Source: http://www.spreaker.com/user/xzoneradiotv/cold-equation-1955 Cold Equations aka: "The Cold Equations" Year: 1955 Genre: Space Exploration Story by: Tom Godwin Classic story of a space pilot on an emergency medical run who finds himself carrying a stowaway. His shuttle, however, does not have enough fuel to land with the extra weight. Versions of this story also appeared on Exploring Tomorrow, Future Tense, Sci-Fi Radio, and the CBC pilot Faster Than Light. Reviews: This is one of the saddest OTR episodes I've heard so far. --- David Hassell Very good episode. The woman snuck on board because her husband was on the target world, and she had no idea about the difficulties of fuel consumption in the far frontiers. It's a sad story. If she stays on the ship, sixteen men die, including her husband. If she leaves, she dies. There is no third option. And that's that. A cold, cold situation. Very well done. --- Brad Reed

Hey everyone! I'm doing a new semi-regular segment on the channel called the "Conservation Equation". The premise is fairly simple - Think of global wildlife conservation as a complex equation comprised of numerous factors (of which most of us are simply not experts) - societal factors, political factors, economic factors, geographic factors, climate factors, biologic factors, and so on and so forth. My goal is to talk to various experts of these individual factors in order to shed some light on some of the smaller, more ingestible parts of the greater equation. It's a tad more cerebral than my other stuff. I want these discussions to help educate people about REAL science and REAL solutions to REAL problems. I don't want to be yet another in a long line of emotions-tugging, yet woefully and irresponsibly misinformed animal advocates we see all too often in this world. Knowledge is power! In this first episode, I talk to a good friend of mine, Dr. Brian W. Davis, a genomicist at the National Institute of Health who is working on creating the world's premier repository for exotic animal genetics. The work he is a part of has the potential for tremendous impact regarding the future conservation and insight of various exotic animals across the world. Lt. Col., U.S. Army (retired) Thomas E. Bearden's letter to ARPA Dear ARPA-E: This is a serious technical response to your website’s invitation to offer suggestions, recommendations, and comments. I would deeply appreciate it if you did treat this as a serious response, whose results come from 40 years of personal arduous work in the breakthrough energy area. I deeply believe that understanding some of these matters offered and discussed can directly and strongly assist you in your overwhelmingly important mission to solve — as quickly and completely as possible — the energy crisis now besetting our country and the other nations of the world. As an unexpected bonus, we also include an explanation (which was known to Dirac!) of how to directly and rather simply engineer physical reality as you wish. Please have the proper physicists study that area intensely; the Soviet Union already is well-aware of this area and its development. Also, a very fine team of physicists, led by Dr. Dan Solomon, have presently published rigorous papers in leading physics journals pointing out that the arbitrary removal of negative energy from physics in 1934 was a grave error, totally against scientific method. Among other things, we will point out that the real reason for the present energy crisis is the century-old deliberate crippling of our electrical engineering model; this reason has not been understood by our own academicians and is still not understood by them. It is easily shown to be true, however, by a straightforward higher group symmetry analysis of the Heaviside-Lorentz equations used as the model for electrical engineering. The points we make are very technical; please have one or more physicists, knowledgeable in group theory and also higher group symmetry electrodynamics, examine the attached papers and advise you. The main points of my comments and response, including a little necessary background, are: 1. In 1892 electrical engineering had not yet been born. Maxwell had died in 1879, and almost immediately several scientists — Heaviside, Gibbs, etc. — had leaped in and savaged and highly simplified Maxwell’s quaternion-like theory (which was 20 equations in 20 unknowns), producing vector algebra in the process. “Electrical engineering” had not yet been born; knowledge of electrodynamics was confined to approximately three dozen physicists worldwide who knew something about electrodynamics. 2. Lorentz was toying with the Heaviside equations, preparing to use them as the model to be used for the new technology to be called “electrical engineering” and to be taught in the universities. Lorentz was a great scientist — but also noted for “borrowing” other scientists’ work and publishing it and receiving credit for it. This has been validated by Okun and Jackson (Jackson is one of the leading classical electrodynamicists of the world). See J. D. Jackson and L. B. Okun, “Historical roots of gauge invariance,” Reviews of Modern Physics, Vol. 73, July 2001, p. 663-680. Discusses roots and history of gauge invariance, verifies that Ludwig Lorenz (without the “tâ€) first symmetrically regauged Maxwell’s equations, although it has been misattributed to H. A. Lorentz (with the “tâ€) as being first. This is an excellent coverage of the history of who did what and when, and who got credit for it! 3. The beginning rise of electric power was proceeding. Historically, this was also a time when certain rich and ruthless financiers were setting up huge financial empires and were consolidating them. Such a ruthless man was the leading financier J. P. Morgan, as is well-established by history. 4. The major electrical researcher/experimenter/inventor of impact was Nikola Tesla, who had discovered that the “medium was active” — in short, he had discovered aspects of energy from the modern seething virtual state vacuum. Electrical engineering did not exist; for his university education, Tesla had been educated in the physics of the day. Modern physics such as quantum mechanics, special and general relativity, gauge field theory, and quantum field theory, however, was not yet born. Would-be inventor Barney Schlessinger is bored with his life until he meets another inventor in a parallel world.
