Nebojsa Marinkovic brace sees Perth Glory past Central Coast Mariners

Perth Glory import Nebojsa Marinkovic scored two goals in as many minutes to lift his side to a 2-1 victory over Central Coast in Saturday night's wooden spoon battle at nib Stadium.

The Mariners were on track to end their three-game losing run when Irish striker Roy O'Donovan scored in the 28th minute.

But a 62nd-minute free kick special from Marinkovic and another goal on the run from the Serbian in the 64th minute turned the contest on its head.

The result lifted Perth Glory (seven points) off the bottom of the table, with Central Coast (five) now propping up the table.

Glory entered the match having scored just one goal in their past five matches, and they were dealt another blow during the week when Brazilian forward Sidnei tore his quad at training.

Mariners keeper Paul Izzo on Saturday night did well to keep out Marinkovic's curling free kick in the 14th minute.

And the Central Coast custodian saved his team from major embarrassment when he quickly stuck out his boot to block out a wayward back pass from defender Matthew Sim.

O'Donovan broke the deadlock in the 28th minute, but defender Storm Roux deserved most of the credit.

Roux stripped Glory import Diego Castro of possession before sprinting 35 metres with the ball to catch Glory's defence on the hop.

Roux's perfectly-weighted pass found a surging O'Donovan in the box, with the Irish striker coolly slotting the ball through keeper Ante Covic's legs and into the back of the net.

O'Donovan came close to scoring a second goal shortly after halftime, only for his free header to miss the target.

The fluffed chance would prove to be costly.

Marinkovic levelled the scores with a low, curling free kick from just outside the box.

And two minutes later he sent the 5590 crowd into raptures when he latched onto Chris Harold's header before coolly slotting past Izzo.

Glory skipper Richard Garcia missed the chance to ice the game when his flying header sailed wide.

But Perth managed to survive a few nervy moments at the death to secure all three points.
