How do you analyze a circuit with resistors in series and parallel configurations?
With the Break It Down-Build It Up MethodIn
This video we solve a combination series and parallel resistive circuit problem for the voltage across, current through and power dissipated by the circuit's resistors.We redraw the circuit in linear form to more easily identify series and parallel relationships. Then we combine resistors using equivalent resistance equations.
After redrawing several times we end up with a single resistor representing the equivalent resistance of the circuit. We then apply Ohm's Law to this simple (or rather simplified) circuit and determine the circuit current (I-0 in the videoRetracing our redraws, we determine the voltage across and current through each resistor in the circuit using Ohm's Law.
After tabulating our solutions we determine the power dissipated by each resistor.

This field first became an identifiable occupation in the latter half of the 19th century after commercialization of the electric telegraph, the telephone, and electric power distribution and use. Subsequently, broadcasting and recording media made electronics part of daily life. The invention of the transistor, and later the integrated circuit, brought down the cost of electronics to the point they can be used in almost any household object.
Electrical engineering has now subdivided into a wide range of subfields including electronics, digital computers, power engineering, telecommunications, control systems, radio-frequency engineering, signal processing, instrumentation, and microelectronics. The subject of electronic engineering is often treated as its own subfield but it intersects with all the other subfields, including the power electronics of power engineering.