The Coming Anarchy: How scarcity, crime, overpopulation, tribalism, and disease are rapidly destroying the social fabric of our planet is an influential article written by journalist Robert D. Kaplan, which was first published in the February 1994 edition of The Atlantic Monthly. It is considered to be one of the fundamental theses on the state of current world affairs in the post Cold War era, and is ranked on the same level of doctrinal importance as Samuel Huntington's Clash of Civilizations and Francis Fukuyama's The End of History and the Last Man theses. It has also been criticized as a Malthusian reading of the world, for blaming the situation on its victims and for overlooking alleged political and economical causes such as neoliberal policy. Fukuyama believed that the end of the Cold War would bring about a new era of peace in world affairs. Kaplan argued that the Cold War was the closest the world would ever get to Utopia. The new struggles were no longer neatly ideological, but cultural and historical. New tensions such as population increases, urbanization, and resource depletion are undermining fragile governments across the developing world. The article was republished as the first chapter of the book The Coming Anarchy in 2000. The book also included the controversial article Was Democracy Just A Moment? and several others by Kaplan. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Coming_Anarchy Robert David Kaplan (born June 23, 1952 in New York City) is the author of many books on foreign affairs and travel, whose work over three decades has appeared in The Atlantic, The Washington Post, The New York Times, The New Republic, The National Interest, Foreign Affairs and The Wall Street Journal, among other newspapers and publications. His more controversial essays about the nature of US power have spurred debate in academia, the media, and the highest levels of government. Kaplan is the author of the influential article "The Coming Anarchy", published in The Atlantic Monthly in 1994. A frequent theme in his work is the reemergence of cultural and historical tensions temporarily suspended during the Cold War. From March 2008 to spring 2012, Kaplan was a Senior Fellow at the Center for a New American Security in Washington, which he rejoined in 2015.[1] Between 2012 and 2014, he was chief geopolitical analyst at Stratfor, a private global forecasting firm. In 2009, Secretary of Defense Robert Gates appointed Kaplan to the Defense Policy Board, a federal advisory committee to the United States Department of Defense. In 2011, Foreign Policy magazine named Kaplan as one of the world's "top 100 global thinkers." Bibliography Carta's Guide to Israel and Jordan. Jerusalem, Israel: Carta. 1980. ISBN 965-220-023-9. Scientifically, this phase of her life was marked by the observation that broken ends of maize chromosomes behaved in unusual ways and that repairing the breaks required genetic activity. This observation was to come into its own much later, initially in connection with McClintock's work on transposable elements and more recently with the study of chromosome ends (telomeres). The turning point in a hitherto uncertain life came in 1941 with the offer of a research appointment to the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (in NewYork) of the Carnegie Institution of Washington. McClintock remained at Cold Spring Harbor for the rest of her life. (She diedin 1992.) Engines wheeze, frostbite consumes limbs, death in the extreme cold is just a mistake away. Yet, a small city thrives atop 9,000 feet of ice. A probe hurtles through the blistering cold of deep space. A ship opens a lifeline on frozen seas. Come in from the cold while we explore some of Earth's most frigid places and examine how man copes with sub-zero climates. With the advance of technology, our boundaries have expanded--from the North and South Poles, to the depths beneath the Arctic and Antarctic sea ice, to the Moon, Mars, and outward to Saturn. Enter these forbidding territories, guided by a special breed of experts as we inspect the new U.S. South Pole Station, try on the latest Polartec fashions with anti-microbial fibers, ride on the newest snowmobiles and Sno-Cats, sail through glacial waters on ice-breaking ships, and fly on an LC-130 transport plane. And we'll see what NASA has on the planning board for deep-space exploration, including a beach-ball robot explorer, and learn from scientists studying fish in the waters off Antarctica to understand glycoproteins, which may keep frozen tissue healthy longer for transplantation. In 1975, the Trans-Alaska Pipeline's peak construction year, over 28,000 were employeed by Alyeska. In the two years it took to build the pipeline, 31 were killed in accidents. During Operation Deep Freeze's yearly re-supply of Antarctica's science stations, 8 million gallons of fuel and 11 milion pounds of cargo are delivered to McMurdo Station. Synthetic fleece is made from finely spun plastic fibers. Approximately 25 two-liter plastic bottles can be recycled to make one fleece jacket. In 1997, Russia's Vostok station in Antarctica reported the coldest temperature in the world: -132 degrees Fahrenheit. This is colder than dry ice and cold enough to make steel shatter. How low can they go? 100, 150, 200 degrees below zero? This documentary explores the lower limits of "fridge-tech" in DEEP FREEZE. Bundle up, grab a spoon and spend some time in a massive 12-story facility filled with 135 million pounds of ice cream. Enter Arctic vaults that warehouse millions of different seeds and learn how scientists have mastered temperatures two-hundred-below-zero and even lower! Explore how cold not only preserves and chills, but can also shatter rubber tires, strengthen steel, and fuel rockets. Finally, visit Alcor, where researchers keep cadavers on ice in hopes of future revival.
