A Philadelphia jury has awarded $45 million to a woman who was among four mentally disabled people held captive in a Tacony dungeon where they were starved and beaten.
The award, from a Common Pleas Court jury, was granted Thursday to Tamara Breeden, 33, who had been held captive for a decade by Linda Ann Weston.
She testified that from fall 2001 to October 2011, she was a captive of Weston, 55; Gregory Thomas Sr., 51; Eddie Wright, 53; and Jean McIntosh, 36.
Breeden was awarded $40 million in compensatory damages. She was also granted $5 million in punitive damages, including $3 million against Weston, and $1 million each from Thomas and Wright.
Breeden and the three others were rescued from the basement boiler room of an apartment house on Longshore Avenue in the city's Tacony section in October 2011.
She testified she was subjected to daily beatings, nearly starved, and did not have access to water, clothing, medicine, or doctors.
"She was terribly abused, she was prostituted, all so she could be controlled and Linda Ann Weston would get her Social Security benefits," said Breeden's lawyer, Steven Wigrizer.
Breeden was receiving the benefits because of her mental disability.
During her captivity, Breeden gave birth to two children, a boy and a girl, according to the civil complaint.
Weston and the other defendants started out living in Philadelphia, then moved to Killeen, Texas, to West Palm Beach, Fla., to Virginia Beach, Va., and back to Philadelphia, Wigrizer said. They moved around to avoid detection, he said.
The defendants, Wigrizer said, do not have any assets, but the point of the suit was to get what happened on the record.
Weston and the three others, who are in federal custody facing criminal charges, chose not to participate in the hearing before Judge Ramy I. Djerassi and did not retain counsel, Wigrizer said.

Most all of us cannot even begin to imagine what it would be like to be held captive for any length of time and denied our freedoms. But some have had to endure so much during captivity and survive the ordeal to tell about it. Here are 10 #stories of people who were held against their will and went through some terrible situations.
10. A 13-year-old Ohio girl was held captive for a year by her step-father and step-brother. She was shackled to a support beam in the basement and fed spoiled food and food scraps. She was forced to use the bathroom into a bucket that contained ammonia. One day, she discovered a key that released the shackles and she escaped. A good Samaritan found her and made a 911 call to police, who arrested the step-father, Timothy Ciboro, 53, and Esten Ciboro, 27.
9. For 4 years, 86-year-old veteran David McClellan, of #New York, who suffers from #dementia, was held captive in a Highlands, New York motel room receiving only one bowl of cereal each day. Authorities finally learned of his captivity and arrested Perry Goniglio, 35. Police said Goniglio would steal the man’s benefits and Social Security checks and often poke him with a stick when he tried to go outside the motel room door.
8.Because 16-year-old Amina Al-Jeffery was not living a complete Islamic lifestyle, her #father forced her to stay at his #Saudi Arabia home, shaving her head and giving her very little food and water for five years. She was also denied proper waste facilities, being forced to urinate in a cup. When it was discovered she was being held against her will, #lawyers took the case to the London high court to protect the girl. Mohammed Al-Jeffery, 62, held his daughter captive all this time for kissing a boy.
7. It was an extremely tough life in Lauren Kavanaugh’s early years. From the age of 3 to the age of 8, Lauren was stuffed into a closet, where she lived nearly the whole time. The only time her mother and step-father took her out was to rape and #torture her. They burned her with cigarettes and blared country music so their Dallas, #Texas, neighbors would not hear her screams. When the 8-year-old was finally found by police, she weighed 25 pounds, which is the normal weight for a 2-year-old.
6. She was born Feb. 17, 1988, and she was abducted 10 years later on March 2. Nathascha Maria Kampusch was held against her will by Wolfgang Priklopil in a #secret cellar under his garage. This cellar’s entrance was hidden behind a cupboard. Its door was made of concrete, reinforced with steel. Her captor beat her and raped her often. He would also starve her at times so she would be too weak to make any escape attempts. The small cellar held Natascha prisoner for more than 8 years until she managed to escape on Aug. 23, 2006.
5. When Beatrice Weston was 8 years old, her aunt, Linda Ann Weston, forced her into captivity and often locked her inside a closet. For 10 years, Beatrice was beaten with a baseball bat, #forced to drink her own urine and prostituted out. Police finally discovered Linda Weston was holding four mentally disabled adults in her small basement. When Beatrice was found, she had open wounds, burns and broken bones. Also, her ankles showed scars of where she had been shot with a pellet #gun.
4. For 13 years, Gina DeJesus, Michelle Knight and Amanda Berry were held captive by Ariel Castro in his Cleveland, Ohio home. Each woman was #kidnapped after accepting a ride from Castro. During their time in captivity, they were raped repeatedly and threatened with death. They were #locked in upstairs bedrooms and given only one meal a day. Castro impregnated Michelle at least five times. He would beat her to end the pregnancies. On May 6, 2013, Amanda managed to escape and alert police about the other two women. Castro was #arrested within hours and later sentenced to life plus 1,000 years in prison without any chance for parole. After serving a month of his sentence, Castro committed #suicide by hanging himself with bedsheets.
3. Jaycee Dugard was 11 years old when she was kidnapped while walking home from her bus stop. Phillip Garrido raped her repeatedly and got her #pregnant twice. She gave birth to two daughters. For 18 years, Jaycee lived in Garrido’s backyard shack. In August of 2009, she #escaped, and soon after, Garrido and his wife, Nancy, were arrested. Garrido was #sentenced to 431 years to life in prison. His #wife got 36 years to life.

