Fan service

Fan service (ファンサービス, fan sābisu), fanservice, or service cut (サービスカット, sābisu katto), is material in a work of fiction or in a fictional series which is intentionally added to please the audience. The term originated in anime and manga fandom but has been used in other mediums. It is about "servicing" the fan– giving the fans "exactly what they want." Fan service usually refers to "gratuitous titillation", but can also refer to intertextual references to other series or story and visual elements that audiences tend to desire.

History

Direct and deliberate audience titillation is nearly as old as fiction itself. Examples which can be found in early works include meta-references, where the work or audience is referenced within the work itself, homage or parody where the work references another work familiar to the audience, asides where a character in a work directly speaks to the audience, cameos where characters or persons familiar to the audience outside the work (such as the author, a celebrity, or a character from another story) make an appearance in the work for the audience's sake, and other examples of breaking the fourth wall to directly engage the audience. An ancient example can be found in Aristophane's comedy The Frogs where two characters speak in the underworld:

Fan Service (Sweet)

"Fan Service [sweet]" (ファン・サーヴィス [sweet]) is Japanese pop group Perfume's ninth single. It was released on February 14, 2007.

Fan Service [sweet] was the group's first single for the year 2007. The release date coincided with Valentine's Day, a theme present in the song "Chocolate Disco". It was issued in special packaging containing a DVD with music videos and a 20-page booklet, and only a limited number of pressings were produced. However, both songs were included in the group's album GAME, released the next year.

"Chocolate Disco" has been referred to by young people as a "traditional Valentine's Day song".

N.EX.T

N.EX.T or N.Ex.T. (abbreviation for New EXperiment Team) was a South Korean rock band, although their music can also be categorized with as diverse styles as pop, funk, heavy metal, thrash metal, progressive metal, and electronic.

History

N.EX.T (New EXperiment Team) was the band of singer/song-writer Shin Hae Chul (신해철). The group split up following the 1997 release of Lazenca: A Space Rock Opera, and the instrumentalists formed the alternative metal band Novasonic with rapper Kim Jun Pyo. N.EX.T reformed around 2003 following the disbanding of Novasonic, and they released the soundtrack to Guilty Gear XX #Reload. A few of its instrumental songs were re-worked into songs with vocals on the following album, The Return Of N.EX.T Part 3: The Book of War/The Diary of a Soldier. The Return of N.EX.T Part 3 included the song "Dear America" which featured many prominent Korean vocalists such as Kim Jn Pyo and Crash's Ahn Heung-Chan. Guitarist Kim SeHwang released his first solo album, Vivaldi: The Four Seasons, on June 27, 2011.