In addition to being a political and economic battle, the confrontation between the United States and the Soviet Union was a clash of cultures. Communist party leaders depicted the United States as a cultural black hole and cited their own significant culture as evidence that they were the inheritors of the European Enlightenment (Wilford 100). Americans, on the other hand accused the Soviets of “disregarding the inherent value of culture” and subjugating art to the controlling policies of a totalitarian political system. The United States saw itself as being saddled with the responsibility of preserving and fostering the best cultural traditions of western civilization, as many European artists sought refuge in the United States before, during, and after World War II (Wilford 101). Europe and European Universities turned out to be in the epicenter of the Cultural Cold War. In 1950, the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) surreptitiously created the Congress for Cultural Freedom (CCF) to counter the Cominform’s “peace offensive”(Wilford 101). The Congress had “offices in thirty-five countries, employed dozens of personnel, published over twenty prestige magazines, held art exhibitions, owned a news and features service, organized high-profile international conferences, and rewarded musicians and artists with prizes and public performances” at its peak (Saunders 2000). The intent of these endeavors was to “showcase” US and European high culture, including not just musical works but paintings, ballets, and other artistic avenues, for the benefit of neutralist foreign intellectuals (Wilford 102). Many US government organizations used classical symphonies, Broadway musicals, and jazz performances (including musicians such as Dizzy Gillespie) in attempts to persuade audiences worldwide America was a cradle for the growth of music (Wilford 108-109). The CIA and, in turn the CCF, displayed reluctance to patronize America’s musical avant-garde, experimental, including artists such as Milton Babbitt and John Cage. The CCF took a more conservative approach, as outlined under its General Secretary, Nicolas Nabokov, and concentrated its efforts on presenting older European works that had been banned or by the Communist Party (Wilford 109). In 1952, the CCF sponsored the “Festival of Twentieth-Century Masterpieces of Modern Arts” in Paris. Over the next thirty days, the festival hosted nine separate orchestras which performed works by over 70 composers, many of whom had been dismissed by communist critics as “degenerate” and “sterile,”; included in this group were composers such as Dmitri Shostakovich and Claude Debussy (Wilford 109). The festival opened with a performance of Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring, as performed by the Boston Symphony Orchestra (109). Thomas Braden, a senior member of the CIA said: “The Boston Symphony Orchestra won more acclaim for the US in Paris than John Foster Dulles or Dwight D. Eisenhower could have brought with a hundred speeches” (Wilford 110) The CIA in particular utilized a wide range of musical genres, including Broadway musicals, and even the jazz of Dizzy Gillespie, to convince music enthusiasts across the globe that the U.S. was committed to the musical arts as much as they were to the literary and visual arts. Under the leadership of Nabokov, the CCF organized impressive musical events that were anti-communist in nature, transporting America’s prime musical talents to Berlin, Paris, and London to provide a steady series of performances and festivals. In order to promote cooperation between artists and the CCF, and thus extend their ideals, the CCF provided financial aid to artists in need of monetary assistance. However, the CCF failed to offer much support for classical music associated with the likes of Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven because it was deemed an “authoritarian” tool of Soviet communism and wartime German and Italian fascism. The CCF also distanced itself from experimental musical avant-garde artists such as Milton Babbit and John Cage, preferring to focus on earlier European works that had been banned or condemned as “formalist” by Soviet authorities. During the Cold War, Louis Armstrong was promoted around the world as a symbol of US culture, racial progress, and foreign policy. It was during the Jim Crow Era that Armstrong was appointed a Goodwill Jazz Ambassador, and his job entailed representing the American government’s commitment to advance the liberties of African Americans at home, while also working to endorse the social freedom of those abroad. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_CIA_and_the_Cultural_Cold_War
Arthur C. Clarke presents this unusual documentary on the mathematical discovery of the Mandelbrot Set (M-Set) in the visually spectacular world of fractal geometry. This show relates the science of the M-Set to nature in a way that seems to identify the hand of God in the design of the universe itself. Dr. Mandelbrot in 1980 discovered the infinitely complex geometrical shape called the Mandelbrot Set using a very simple equation with computers and graphics. Arthur C. Clarke's soft-spoken style sets the "common man" at ease, and his pinpoint commentary makes the concept of fractals easy to understand. One need not be a stellar mathematician to grasp the concepts and why they are profound. The experts are trotted out, and they, too, explain fractal geometry in ways that are accessible to everyman. Fractals are part of our lives, and maths informs everything that exists, whether natural or man-made. When I saw this on TV several years ago, it reminded me of the Douglas Adams (of "Hitchhiker's Guide" fame) book "Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency." In the novel, a software engineer tries to create a program that sets the flapping of a bird's wings to music using mathematical equations. That is exactly what fractals seem to do; they describe events in nature in mathematical ways, and the section of "Colors" which discusses this is eye-opening. The Hindu 2015-03-29World is a common name for the whole of human civilization, specifically human experience, history, or the human condition in general, worldwide, i.e. anywhere on Earth.
