The Caulfield Cup is a Melbourne Racing Club Group 1 Thoroughbred horse race held under handicap conditions, for horses aged three years old and older, over a distance of 2400 metres. It is held at Caulfield Racecourse, Melbourne, Australia in mid October. The prizemoney is A$3,000,000.
The race has become one of Australia's richest Thoroughbred horse races and the richest of its type in the world (2,400 metre or 11⁄2 miles). The race is held annually in October on the third day and final day of the MRC Spring Carnival. Performances in the Caulfield Cup are one of the possible qualification methods for a run in the Melbourne Cup which is held 16 days later.
During World War II the race was run at Flemington Racecourse and in 1943 the race was run in divisions.
The field is limited 18 starters with 4 emergency entries which is decided by a ballot system. The prize money, wins, and placing in lead up races are among the major factors that determine the eligibility of a horse. Automatic entry are awarded to winners of the Group 2 Herbert Power Stakes and the Listed Mornington Cup.
Australian-bred Mongolian Khan (Holy Roman Emperor x Centafit) started the race favourite and didn't let the punters down, going on to add the Group 1 Caulfield Cup to his earlier success as a three-year-old in the Group 1 New Zealand Derby and the Group 1 Australian Derby. Footage: www.racing.com
Entering the 1997 Caulfield Cup, what was known of the Jack Denham-trained gelding Might and Power was that he was a solid galloper possessing the talent to have won at Group 3 level. But, at that point anyway, he was certainly no superstar. On October 18, 1997, that changed. Significantly. At the end of the 2400 metres of the 1997 Caulfield Cup, Might and Power had demoralised a quality field to the tune of seven lengths under Jim Cassidy, recording the then-fastest time ever to be run in the race: 2 minutes, 26.2 seconds. Might and Power went on to become just the second horse in history after Rising Fast to win all of the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups and Cox Plate, stamping himself one of the greatest horses ever to grace the turf in Australian racing’s rich history in the process....
1. Dunaden 2. Alcopop 3. Lights of Heaven 4. Americain In what will go down as one of the best editions of the Caulfield Cup in recent time, French galloper Dunaden stormed down the outside to beat Australian hopes Alcopop and Lights of Heaven. 2010 Melbourne Cup winner Americain finished fourth.

Presented by Crown Golden Ale Already boasting a CV dripping with Group 1 victories, including the previous year’s Cox Plate, Northerly entered the 2002 Caulfield Cup having recently won all of the Craiglee, Underwood and Turnbull Stakes. Affectionately known by his countless adoring fans as “The Fighting Tiger,” not only did the Fred Kersley-trained champion carry the number one saddlecloth, but was asked to carry two kilograms more than second top weight Universal Prince, and a further 1-½kg or more than the remainder of a field, including subsequent dual Cox Plate winner Fields Of Omagh; a tough task in any handicap, let alone the most gruelling mile-and-a-half race in the country. Despite his impost – which would be the most oppressive for any horse since Ming Dynasty lumped the sam...
