Bharathan

Bharathan (Malayalam: ഭരതന്‍, 14 November 1946 – 30 July 1998) was an Indian film director, artist, lyricist, music director, sculptor, poster designer, editor and art director. Bharathan is noted for being the founder of a new school of film making in Malayalam cinema, along with Padmarajan, in the 1980s, which created films that were widely received while also being critically acclaimed. A train of directors, and screen writers followed this school onto the 1990s including Sibi Malayil, Kamal, Lohithadas, Jayaraj, and Sathyan Anthikkad.

He is widely regarded as one of the most influential and prolific filmmakers of Malayalam cinema and has directed more than 50 movies in multiple languages. He was born at Engakkadu near Wadakkancherry, in present-day Thrissur district of Kerala, India.

Early career

After completing his diploma from the College of Fine Arts, Thrissur City, Bharathan entered the world of Cinema as an art director for Vincent, an accomplished director of the time and the movie was Ghandarva Kshetram. He got the inspiration from his uncle, P. N. Menon — a veteran film director. After working as an art director and assistant director for a few movies, he made his directorial debut in 1974 with Prayanam, based on Padmarajan’s script. It also marked the rise of two early proponents of middle-stream Malayalam cinema.

Paravoor Bharathan

Paravoor Bharathan was an Indian actor of Malayalam films. He started his career in movies during the 1950s. Bharathan is known as a versatile actor and has played a variety of roles including negative roles, character roles and comedy roles.

Life

Bharathan was born to Vadakkekarayil Kochannan Koran and Kurumbakutty in 1928 at Vavakkad, Moothakunnam in North Paravoor, Cochin. He went to S.N.M. High School, Moothakunnam but, had to discontinue his studies when his father died. His father was a coconut plucker and mother was a coir maker. His father died when he was very young and his mother took care of him.

He used to act during his school days as well. On one occasion, he caught the eye of Kedamangalam Sadanandan, a noted Kathaprasangam artiste, who introduced him to the state troupe - Pushpitha during mid-1940s. He started acting in state shows in and around Paravoor. He has also performed dramas in actor Jose Prakash's drama troupe.

When the play Rakthabandham was being made into a film, Vijayabhanu recommended Bharathan's name for a role. The movie released in 1951 and was directed by Vel Swamy. It had Cherthala Vasudeva Kurup, Ambalapuzha Meenakshi, S. D. Subbiah and others in main roles. Bharathan went on to act in films like Kerala Kesari and Marumakal.

Jagathy Sreekumar

Sreekumar Achary (born 5 January 1951), better known by his stage name Jagathy Sreekumar, is an Indian film actor known for his work in Malayalam cinema. He is popular mainly for his comedy roles. He has also directed two films and has written screenplays for two films.

Life

Sreekumar was born on 5 January 1951 in Jagathy, Thiruvananthapuram. He is the son of Malayalam dramatist and writer Jagathy N. K. Achary (1924–1997) (also fondly known as Jagathy) and his wife Prasanna from the famed Edavancaud family of Mavelikkara. N. K. Achary was an All India Radio employee. He has two brothers, Krishnakumar and Jameela Murali (Step brother) and a sister, Sugadamma (Step sister). Even from childhood, Jagathy Sreekumar had the dream of becoming an actor. Jagathy attended the Model School in Trivandrum, and graduated with a bachelor's degree from Mar Ivanios College, Trivandrum. After college he worked as a Medical Representative and later became an actor.

Jagathy married Mallika Sukumaran in 1976 and divorced in 1979. He later married Shobha in 1984. They have a son, Rajkumar, and a daughter, Parvathy. He also has a daughter Sreelakshmi with his third wife Kala.