Anne Lamott
Anne Lamott (born April 10, 1954) is an American novelist and non-fiction writer.
She is also a progressive political activist, public speaker, and writing teacher. Based in the San Francisco Bay Area, her nonfiction works are largely autobiographical. Marked by their self-deprecating humor and openness, Lamott's writings cover such subjects as alcoholism, single-motherhood, depression, and Christianity.
Life and career
Lamott was born in San Francisco, and is a graduate of Drew School. She was a student at Goucher College for two years where she wrote for the newspaper. Her father, Kenneth Lamott, was also a writer. Her first published novel Hard Laughter was written for him after his diagnosis of brain cancer. She has one son, Sam, who was born in August 1989 and a grandson, Jax, born in July 2009.
Lamott's life was documented in Freida Lee Mock's 1999 documentary Bird by Bird with Annie: A Film Portrait of Writer Anne Lamott. Because of the documentary and her following on Facebook and other online networks, she is often called the "People's Author".

The award, from a Common Pleas Court jury, was granted Thursday to Tamara Breeden, 33, who had been held captive for a decade by Linda Ann Weston.
She testified that from fall 2001 to October 2011, she was a captive of Weston, 55; Gregory Thomas Sr., 51; Eddie Wright, 53; and Jean McIntosh, 36.
Breeden was awarded $40 million in compensatory damages. She was also granted $5 million in punitive damages, including $3 million against Weston, and $1 million each from Thomas and Wright.
Breeden and the three others were rescued from the basement boiler room of an apartment house on Longshore Avenue in the city's Tacony section in October 2011.
She testified she was subjected to daily beatings, nearly starved, and did not have access to water, clothing, medicine, or doctors.
"She was terribly abused, she was prostituted, all so she could be controlled and Linda Ann Weston would get her Social Security benefits," said Breeden's lawyer, Steven Wigrizer.
Breeden was receiving the benefits because of her mental disability.
During her captivity, Breeden gave birth to two children, a boy and a girl, according to the civil complaint.
Weston and the other defendants started out living in Philadelphia, then moved to Killeen, Texas, to West Palm Beach, Fla., to Virginia Beach, Va., and back to Philadelphia, Wigrizer said. They moved around to avoid detection, he said.
The defendants, Wigrizer said, do not have any assets, but the point of the suit was to get what happened on the record.
Weston and the three others, who are in federal custody facing criminal charges, chose not to participate in the hearing before Judge Ramy I. Djerassi and did not retain counsel, Wigrizer said.

Authorities finally learned of his captivity and arrested Perry Goniglio, 35. Police said Goniglio would steal the man’s benefits and Social Security checks and often poke him with a stick when he tried to go outside the motel room door.
8.Because 16-year-old Amina Al-Jeffery was not living a complete Islamic lifestyle, her #father forced her to stay at his #Saudi Arabia home, shaving her head and giving her very little food and water for five years. She was also denied proper waste facilities, being forced to urinate in a cup. When it was discovered she was being held against her will, #lawyers took the case to the London high court to protect the girl. Mohammed Al-Jeffery, 62, held his daughter captive all this time for kissing a boy.
7. It was an extremely tough life in Lauren Kavanaugh’s early years. From the age of 3 to the age of 8, Lauren was stuffed into a closet, where she lived nearly the whole time. The only time her mother and step-father took her out was to rape and #torture her. They burned her with cigarettes and blared country music so their Dallas, #Texas, neighbors would not hear her screams. When the 8-year-old was finally found by police, she weighed 25 pounds, which is the normal weight for a 2-year-old.
6. She was born Feb. 17, 1988, and she was abducted 10 years later on March 2. Nathascha Maria Kampusch was held against her will by Wolfgang Priklopil in a #secret cellar under his garage. This cellar’s entrance was hidden behind a cupboard. Its door was made of concrete, reinforced with steel. Her captor beat her and raped her often. He would also starve her at times so she would be too weak to make any escape attempts. The small cellar held Natascha prisoner for more than 8 years until she managed to escape on Aug. 23, 2006.
5. When Beatrice Weston was 8 years old, her aunt, Linda Ann Weston, forced her into captivity and often locked her inside a closet. For 10 years, Beatrice was beaten with a baseball bat, #forced to drink her own urine and prostituted out. Police finally discovered Linda Weston was holding four mentally disabled adults in her small basement. When Beatrice was found, she had open wounds, burns and broken bones. Also, her ankles showed scars of where she had been shot with a pellet #gun.
4. For 13 years, Gina DeJesus, Michelle Knight and Amanda Berry were held captive by Ariel Castro in his Cleveland, Ohio home. Each woman was #kidnapped after accepting a ride from Castro. During their time in captivity, they were raped repeatedly and threatened with death. They were #locked in upstairs bedrooms and given only one meal a day. Castro impregnated Michelle at least five times. He would beat her to end the pregnancies. On May 6, 2013, Amanda managed to escape and alert police about the other two women. Castro was #arrested within hours and later sentenced to life plus 1,000 years in prison without any chance for parole. After serving a month of his sentence, Castro committed #suicide by hanging himself with bedsheets.
3. Jaycee Dugard was 11 years old when she was kidnapped while walking home from her bus stop. Phillip Garrido raped her repeatedly and got her #pregnant twice. She gave birth to two daughters. For 18 years, Jaycee lived in Garrido’s backyard shack. In August of 2009, she #escaped, and soon after, Garrido and his wife, Nancy, were arrested. Garrido was #sentenced to 431 years to life in prison. His #wife got 36 years to life.
