India, officially the Republic of India (Bhārat Gaṇarājya), is a country in South Asia. It is the seventh-largest country by area, the second-most populous country with over 1.2 billion people, and the most populous democracy in the world. Bounded by the Indian Ocean on the south, the Arabian Sea on the south-west, and the Bay of Bengal on the south-east, it shares land borders with Pakistan to the west;China, Nepal, and Bhutan to the north-east; and Myanmar (Burma) and Bangladesh to the east. In the Indian Ocean, India is in the vicinity of Sri Lanka and the Maldives; in addition, India's Andaman and Nicobar Islands share a maritime border with Thailand and Indonesia.
Home to the ancient Indus Valley Civilisation and a region of historic trade routes and vast empires, the Indian subcontinent was identified with its commercial and cultural wealth for much of its long history. Four religions—Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Sikhism—originated here, whereas Zoroastrianism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam arrived in the 1st millennium CE and also shaped the region's diverse culture. Gradually annexed by and brought under the administration of the British East India Company from the early 18th century and administered directly by the United Kingdom after the Indian Rebellion of 1857, India became an independent nation in 1947 after a struggle for independence that was marked by non-violent resistance led by Mahatma Gandhi.

Namaste (hello in Hindi) While I'm just back from a two week travel through northern India with an amazing group of friends, I felt the need to make a quick video which brings back the good memories and also shows some of the amazing sights India has to offer. Normally I focus on photography, so the shots in the video are just made very quickly and not with as much effort as I would like it to be. We also moved very fast from place to place, so it was hard to combine these two types of capturing at the same time. Sometimes there also was to much to look at which made us become overwhelmed and forget to grab the camera. I tried my very best and hope you like it as much as I do because bringing back the right memories can be a hard task. Facebook https://www.facebook.com/StijnDesmedtPhot...
This is a 27-minute HD video shot and produced by my friend, Don Munroe, from his October/November 2012 guided Intrepid Travel tour of Nepal and Northern India. The video begins in Kathmandu and includes stops in Chitwan National Park and Lumbini in Nepal, and in Varanasi, a boat ride down the Ganges, Orchha, Agra, and Delhi in India. It was shot on his Sony HDR-X150 HandyCam and edited using Windows MovieMaker. The background music was suggested by me and by D-J from Intrepid Travel and is: --- El Dorado -- Jorge Alfaro --- Reflexions -- Jorge Alfaro --- Bombay Railway -- Prem Joshua --- Khajuraho -- Temples and Monuments --- Nirvana -- Soul Food After this tour, Don continued on to tour Southern India, and his video of that is here: http://youtu.be/8i7v4YlEFxo If you have questions abou...

A perfect storm of poor judgment could have very easily resulted in loss of life during this encounter with an endangered Indian Elephant (Elephas maximus indicus). Animals are persecuted the world over when (stupid) humans show such a lack of respect for wildlife. This matriarch is understandably protecting her family from a perceived threat. The drivers know not to harass wildlife in such fashion, but pleasing a paying tourist apparently supersedes safety. It is not uncommon for elephants to ram a vehicle in defence, and had the vehicle flipped, the other poor decision maker in this video would have likely been crushed to death. And of course, (stupid) humans would blame the elephants! (The disrespect spreads into my vehicle, as the driver can be heard laughing at what has had fata...
India, subcontinent of diversity and contrasts, has attracted and fascinated travellers from time immemorial. Often, India didn't let them leave. India's unsettled past, its diverse culture, art and architecture make up a great mosaic that bewitches the visitors.
When you think India, if you think spicy food, snake charmers, dodging cows, the Taj Mahal, and total chaos- you’re thinking about Northern India. It's an adventure waiting to happen, and will leave you wondering why it only accounts for 1% of world tourism. Join Ricky Moreno as he explores Delhi, Rajasthan, Agra, Rishikesh, and Varanasi. Welcome to Delhi. Say goodbye to your personal space. It’s crowded, it’s overwhelming, and definitely exhausting. One day here can feel like an entire week. The only way you’ll have any fun is to just put down the Purell and join the party. Instead of going straight to Agra to see the Taj Mahal, first I head west to hang with some locals in Rajasthan. Here, the people are welcoming, the desert is sprawling, and the camels command the streets. And it...

