Since filming this video, Ched Evans has issued an 'apology' similar to the one I mention he should make - (http://bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/30727380). However, the fact that he waited until Oldham withdrew their interest to make the apology makes me question its integrity.
Ched Evans is a former professional footballer who has just been released from prison after serving 2.5 years of his 5-year sentence for rape. He is now looking to return to football and this has caused a lot of widespread debate. In this video, I offer my thoughts on the matter. This is an ever-changing news story and as a result, some of what I say may become slightly out-dated as new developments happen, but the sentiments at the heart of what I'm saying remain true for this and any other cases of convicted criminals hoping to return to professional sport.

Footballer Ched Evans has had his conviction for rape quashed at the Court of Appeal in London, but will face a new trial. The ex-Wales international was jailed in 2012 for raping a 19-year-old at a Premier Inn near Rhyl, Denbighshire. The former Sheffield United, Manchester City and Norwich player was released from jail in October 2014 after serving half of his five-year term. Mr Evans, 27, has always denied raping the woman.

Hull City boss Steve Bruce has questioned the conviction of rapist Ched Evans and says the footballer should be given a chance to play again.
Evans, who was convicted in 2012, was released from prison in October and saw a move to Oldham collapse this week.
The 26-year-old has been refused the right to appeal, but the Criminal Cases Review Commission is studying his case.
"I might be upsetting people but there is a question of the rape and how he's been convicted by a jury," said Bruce.
"When you look at the evidence, it is there for appeal.
"It has divided opinion of course. When you look at the case in detail - and I don't think most people have really, because they have just seen Ched Evans as a convicted rapist - but when you look at the case and the evidence then certainly Ched has got a case."

Footballer Ched Evans, who was found guilty of raping a woman in a hotel, has released a video statement announcing his determination to play again.
The video was posted on his website following his release from prison last Friday after serving half of a five year prison sentence.
In the video Evans describes his guilt over cheating on partner Natasha Massey, who appears alongside him, and said he made “an incredibly foolish decision.”
The former Sheffield United striker said: “I hurt the woman I love with all my heart. Since that night I constantly regretted my act of infidelity and the damage that has been done on so many fronts because of it.
“The support that has been shown by Natasha our friends and family during the trial and the time spent in prison has kept me strong. It can’t have been an easy thing to have stood by someone who the court found guilty of such a destructive act.”
He said his lawyers had already taken steps to overturn the conviction and the sex was “consensual”.
Wearing a dark shirt and tie, the 25-year-old Welshman said: “Now that I have served the custodial part of my sentence of two and a half years, it is my hope that I will be able to return to football.
"If that is possible then I will do so with humility, having learnt a very painful lesson.
"I would like a second chance."
He added: “I don't believe I have a given right to play again, but for any club to take me on, I have learned a valuable lesson.
I know that over time I can prove myself to be a positive influence, not just on the pitch but also in the community."

Ched Evans
Chedwyn Michael "Ched" Evans (born 28 December 1988) is a Welsh footballer. Born in St Asaph, Denbighshire, Evans was signed by Manchester City from Chester City's youth set up in 2002 and he subsequently progressed through the ranks. Evans was loaned to Norwich City in 2007, where he scored 10 goals in 28 league appearances, before returning to his parent club. With first team opportunities at City limited he was subsequently sold to Sheffield United for £3 million in 2009. After an unspectacular first two seasons at Bramall Lane he scored 35 goals during the 2011–12 season. Evans also represented Wales at Wales under-21 and senior level, scoring on his debut for the national side in 2008, and making a total of 13 appearances.
Evans was convicted of rape in April 2012 and sentenced to five years in prison. He has not played professional football since being released on licence in October 2014.
Club career
Manchester City
Evans began his playing career in Rhyl, before spending two seasons in Chester City's youth set-up from where he moved to Manchester City in 2002 following the closure of Chester's youth team. During the 2006–07 season, Evans was a regular in the Academy and reserve teams and was also in the side that reached the final of the 2006 FA Youth Cup, where City lost to Liverpool. In May 2007, Evans signed his first professional contract with Manchester City.

