For five years, Leighton Meester played Blair Waldorf, the Upper East Side socialite Gossip Girl fans hated then loved. Fans rooted for Waldorf’s kinky but loving relationship with devious Chuck Bass and wondered how—seriously, how?—Blake Lively’s Serena had managed to land at the center of the show’s initial existence when—again, seriously—Blair was, like, so much better. Three years after Gossip Girl’s satisfying end, Meester is making a living in other fields. She did Broadway, playing Curley’s wife in the James Franco/Chris O’Dowd adaptation of Of Mice And Men. Along with 99 other actors and celebrities, she’s narrating part of Unity, Shaun Monson’s upcoming film about global connectivity. And, last October, Meester released her debut solo LP, Heartstrings. She stopped by the office earlier this year while on tour for that release to cover The Cardigans’ 1996 worldwide hit “Lovefool.”

For Throwback Thursday I put together the best Leighton and/or Ed clips from the 2008 Gossip Girl Paleyfest event. There are some great Blake, Chace and Penn moments in it too!
I think everyone has seen the moment where Leighton says Chuck understands Blair better than anyone else but there a few other cute things I'd never noticed before:
Ed seems very shy. I was surprised by HOW shy he comes across here. Blake is the anti-Ed in that she's hyper extroverted and bubbly. Chace is perpetually bemused by Ed, like he's his oddball friend. lol. Josh has a running joke where he says he can't understand Ed's accent but it seems like a good natured joke. Ed does a terrible job selling his band The Filthy Youth but Stephanie and Leighton both try to help him out ( Leighton mentions when TFY will be playing next in NY). At the very end Josh says some interesting things about Serena and Blair as flawed characters. You can tell the whole cast gets along really well. I know most of them aren't super close since the series ended but I bet they all have positive feelings for one another and for their time making the show. I don't get the impression any of them is a diva or troublemaker at all. They seem pretty mellow.

Leighton Marissa Meester (born April 9, 1986) is an American actress and singer. Meester first garnered attention and critical acclaim for playing Blair Waldorf in the CW's teen drama television series Gossip Girl. She most recently appeared in the 2010 country drama film Country Strong, the 2011 thriller The Roommate, and the 2011 romantic-comedy Monte Carlo.
Meester was born in Fort Worth, Texas, to Constance and Douglas Meester and lived most of her life in New York City and Los Angeles. Meester's last name is the Dutch word for "master" or "teacher".
At the time of her birth, her mother was serving time in a federal prison for her involvement in a drug ring that smuggled marijuana from Jamaica to the United States. She was able to give birth to Leighton in a hospital and nurse her for three months in a halfway house, before returning to prison to complete her sentence, after which Leighton's grandmother cared for her. She has a brother, Alexander, who is 8 years younger.
Meester has maintained that her parents gave her a normal upbringing and, despite their criminal past, are good people with experience that has only made Meester more open-minded and non-judgmental, "It made me realize that you can't judge anyone — especially your parents — for what they've done in their past, because people change." Meester has joked, "Look, I could've turned out a lot worse." She has cited her mother as her style icon.

Gossip Girl actress Leighton Meester recently reflected on her audition process to win the coveted role of Blair Waldorf over FIVE years ago, saying QUOTE: "I started auditioning back in December 2006. The process was really long. At the time, I wanted to move to New York, but I didn't have a reason or any money. So when my agent sent me the Gossip Girl script, I thought Blair was perfect for me.... Originally the script had my character suffering from an eating disorder," she added, "but they ended up taking it out." Now, while I wasn't able to track down Leighton's actual audition for the hit CW show, I was able to find a little gem from back in 2007 where she talks about herself AND her former co-star Taylor Momsen goofing off on set during season 1. Gossip Girl actress Leighton Meester recently reflected on her audition process to win the coveted role of Blair Waldorf over FIVE years ago, saying QUOTE: "I started auditioning back in December 2006. The process was really long. At the time, I wanted to move to New York, but I didn't have a reason or any money. So when my agent sent me the Gossip Girl script, I thought Blair was perfect for me.... For five years, Leighton Meester played Blair Waldorf, the Upper East Side socialite Gossip Girl fans hated then loved. Fans rooted for Waldorf’s kinky but loving relationship with devious Chuck Bass and wondered how—seriously, how?—Blake Lively’s Serena had managed to land at the center of the show’s initial existence when—again, seriously—Blair was, like, so much better. Three years after Gossip Girl’s satisfying end, Meester is making a living in other fields. She did Broadway, playing Curley’s wife in the James Franco/Chris O’Dowd adaptation of Of Mice And Men. Along with 99 other actors and celebrities, she’s narrating part of Unity, Shaun Monson’s upcoming film about global connectivity. And, last October, Meester released her debut solo LP, Heartstrings. She stopped by the office earlier this year while on tour for that release to cover The Cardigans’ 1996 worldwide hit “Lovefool.”

For Throwback Thursday I put together the best Leighton and/or Ed clips from the 2008 Gossip Girl Paleyfest event. There are some great Blake, Chace and Penn moments in it too!
I think everyone has seen the moment where Leighton says Chuck understands Blair better than anyone else but there a few other cute things I'd never noticed before:
Ed seems very shy. I was surprised by HOW shy he comes across here. Blake is the anti-Ed in that she's hyper extroverted and bubbly. Chace is perpetually bemused by Ed, like he's his oddball friend. lol. Josh has a running joke where he says he can't understand Ed's accent but it seems like a good natured joke. Ed does a terrible job selling his band The Filthy Youth but Stephanie and Leighton both try to help him out ( Leighton mentions when TFY will be playing next in NY). At the very end Josh says some interesting things about Serena and Blair as flawed characters. You can tell the whole cast gets along really well. I know most of them aren't super close since the series ended but I bet they all have positive feelings for one another and for their time making the show. I don't get the impression any of them is a diva or troublemaker at all. They seem pretty mellow.

Gossip Girl actress Leighton Meester recently reflected on her audition process to win the coveted role of Blair Waldorf over FIVE years ago, saying QUOTE: "I started auditioning back in December 2006. The process was really long. At the time, I wanted to move to New York, but I didn't have a reason or any money. So when my agent sent me the Gossip Girl script, I thought Blair was perfect for me.... Originally the script had my character suffering from an eating disorder," she added, "but they ended up taking it out."
Now, while I wasn't able to track down Leighton's actual audition for the hit CW show, I was able to find a little gem from back in 2007 where she talks about herself AND her former co-star Taylor Momsen goofing off on set during season 1.
