OK, I'm going to wrap up our live coverage of the AFL trade period there for today.

Let's have quick look at the big stories of day five.

  • The playing future of Hawthorn champion Jordan Lewis is up in the air.  From what we understand, the Hawks approached him to see if he would consider moving to another club.  He was hurt, but quickly decided he'd like to go to Melbourne.  The 'Dees were keen, but Hawthorn backflipped and decided that in fact, they'd prefer for Lewis to stay.  Watch this space.
  • Hawthorn champion Sam Mitchell is officially a West Coast Eagle and all for a low, low price.  The Hawks will get picks 52, 70 and 88 in exchange for Mitchell and picks 54 and 72. Essentially, that means Mitchell is going to the Eagles in exchange for pick 88.

  • Long-time 'Doggies player Matthew Boyd has re-signed and will stay on at the club next year.

  • The Tom Mitchell deal is official.  The Swans traded Mitchell and a round three selection (currently pick 57) to Hawthorn for a round one pick (14) and round 3 on-traded (52)

  • St Kilda have locked in Jack Steele, traded from Greater Western Sydney for a future second-round draft pick.

St Kilda and Hawthorn swap picks

The Saints will send pick 10 in this year's draft, as well as a fourth round pick (number 68 overall), to the Hawks.

In exchange St Kilda will get a first round pick in next year's draft and two 2016 second round picks (currently 23 and 36).

Gold Coast Suns general manager of football operations, Marcus Ashcroft, indicated to SUNS TV that the expansion club had wanted pick 14 from the Hawks for Jaeger O'Meara, but they traded that with Sydney for Tom Mitchell.

The Hawks now have pick 10, it could well be enough to get the young Sun to Waverley.

Brad Hill is leaving Hawthorn for Fremantle, where he'll play with his brother Stephen.

He told Trade Radio the Hawks had been "fantastic" about his desire to go home to WA.

Hill said of the players, it was most difficult tell Cyril Rioli and Jarryd Roughead he was leaving the club.

He was surprised fellow Hawk Sam Mitchell was headed to West Coast.

"It'll be weird playing each other, both in different teams," he said.

Melbourne haven't given up on trying to land Jordan Lewis, but Hawthorn insist the veteran wants to remain at Waverley.
Meanwhile, Hawthorn have been flooded with calls from upset fans about the departure of Sam Mitchell. Mitchell has also revealed that he had received a phone call from a distraught former Hawks president Ian Dicker.

Fairfax reporter Daniel Cherny has the story.

Done deals

Let's have a quick look at the deals done today.

  • Hawthorn champion Sam Mitchell is officially a West Coast Eagle.  The Hawks will get picks 52, 70 and 88 in exchange for Mitchell and picks 54 and 72. Essentially, that means  Mitchell is going to the Eagles in exchange for pick 88.
  • Western Bulldogs veteran Matthew Boyd has re-signed and will play on with the club next year.
  • St Kilda have secured Jack Steele from Greater Western Sydney for a future second-round draft pick.
  • The Tom Mitchell deal is done.  Sydney traded Mitchell and a round three selection (currently pick 57) to Hawthorn for a round one pick (14) and round 3 on-traded (52)

Reader thoughts

Here's Tigers fan David:

As a Richmond member, I'm glad they are not willing to do a straight swap of pick 6 for [Dion] Prestia. He is a B-grade midfielder, not an emerging superstar

Nate made some interesting points on Hawthorn's recruitment strategy:

I would have liked the Hawks to have made a play for Steele from GWS.  He has some pedigree, he wouldn't have cost too much and he doesn't have the injury history (risk?) that accompanies O'Meara.   O'Meara could become like Dangerfield but we saw from Geelong that even with Dangerfield dominating their midfield was no contest for Sydney's during the prelim final.  The Bulldogs have recruited a stack of medium sized athletic mids who prowl between half back and half foward, none of them cost the farm.  They all have vigour and have been empowered to attack the game.  I think the Hawks midfield even with O'Meara and Mitchell lacks depth to compete with GWS and the Bulldogs.

Here's Brent "Boomer" Harvey, the long-time champion who was de-listed by North Melbourne towards the end of the home and away season and later decided to retire.

Rumours were swirling today that West Coast were working hard to recruit North ruckman Todd Goldstein, but we don't think that's right.

Speaking to Trade Radio, Sam Mitchell said Hawks coach Alastair Clarkson was nicer than others thought.

Mitchell said Clarkson knew he was keen to pursue a coaching career and this trade gave him an opportunity to move into coaching at West Coast after his playing career was over.

"I think he was trying to look at for me and my career," he said.

Hawthorn "Couldn't have treated me with more respect throughout this whole period," he said.

Mitchell said being awarded Hawthorn's best and fairest this year was a "rather awkward night."

He told listeners that when he received the medal, he said Hawthorn was entering an interesting time.

"That was my way of saying there was something new around the corner," he said.

Hawthorn's list manager on Jordan Lewis

"Jordan's management explored whether there might be something for him beyond next years," Graham Wright said.

"From that perspective it was bought to us on Tuesday night. We had a brief conversation with Melbourne on Wednesday.

"As of yesterday afternoon we decided that we didn't really want Jordan to go anywhere. He's a required, contracted player.

Will he be there next year?

"At this stage, absolutely."

Thanks to Fairfax reporter Dan Cherny for the update.

Fairfax reporter Daniel Cherny was at the press conference with Hawthorn lists manager Graham Wright.  Here's more from him:

"For a lot of us it's a sad day for a lot of Hawthorn supporters and even us in here it's a sad day," Wright said of Sam Mitchell leaving to play for West Coast.

"There's always going to be a mixed reaction from supporters. We understand that. It's an emotional game.

"The supporters are very attached to Sam and what he's done for this football club has been outstanding."

Wright asked if Jordan Lewis will be at Hawthorn next year.

"At this stage, yes."

Then -

"Clarko says there's no full stop on culture." Hawthorn's famed culture does not hinge on one or two players.

And later -

"Sam [Mitchell] is 34, he needs to move on with his life."

I'll be bringing you all the news from that press conference, soon.

Reader's thoughts

After a flurry of activity this morning, things have calmed down a little this afternoon.

It's a good opportunity to share some of readers' thoughts .  Remember, you can tell me what you'd like your team to do this trade period via Twitter @larissanicholso or email larissa.nicholson@fairfaxmedia.com.au.

Daniel, via email, tells us the Eagles should look at a couple of other potential trades:

West Coast should be offering their 2nd Round Pick (currently 34) for Brisbane Lions captain Tom Rockliff.
West Coast should trade Pick 12 for Jarrod Pickett and Pick 15

Remember, small forward Jarrod Pickett is at GWS and has nominated the Blues as his preferred club.

A bit of perspective from an Adelaide fan.

How do think your club has done in this trade period so far?

Hawthorn's been really active, so has GWS, Fremantle and Collingwood.

But we haven't heard much from North Melbourne - Daniel Wells is leaving for 'Pies, Brent Harvey's retired along with three other veterans.  What do they need to do to fill some of those gaps next year?

Ty Vickery's off to the Hawks, but we haven't heard much from Richmond either.

Let me know what you think your team should be doing this trade period, on Twitter @larissanicholso or email larissa.nicholson@fairfaxmedia.com.au

It's official

Sydney midfielder Tom Mitchell will be joining the Hawks.  The clubs struck an in-principle deal earlier this week and it's now confirmed.  In exchange, the Swans will get a first-round draft pick and a swap of later draft picks.
