Brighton-based scientists Patricia and Peter Shaw had always wanted to choose the time and manner of their deaths. On October 27 2015, a day after Patricia’s 87th birthday, they ended their lives in a suicide pact.

The Big Sleep is a compelling long-form feature where the Shaw daughters reflect on their parents’ plan – and their remarkable lives. Written by Health Editor Julia Medew in collaboration with Multimedia Editor Felicity Lewis, this is a story that went viral online and was discussed heavily by The Age readers.

As an Age subscriber you can now watch an exclusive interview with Julia and Felicity, as they walk you through how the story originated and why they pursued it, despite being aware of the ethical challenges surrounding the sensitive issue of assisted suicide.

Hear first hand from Julia on her experience of working with the Shaw daughters still grieving for their parents, and from Felicity on how she played an important role in pulling together the elements to tell this story with sensitivity, compassion and respect.
