In 2014, Islamic State militants swept into Western Iraq's Anbar Province, overrunning Iraqi security forces, enslaving minorities, and causing thousands to flee for their lives.
The jihadist group captured Iraq’s largest city, Mosul, and the cities of Ramadi and Fallujah, where hundreds of US troops died fighting the Islamic State’s predecessor.
Now, two years later, the Iraqi security forces, with help from Iranian-supported Shiite militias and US military advisors and warplanes, are fighting to take back towns and cities in Anbar, one battle at a time.
But it’s a difficult task: Anbar has been the crucible of Iraq’s insurgency, and is the country’s Sunni heartland — long marginalized by and hostile to the Shiite-led government in Baghdad.
VICE News embedded with Iraq’s Golden Division Special Forces unit as they fought their way into the villages surrounding the city of Hit, where they encountered ambushes, sniper fire, and tried to sort suspected Islamic State operatives and sympathizers from innocent Iraqi civilians.

Latvians and Livs are the indigenous people of Latvia.Latvian is an Indo-European language; it and Lithuanian are the only two surviving Baltic languages. Despite foreign rule from the 13th to 20th centuries, the Latvian nation maintained its identity throughout the generations via the language and musical traditions. Latvia and Estonia share a long common history. As a consequence of the Soviet occupation, both countries are home to a large number of ethnic Russians (26.9% in Latvia and 25.5% in Estonia), some of whom are non-citizens. Latvia is historically predominantly Protestant Lutheran, except for the Latgale region in the southeast, which has historically been predominantly Roman Catholic.

In 2014, Islamic State militants swept into Western Iraq's Anbar Province, overrunning Iraqi security forces, enslaving minorities, and causing thousands to flee for their lives.
The jihadist group captured Iraq’s largest city, Mosul, and the cities of Ramadi and Fallujah, where hundreds of US troops died fighting the Islamic State’s predecessor.
Now, two years later, the Iraqi security forces, with help from Iranian-supported Shiite militias and US military advisors and warplanes, are fighting to take back towns and cities in Anbar, one battle at a time.
But it’s a difficult task: Anbar has been the crucible of Iraq’s insurgency, and is the country’s Sunni heartland — long marginalized by and hostile to the Shiite-led government in Baghdad.
VICE News embedded with Iraq’s Golden Division Special Forces unit as they fought their way into the villages surrounding the city of Hit, where they encountered ambushes, sniper fire, and tried to sort suspected Islamic State operatives and sympathizers from innocent Iraqi civilians.

Tested to the limits both physically and mentally, not all of them will make it through without quitting, but those that do, will become Latvia’s elite soldiers. 3. Jāņi & Līgo are the celebration of midsummer, Latvians celebrate by staying up and partying until sunrise the following day. The largely pagan celebration is one of the main days in any Latvians calendar.
4. Once every 5 years, Riga plays host to the Latvian Song and Dance festival, a massive spectacle that sees more than 50,000 participants performing over 3 days. On the final day 20,000 singers all take to the stage in Mežaparks and sing in unison, a truly spine tingling experience. Tickets for this event sell out fast, and people will queue for hours to secure their place.
5. As with the other Baltic states, Latvia has been ruled by all sorts of foreign powers, from Sweden to Germany to Russia, declaring independence after World War I (after seven centuries), but falling under Soviet, then Nazi, then Soviet rule until it once again declared independence in 1991.
6. The history of Riga, the capital of Latvia, in its 800 years of existence has been diverse. Believe it or not, Riga used to be the largest Swedish city and the industrial centre of the Russian Empire. The so-called Old Town of Riga is the city's historic and geographic centre, located on the right bank of the Daugava River. Only remnants of the fortification wall remain that enclosed the city from the 13th to 18th century. But the narrow streets of cobblestone, and a multitude of Medieval architectural wonders are still standing, first and foremost being the churches and their steeples – making for a solely unique skyline.
7. The Baltic Way, or Baltic Chain, was a peaceful demonstration across all three states: Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. It occurred on August 23rd, 1989, with approximately two million people forming a human chain, which stretched over 419 miles or 675 kilometers. These ‘protests’ were in memory of the 50th anniversary of unwanted occupation of the Baltic States by foreign powers, as a result of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact between the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany.

