The death camp commander lives with his family near the crematorium, where REAL HELL unfolds.
The action of the film, partially based on real events, begins in 1943 on the picturesque bank of a river, where the commandant of the Auschwitz concentration camp, Rudolf Hess, is vacationing with his family. Rudolf's wife, Hedwig, aided by the camp inmates where her husband works, helps maintain beauty and order on the premises. Together with the engineers, Rudolf discusses the construction of a new crematorium designed to destroy four to five hundred bodies at a time.

How a Domestic Scene Creates Dread in ‘The Zone of Interest’ | Anatomy of a Scene
This sequence from “The Zone of Interest,” which is nominated for five Academy Awards, including best picture, observes a weekday at the home of Rudolf Höss, the commandant of the concentration camp Auschwitz. That home is positioned directly next door to the camp. In the kitchen, Rudolf’s wife, Hedwig, sits and gossips with friends. In another room, Rudolf meets with the engineers of a crematory. But the scene primarily follows Aniela, a young Polish girl who works in the home, preparing a glass of schnapps to celebrate the commandant’s birthday, and delivering boots to him during his meeting.
Discussing the scene, the film’s director, Jonathan Glazer, said that he chose to follow Aniela, rather than the main characters, “because it’s really one of the only times in the film where we can...

Rudolf Hess exhumed to deter neo-Nazi pilgrims
The remains of Rudolph Hess, Adolph Hitler's former deputy, have been exhumed from a grave in the small Bavarian town of Wunsiedal.
Officials removed the tomb and headstone in order to prevent hoards of neo-Nazi pilgrims descending on the small community. Every year on August 17 hundreds of Nazi sympathisers commemorate the death of Hess.
After being exhumed Hess' bones were taken to a crematorium, and his ashes scattered at sea. The action was taken after consultation with his remaining family.

The DISTURBING Exhumation Of Rudolf Hess
During the Second World War, Rudolf Hess was considered Hitler's number 2 and Deputy Fuhrer. However he would fall from grace shockingly and spectacularly after a flight to Scotland that was intended to bring peace talks to Britain. But Hess was a strange individual, and was one inside of Hitler's inner circle that attracted criticism from others such as Hermann Goring, but he was brought to trial and faced possible execution at the Nuremberg trials at the end of the war. But Hess was sentenced to life imprisonment, and he is considered the 'Last Nazi,' who was held inside of Spandau Prison where he died at the age of 93.
However after his death, he was exhumed from his grave a number of times. The local German authorities became concerned about Hess being venerated by Nazi groups, and he...

Discussing the scene, the film’s director, Jonathan Glazer, said that he chose to follow Aniela, rather than the main characters, “because it’s really one of the only times in the film where we can see and connect and spend time with, essentially, a victim of these atrocities.”
He explained that he chose to use multiple cameras to shoot the scene, and the film overall, because “I really didn’t want to have sort of the artificial construction of a conventional film to tell this story. Rather, to view them anthropologically, as if we were a fly on the wall.”