In a philosophical context it may refer to: (1) the whole of the physical Universe, or (2) an ontological world (see world disclosure). In a theological context, world usually refers to the material or the profane sphere, as opposed to the celestial, spiritual, transcendent or sacred. The "end of the world" refers to scenarios of the final end of human history, often in religious contexts.
World history is commonly understood as spanning the major geopolitical developments of about five millennia, from the first civilizations to the present.
World population is the sum of all human populations at any time; similarly, world economy is the sum of the economies of all societies (all countries), especially in the context of globalization. Terms like world championship, gross world product, world flags etc. also imply the sum or combination of all current-day sovereign states.
i've been outside for too long now,
i've seen the seasons come and go.
could be today may be the day,
tomorrow comes and i'll stay the same.
don't know my place, never thought it'd be this way.
can't change my face, never thought i'd see this change.
too many times i've passed these doors,
i've seen them open just to close.
now i'm searching for some new key.
locked up, locked out it comes down on me.
don't know my place, never thought it'd be this way.
can't change my face, never thought i'd see this change.
i've come to see this change,
i've come to stay the same i'll stay until i'm old, unwind, release, unfold.
Baby, oh
Even in my heart I see
You're not bein' true to me
Deep within my soul I feel
Nothing's like it used to be
Sometimes I wish I could turn back time
Impossible as it may seem
But I wish I could so bad baby
Quit play's games with my heart
Quit playin' games with my heart (with my heart)
Before you tear us apart (my heart)
Quit playin' games with my heart
I should've known from the start
You know you've gotta stop (from my heart)
You're tearin' us apart (my heart, my heart)
Quit playin' games with my heart
I live my life the way
To keep you comin' back to me
Everything I do is for you
So what is it that you can't see
Sometimes I wish I could turn back time,
Impossible as it may seem
But I wish I could so bad, baby
You better quit playin' games with my heart
Quit playin' games with my heart (with my heart)
Before you tear us apart (my heart)
Quit playin' games with my heart
I should've known from the start
You know you've gotta stop (from my heart)
You're tearin' us apart (my heart, my heart)
Quit playin' games with my heart
Quit playin' games
Baby, baby the love that we had was so strong
Don't leave me hangin' here forever
Oh baby, baby this is not alright, let's stop this tonight
Baby, oh
Quit playin' games
Na na na na na na
Na na na na na baby
Na na na na na
Sometimes I wish I could turn back time,
Impossible as it may seem
But I wish I could so bad, baby

Quit playin' games with my heart

Lost In the nervous haze Finding Out myself
Severing the doubts from the aim Keeping the passion inflamed
Between the "easy way...of no choice"
Twisted in lies You haunt me ...you give me the cold Feeding up my ghosts...my evil spring...within...The cold
I live the chaos of my dreams and my regrets I burst in silence cunning demons, life prospects
Ripping my reason sustain Drawing a logical frame
Inside the "normal chain...of no choice"
Twisted in lies You haunt me ...you give me the cold Feeding up my ghosts...my evil spring...within...The cold
I ear your words...I get confused...They seem so right...Still I refuse So far I am... So close I've been...Should I forget? ...Or should I still dream...
I think and drift throughout this thoughts in every ways I ear the voice, the constant speech, the constant claim
Shouting for simple repay Proving that I can't delay
The usual "empty stage...of no choice"
Twisted in lies You haunt me ...you give me the cold Feeding up my ghosts...my evil spring...within...The cold
