US Navy Lt Cmdr Edward Lin Accused of Spying, Giving Secrets to China via Girlfriend; Is From Taiwan
United States Navy Lieutenant Commander Edward Lin has been accused of espionage, spying, solicitation of prostitution and adultery in a case in which the central focus is his potential revealing of secrets to
Taiwan and/or
China. He is currently being held in the brig in
Chesapeake, Virginia until further action is taken by the
US Navy.
As of right now, the charges he's facing may include the death penalty - for the most serious charge of espionage.
Edward Lin's situation began with a girlfriend that is either from Taiwan or
Mainland China (Taiwan is mostly governed by Mainland China and is known officially as "
Republic of China.") The girlfriend in question is alleged to have gained access to secret information - just one step below "top secret" - about a US Navy spy plane.
It's not clear at the moment if the secrets include any schematic diagrams of the plane that could be used for replication purposes, or if they include anything about the route the plane flies, or the secrets would reveal weaknesses in the electronic backend that could be exploited.
The incident with Mr. Lin and the potential spying for China comes at a time when there are questions about nationality in the
United States military and public sector service.
Rafael Edward Cruz, also known as
Ted Cruz, is under such a microscope
...to a certain extent.
Having being born in
Canada to an
American mother and Cuban national father, then living there for five years after his birth, makes people question not only his true citizenship, but also his loyalty to the
United States and his eligibility to run for
United States President. Should people born in foreign nations and/or those with dual citizenship be allowed to become members of the military or public sector service? The Edward Lin case if nothing else, may simply serve as a cautionary tale and a precedent for future action upon the aforementioned question.
