Chris Rock is returning to stand-up comedy and he's getting paid a lot of money to do it.
After an eight-year break from the stage, the comedian is filming two stand-up specials for Netflix in a deal rumoured to be worth a staggering $US40 million ($52 million).

Adam Sandler signed a four-movie deal with Netflix in 2014, but according to Forbes, the comedian is reportedly being paid around $US15 million ($19 million) per film.
Rock has moved away from stand up in the last decade, focusing on film and television roles as well as producing. The 51-year-old also hosted the Academy Awards twice, in 2005 and 2016, to great critical success.

His last stand up special was 2008's Chris Rock: Kill the Messenger on HBO, which won two Emmy Awards.
Since then, he has lent his voice for Disney's Madagascar, starred in Broadway play The Motherf---er with the Hat, directed Amy Schumer's Live at The Apollo special, and had cameos on Saturday Night Live, Louie and Empire.
"A comedian has to live in his head. All this comedy comes from a lonely place. When you're surrounded by an entourage, you're not living in your head."
