai, figure in the cultural imagination. Despite the environmental and cultural destruction caused by Chinas neoliberal policies, Visser argues for the emergence of a new urban self-awareness, one that offers creative resolutions for the dilemmas of urbanism through new forms of intellectual engagement in society and nascent forms of civic governance.

Natural disasters are increasingly affecting the world, taking lives unexpectedly and leaving many others injured and homeless. Moreover, disasters disrupt local, national and even global economies, instantly changing the direction of development. In the first half of 2011 alone, 108 natural disasters occurred, killing over 23 thousand people, affecting nearly 44 million others and causing more than 253 billion Us dollars of economic damages (cred 2011,1). Large urban settlements have become increasingly vulnerable to the impacts of natural disasters. The concentration of substandard infrastructure and housing, material assets, and inherent socio-economic inequalities increase vulnerability to disasters in large urban areas, especially in developing countries. The size, number, functions, and geographical distribution of largeand megacities create a special concern for disaster risk. Good urban management practices can be a powerful catalyst for reducing losses from natural disasters, while simultaneously helping to develop a sustainable environment. Yet, the existing situation indicates that sustainable planning and risk management measures are not taken into consideration or may not be put into practice for a variety of financial, political, and social reasons. This book argues that, on one hand, socio-economic disparities resulting from unsustainable urban development can increase vulnerability to natural hazards, and on the other hand, when paired with natural hazards this increased vulnerability can negatively affect urban areas, resulting in further inequality. This book will showcase this argument with theoretical reviews and quantitative analyses on the interplay between sustainable development and disaster vulnerability as well as an in-depth case study of the role of urban planning and risk management practices in creating the socio-economic and spatial vulnerabilities and predicted earthquake risk in the megacity of Istanbul.
