A gelding is a castrated horse or other equine, such as a donkey or a mule. Castration, and the elimination of hormonally driven behavior associated with a stallion, allows a male horse to be calmer and better-behaved, making the animal quieter, gentler and potentially more suitable as an everyday working animal. As a verb, "gelding" or "to geld" refers to the castration procedure itself.
The word comes from the Old Norse geldr ("barren").
The Scythians are thought to have been the first people to geld their horses. They valued geldings as war horses because they were quiet, lacked mating urges, were less prone to call out to other horses, were easier to keep in groups, and were less likely to fight with one another.
A male horse is often gelded to make him better-behaved and easier to control. Gelding can also remove lower-quality animals from the gene pool. Ideally, horse breeders choose to leave only their best animals as stallions; lesser specimens are gelded, to improve the overall quality of the breed.

Gelding of a horse. Performed by a licensed vet at Texas A&M; University - Commerce.
Now 6 weeks after his gelding, I had put William and Camo in the meadow, but a short time after that, the farmer asked me wether Camo was properly gelded or not. So I asked why, and he told me Camo was mounting a mare... So I went back to the meadow and found out that that mare was in full heat, walking in the same meadow and having Camo's full biological reproductive attention. And despite his gelding, under the right conditions (mainly the outside temperature) , his remaining semen is quite likely to be still fertile at this moment...
http://www.thinklikeahorse.org/index.html I got a request to do a video about this. I discuss some differences between Mares and Geldings, pros and cons and why some prefer one over the other. I think it comes down to personal preference and past experience. Bottom line is A horse is a horse and they can all have positive and negative traits and behaviors and all horses can good or bad, depending on who owns them.
Horse breeding 101 - Trying to educate people on stupid horse myths that are passed on by people that don't know any better. A gelding horse is a horse that has had his berries removed from his twig and berries (male horse personal parts). Just like humans are get fixed, they still have sex they just do not make babies, if it is done right. Yet for some reason in the horsey myth land, lots of people think Geldings do not breed or mount and if they see this they think it is bad. This is BS. Geldings are still boys and mares are still girls. It is NORMAL for a male horse to mount a female horse. OMG Rick that can't be true? YES it is true. However if you go to Horseforum.com the idiots there will tell you more foolishness to pass on ignorance. I could not get the camera out fast enough but...
William (Haflinger stallion) playing with Festo for the first time. :)
Posted a video last summer about a lump on Festus' sheath. More than likely was a bite, kept an eye on it and it went away on its own. Now, it's the dead of winter, and he's got two lumps on either side. To be frank, it looks like he's a stud horse and his berries are on the wrong side of the sheath. He's not a stud horse, he's a gelding. So, I contacted the vet who said it was most likely an edema. They said geldings don't get as much blood flow to that area, especially in cold weather when they are not as active. They can get an edema in that low hanging area, also known as being "stocked up". Here are the vets recommendations: banamine (which will be a last resort), light hand massage to bring circulation to that area, cleaning the sheath (will do tomorrow), and exercise....
Juicioso has seen something and I check out what it is. He is a stallion, 7 y of age on this movie. Nature is always inside a Horse, some people want to take it away but thats like taking the water from the see. A Stallion has very specific behavior, he follows who he is and the age of 7 means that in his nature he would start to study mares. In the wild males can become herd stallion, at the age of 5-10 years, many times is seen that these stallions prepare themselves for a couple of weeks. The roam alone before they give a try to gain mares. Some people think that a gelding is not male anymore, castration only takes away most testosterone but does not make a Horse a mare. The character is still there and so is the being male. This is quite a misconception for many people, who someh...
