Bangkok—People cry outside Siriraj Hospital on October 13 after the Royal Palace announced that King Bhumibol Adulyadej had died at 88. Bhumibol was the world’s longest-reigning monarch, having reigned for 70 years, and was widely revered by his 70 million subjects, most of whom have never known another king. He was credited with being a stabilizing and unifying figure as the country weathered decades of military coups and was known for his affinity for the saxophone, sailing, painting and photography. Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha said Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn would succeed his father to the throne.