The former Sheffield United striker said: “I hurt the woman I love with all my heart. Since that night I constantly regretted my act of infidelity and the damage that has been done on so many fronts because of it.
“The support that has been shown by Natasha our friends and family during the trial and the time spent in prison has kept me strong. It can’t have been an easy thing to have stood by someone who the court found guilty of such a destructive act.”
He said his lawyers had already taken steps to overturn the conviction and the sex was “consensual”.
Wearing a dark shirt and tie, the 25-year-old Welshman said: “Now that I have served the custodial part of my sentence of two and a half years, it is my hope that I will be able to return to football.
"If that is possible then I will do so with humility, having learnt a very painful lesson.
"I would like a second chance."
He added: “I don't believe I have a given right to play again, but for any club to take me on, I have learned a valuable lesson.
I know that over time I can prove myself to be a positive influence, not just on the pitch but also in the community."

Occasionally I'm asked what my favourite media interview has been to date. Occasionally I'm asked what my favourite media interview has been to date. It's probably this one with Julia https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=khShsJaRVrY in March 2013 - broadcast only a month after J4MB was launched - when she was working for LBC Radio (she announced live on air three weeks ago that she was leaving the station). I was talking on my mobile, and I find the lack of face-to-face contact in such radio interviews frustrating, but her friendly tone was welcome. It became apparent she'd gone to the trouble of reading our consultation document - the precursor to our 2015 general election manifesto https://j4mb.files.wordpress.com/2014/09/141228-v6-general-election-manifesto.pdf - and after outlining some of the content, she uttered a line which made me laugh out loud:
"I'm very surprised to say this, Mike, but I have an awful feeling you may have a point!"
Julia had probably spent more time preparing for our short discussion than anyone who's interviewed me before or since, sometimes for much longer pieces, whether for TV or radio. She's a consummate professional.
I was interested to watch her contribution to last Thursday's Question Time, in which a lady in the audience asked the following question:
"After serving his sentence for rape, should footballer Ched Evans be given a chance to continue with his career?"
To my mind, Julia's response was the only one from any of the five panelists which demonstrated intellect, fair-mindedness, and compassion. The responses from the first two of the other panelists (below) were predictably woeful, while the final two, both highly intelligent men, let themselves down:
- Liz Kendall, Labour MP since 2010, Shadow Minister for Care and Older People, former Special Adviser to Harriet Harman and Patricia Hewitt;
- Vince Cable, Lib Dem MP and Anti-Business Secretary, a prime mover behind the government's bullying of FTSE100 companies (FTSE350 companies are next in line) into appointing more women onto their boards despite the compelling evidence base https://c4mb.wordpress.com/improving-gender-diversity-on-boards-leads-to-a-decline-in-corporate-performance-the-evidence/ which Campaign for Merit in Business http://c4mb.wordpress.com presented to House of Commons and House of Lords inquiries, showing that one predictable consequence will be corporate financial decline.
- David Davis, the Conservative MP who I've been saying since 2005 should have been elected party leader, rather than David Cameron. To be honest, I'd have opted for a houseplant rather than Dave;
- Jimmy Wales, co-founder of Wikipedia.

When called in for questioning in his hometown of Rhyl with fellow footballer Clayton McDonald, who was found not guilty at the original trial, Evans told police: “We could have had any girl we wanted ... We’re footballers.”
Now he says he wants to speak to young players, who may hold a similar attitude, about the risks they are taking when consent is not clear.

“I have got an idea of what goes on in prison,’ he told the Mail on Sunday. “It was a situation I found myself in. A crime was not committed but nevertheless I was in a situation. I know 100% that lads and girls get themselves in that position. Until something comes of it you never think something will happen to you.”
Central to the prosecution’s case was that the waitress, who woke up alone in a hotel room in Rhyl and claims she had no memory of how she got there and what had happened, was unable to give consent for sex because she was too drunk.
He said: “I was young at the time and I was stupid and I wasn’t aware of the situations you could potentially find yourself in that would land you in trouble. I have never been taught about anything like that. You get your gambling and drinking training but nothing else on top of that. In this day and age people need educating on alcohol and consent.

From controversial law cases such as that of the footballer Ched Evans through to intense bursts of outrage at offensive jokes or unpopular opinions, the Twitterstorm seems to have replaced the mob in twenty-first-century imagination. While some defend the use of such tactics as a (mostly) harmless letting off of steam, others have become increasingly uncomfortable about what such tactics mean for the state of public debate more widely. In his much-discussed book, So You’ve Been Publically Shamed, journalist Jon Ronson explored the real-world effects of such vituperative mob justice, from unfairly destroying reputations to ruining lives: last year, an investigation into ‘trolls’ targeting the parents of Madeleine McCann ended in the suicide of one of the accused.
