Broad gauge railways use a track gauge (distance between the rails) greater than the standard gauge of 1,435 mm (4 ft 8 1⁄2 in).
In Britain the Great Western Railway, designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, pioneered broad gauge in 1838 with a gauge of 7 ft 1⁄4 in (2,140 mm), and retained this gauge until 1892. Some harbours also used railways of this gauge for construction and maintenance. These included Portland Harbour and Holyhead Breakwater, which used a locomotive for working sidings. As it was not connected to the national network, this broad-gauge operation continued until the locomotive wore out in 1913.
The gauge initially proposed by Brunel was 7 ft (2,134 mm) exactly but this was soon increased by 1⁄4 in (6 mm) to get round clearance problems identified during early testing.
It became apparent that standardization on a single gauge throughout a rail transport system was advantageous. Rolling stock did not need to match the gauge exactly; a difference of a few millimetres could be coped with, so that interoperability on systems with gauges only slightly different was possible.

A race of sorts with a 3 car down Belair railcar on the Broad Gauge departing Coromandle station, as a down Tailem bend grain aproaches on the Standard Gauge. Note the horn blowing as several impatient idiots run across the level crossing in front of both trains.
A visit to Dicot during a Broad Gauge Steam Day, all 3 demonstration lines were in operation - 1338 on the 'Branch line', Pannier 3650 on the main line and 'Fire Fly' on the Broad Gauge line, the signalling was in operation and some shunting took place to prepare for an evening charter with Pannier 3650, currently in Stephenson Clarke Industrial livery. This is a model railway of lost station thought out by Brunel during the broad gauge era of the Great Western Railway. He has made all his stock and locomotives by hand, he has even built unique models of broad gauge locos that don't even exist in the model railway society. This gentleman is a member of the broad gauge society and does regular lectures. I visited this amazing hand built layout after being contacted about a family member. This man was amazing to talk to. As well as building his own scratch built layout by hand, he has a ton of railway memorabilia. Such memorabilia consists of the only picture of a sun class broad gauge engine in the UK. a real rush for any braod gauge or standard gauge rail enthusiast.

An old AWE Broad Gauge Steam Locomotive was steamed up especially for us when we visited the Steam Heritage Museum in Rewari (NR). The sound of the steam being spewed out is in itself a great experience. To top it, a few detonators were placed by the Museum officials to create more excitement and drama.

The Northeast Frontier Railways (NFR) Meter Gauge Line from Lumding to Badarpur also known as the Barak Valley, a 221-km railway track that was built by the British through the most difficult terrains and mountains in Assam’s Dima Hasao district was also an engineering marvel comprising of 37 tunnels and 586 bridges that came in to operations in the year 1903.The line was primarily constructed to transport tea, coal and timber produced in the upper Assam region.Post the Partition of Bangladesh in 1947 the Lumding-Badarpur section however became the only life-line for land-locked Tripura, Mizoram, the Barak Valley in southern Assam as also south-eastern Manipur due to the borders. The 111 year old MG line became history in 2014 to make way for a broad gauge track as a part of the uni-ga...

PLEASE NOTE! THIS IS A RE-UPLOAD. The Steam in Nepal 2005 video I uploaded on the 8th January acquired many nasty artefacts during the YT upload/conversion process. This is a DivX version that You Tube seems to prefer. The Nepal Railways Corporation Ltd. operates two railway lines: a 6 km broad gauge line from Raxaul in India to Sirsiya Inland Container Depot in Nepal and a 53 km 762 mm (2 ft 6 in) narrow gauge line from Jaynagar in India to Bijalpura in Nepal. The latter line is composed of two sections: 32 km between Jaynagar and Janakpur and 21 km from Janakpur to Bijalpura. The Janakpur line is used largely for passengers and the Sirsiya (Birganj) line only for cargo freight. This video covers a visit to the Jaynagar -- Janakpur section in December 2005. By this time the line was ope...
CAUTION: THIS VIDEO IS 21 MINS LONG Finally it was my turn to experience the Meter Gauge (MG) ride and this was nailed to my luck on 26th day of June ' 2012.Excluding the Ooty mountain train , Thiruvarur - Pattukottai MG Passenger will be the last running MG route in Southern Railways rather South India. The original route of this train was Thiruvarur -- Karaikuddi via Pattukottai which has now been curtailed to Thiruarur-Pattukottai at a distance of 76 KM. My journey was even shorter as I had to return back . Arrived at Thiruvarur Junction @ 7:45 AM by taking the Tanjavur-Thiruvarur Local train. I was all excited to see the little Golden Rock YDM4 6321 with 4 MG coaches attached standing ready on track to kick start its journey. I had 25 mins before the train could takeoff , there w...