In Part One of my India travel video guide, I begin my travels in India with Calcutta (Kolkata). India had long been on my bucket list of countries to travel to in the world, and in April, 2013, I finally made it there, starting with Calcutta, with no better reason than the fact was I knew so little about that part of the country. Calcutta was once the capital of the British Empire in India, and today it's home to over 14 million people, which means the city itself is a crowded, dense, loud, but endlessly fascinating place to explore. In this video I explore the alleyways and grand buildings that make up B.B.D. Bagh, the area where the city was founded. After checking out a parade (a very common occurrence I was to later learn) and grabbing a roadside cup of chai, I stop at the home of f...
Ten travel tips for anyone planning a trip to South India! I traveled the North part of India (Delhi) as well and most of these tips apply to that area too. But there was something quite special about the South: Tamil Nadu and Kerala...both areas were lush, tropical and beyond fascinating. One local rightly described the South as "India Light" and I couldn't agree more. I hope these tips help save you money and keep you safe and happy on your journey!
Check out my Darjeeling travel guide here - http://migrationology.com/2013/05/darjeeling-travel-guide-things-you-need-to-know/ | Have Facebook? https://www.facebook.com/migrationology Darjeeling, India, is located in the very Northern part of the West Bengal state. Coming from Kolkata, it's hard to believe that Darjeeling is actually in the same state, it's such a vastly different place. In order to get to Darjeeling, India, it's easiest to take the train to the nearest station which is located at New Jalpaiguri (known just as NJP by the train code). There's little to do in NJP, but from right outside the train station you can then board to a shared jeep and for 200 Rupees, you can take the jeep straight to Darjeeling. The jeep normally takes about 4 hours to reach the town and they wil...

In a very remote and stunning part of northern India our much-loved friend Nick Klotz led a 4 week tour by rocky road and by foot that stopped at Lake Chanderta al in the high Spiti Valley. On this magical day we trekked down from 5,700m to about 4,700m. It was sunny, windy, dry and cool. At the lake we soothed our feet and Nick managed to conjure a Kayak. That night we camped nearby and played cricket with seasonal shepherds. Dinner was our usual lovely goat curry, vegetables and Old Monk Rum. It was a freezing windy night, sleeping on hard stony ground. Most of the group had mild altitude sickness, vomiting, and couldn't sleep. It didn't matter - It was the best day of an unforgettable month. You will spot NIck in this video swimming, kayaking and adorning his tent with his Arsenal flag...

Subscribe to our channel http://bit.ly/AJSubscribe There is a cautious calm in northern India after a court ruled on Thursday that a disputed holy site in the town of Ayodhya should be shared between Muslims and Hindus. The judges gave control of the main contested section of the site, where a mosque was torn down in 1992, to Hindus. Other parts of the site will be controlled by Muslims and another Hindu sect. More than 200,000 police had been deployed across the country and temporary jails were set up as the government prepared for Hindu-Muslim riots in the wake of one of the most divisive court cases in the nation's history. On this episode of Inside Story, we ask: Just what security implications will this ruling have in the coming days and will judicial process put an end to this combu...

There is a wind, my Billy, and it's awful strong
Come for you, and anyone who's helped you along.
But I want to live, live, live and let the stars shine bright
yes, I want to live, live, live and let it on alright
And when that bird sings from over that silver wall
I don't want to fight it, Billy, 'cause i want to go
There's a Northern wind, Billy, blowin' up a southern change
and a Northern wind really makin' me feel kinda strange
there's a Northern wind, Billy, blowin' up a southern change
and a Northern wind really makin' me feel kinda strange
And with this gun goes everything I want to say
Not for you, but for anyone who takes it away
Let it fill his life, life, life until there's nothing left
Let it kill his wife, wife, wife until he goes to bed
And when that bird sings from over that silver wall
I don't want to fight it, Billy, 'cause I want to go
There's a Northern wind, Billy, blowin' up a southern change
and a Northern wind really makin' me feel kinda strange
