There have been two major oil spills in the Gulf of Mexico:
The Gulf of Mexico dead zone is deemed an oxygen-starved zone devoid of most marine life. It is located off the Louisiana coast where the Mississippi Rivers pours into the Gulf of Mexico.
ANN ARBOR, MICHIGAN — U.S. researchers forecast the annual summer hypoxia in the Gulf of Mexico to be roughly the same size as Connecticut. The hypoxic region, or known as “dead zone”, forms after the Mississippi River flows downstream from farmland across the central U.S. into the Gulf of Mexico during the spring and early summer. The water contains high levels of nitrogen and phosphorus which trigger the algae growth. Algae sink to the bottom when they die, where they decompose and consume the oxygen in the water. The nutrient-rich water stays on top of the Gulf water, blocking oxygen from getting into the bottom of the water unless stirred by a tropical storm or hurricane. The Mississippi River/Gulf of Mexico Watershed Nutrient Task Force tried to reduce the extent of Gul...

Hypoxic zones are areas in the ocean of such low oxygen concentration that animal life suffocates and dies, and as a result are sometimes called "dead zones." One of the largest dead zones forms in the Gulf of Mexico every spring. This data visualization discusses the causes of hypoxia in the Gulf of Mexico. This second volume in Gulf of Mexico Origin, Waters, and Biota (a multivolumed work edited by John W. Tunnell Jr., Darryl L. Felder, and Sylvia A. Earle) assesses the Gulf of Mexico as a single economic region. The book provides information and baseline data useful for assessing the goals of economic and environmental sustainability in the Gulf. In five chapters, economists, political scientists, and ecologists from Florida, California, Louisiana, Texas, Maine, and Mexico cover topics such as: the idea of the Gulf as a transnational co...

[Lyrics Emmylou Harris - Gulf Coast Highway] Gulf coast highway, he worked the rails He worked the rice fields with their cold dark wells He worked the oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico The only thing we've owned is this old house here by the road And when he dies he says he'll catch some blackbird's wing And we will fly away to heaven Come some sweet blue bonnet spring She walked through springtime when I was home The days were sweet, our nights were warm The seasons changed, the jobs would come The flowers fade, and this old house felt so alone When the work took me away And when she dies she says she'll catch some blackbird's wing And she will fly away to heaven Come some sweet blue bonnet spring Highway 90, the jobs are gone We kept our garden, we set the sun This is the only place on...

I live to work and work to live
Oh, but what I wouldn't give
For a ray of sun and a little piece of beach
Where the sand dollar is the only currency
I vote we go to the Gulf of Mexico, you and me by the sea
Palm trees call me, oh that's the place I want to be
Down where the southern breezes blow
On the Gulf of Mexico
Right at five o'clock today
I'll pick you up, we'll drive away
And I can't wait to feel the sand beneath my toes
And I can almost see the sunburn on your nose
I vote we go to the Gulf of Mexico, you and me by the sea
Palm trees call me, oh that's the place I want to be
Down where the southern breezes blow
On the Gulf of Mexico
Vamos we go
I vote we go to the Gulf of Mexico, you and me by the sea
Palm trees call me, oh that's the place I want to be
Down where the southern breezes blow
On the Gulf of Mexico
Tag down where the southern breezes blow
On the Gulf of Mexico
On the Gulf of Mexico
That's the place I want to be
Down where the southern breezes blow