1. Latvia is the smallest nation to ever become a colonial power, as the Duchy of Courland set up a number of colonies in Tobago, Trinidad and Gambia in the 17th century.
2. A Latvian-Jewish tailor named Jākobs Jufess invented the jeans (Levi Strauss backed him financially).
3. Jāņi & Līgo are the celebration of midsummer, Latvians celebrate by staying up and partying until sunrise the following day. The largely pagan celebration is one of the main days in any Latvians calendar.
4. Once every 5 years, Riga plays host to the Latvian Song and Dance festival, a massive spectacle that sees more than 50,000 participants performing over 3 days. On the final day 20,000 singers all take to the stage in Mežaparks and sing in unison, a truly spine tingling experience. Tickets for this event sell out fast, and people will queue for hours to secure their place.
5. As with the other Baltic states, Latvia has been ruled by all sorts of foreign powers, from Sweden to Germany to Russia, declaring independence after World War I (after seven centuries), but falling under Soviet, then Nazi, then Soviet rule until it once again declared independence in 1991.
6. The history of Riga, the capital of Latvia, in its 800 years of existence has been diverse. Believe it or not, Riga used to be the largest Swedish city and the industrial centre of the Russian Empire. The so-called Old Town of Riga is the city's historic and geographic centre, located on the right bank of the Daugava River. Only remnants of the fortification wall remain that enclosed the city from the 13th to 18th century. But the narrow streets of cobblestone, and a multitude of Medieval architectural wonders are still standing, first and foremost being the churches and their steeples – making for a solely unique skyline.
7. The Baltic Way, or Baltic Chain, was a peaceful demonstration across all three states: Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. It occurred on August 23rd, 1989, with approximately two million people forming a human chain, which stretched over 419 miles or 675 kilometers. These ‘protests’ were in memory of the 50th anniversary of unwanted occupation of the Baltic States by foreign powers, as a result of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact between the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany.

Latvian amber was known in places as far away as Ancient Greece and the Roman Empire. In the 12th century, German traders arrived, bringing with them missionaries who attempted to convert the pagan Finno-Ugric and Baltic tribes to the Christian faith. The Germans founded Rīga in 1201, establishing it as the largest and most powerful city on the eastern coast of the Baltic Sea. After independence in 1918, Latvia achieved considerable results in social development, economy, industry and agriculture. It has always been a multicultural melting point, where foreigners and locals worked together and brought prosperity to the country. On June 16, 1940, Vyacheslav Molotov presented the Latvian representative in Moscow with an ultimatum accusing Latvia of violations of that pact, and on June 17 Soviet forces occupied the country. Elections for a "People's Saeima" were held, and a puppet government headed by Augusts Kirhenšteins led Latvia into the USSR. The annexation was formalized on August 5, 1940. During the time of the Iron Curtain, Latvia was a province of the Soviet Union, but the concentration of heavy industry was enormous. Contacts with the West were regulated. The Baltic region had the reputation of being the most urbanized and having the highest literacy rate in the Soviet Union. Latvia gained independence on September 6, 1991. Between 1991 and 2007 the country saw unprecedented economic growth. However, the global recession and the banking crisis hit Latvia brutally, and severe economic contraction and destructively high unemployment have returned.
Because of a tribal past and divisions between occupying nations, there are regional differences between parts of Latvia which are interesting to explore.

Both Democrats and Republicans supported the NATO pledge, said Biden, who made his remarks during an appearance with the leaders of all three Baltic states in Riga.
"There is continued overwhelming bipartisan commitment in the United States of America in both political parties to maintain our commitment to NATO," he said.
Trump is running against Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, who has also affirmed her commitment to NATO. Clinton is ahead in polls.
Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia, the three Baltic states which regained independence in the early 1990s a half century after being annexed by the Soviet Union, see themselves on the frontline of any potential conflict with Russia.
