Major Summerford Known as the "World's Unluckiest Man," Major Walter Summerford, was a British officer during WWI. During a battle, he was knocked off his horse by a flash of lightning and paralyzed from the waist down. He slowly recovered and eventually retired and moved to Vancouver. In 1924, as he was fishing by a river, lightning hit the tree he was sitting under and paralyzed his right side. 6 years later he once again managed to recover from the ordeal, and was going for a slow walk in the park when once again, he was struck by lightning. He must have been like, really??!! This time he was completely paralyzed and died two years later. But I guess Zeus or Thor or whoever wasn't done with him yet, and 4 years later lightning struck a cemetery and damaged the gravestone of, you guessed it, Major Summerford. 11. Karma is a... you know what... (Header= karma is a B****) This story is pretty sad. A young woman commits suicide after a failed relationship with Henry Ziegland. Her brother vowed revenge against Henry, the man who had broken her heart and shot him. Thinking that he had killed him, the brother then turned the gun on himself and took his own life. However, the bullet had only grazed Henry's face and lodged in a nearby tree. Years later, Henry was clearing that very land and decided to chop down the tree. Since he was having some difficulty he used dynamite sticks to blow it up instead. That sounds like a great idea. And that’s where his luck ran out – the explosion from the dynamite propelled the bullet into his head and killed him. 10. Thomas Jefferson and John Adams Former Presidents Thomas Jefferson and John Adams both died on July 4, 1826, on the 50th anniversary of American independence. They were the last surviving members of the original American revolutionaries who had stood up to the British empire and forged a new political system in the former colonies. Jefferson and Adams had worked together to draft the Declaration of Independence, and also spent time together as diplomats for the new United States in Europe. They then became adversaries when Jefferson succeeded Adams as president in 1801 after a bitter and slanderous election. On opposite sides of the Republican and Federalist divide, the two men remained estranged until 1812, when Adams sent Jefferson a New Year’s greeting. The mortal enemies soon became friends again and their reconciliation led to a remarkable correspondence that lasted for nearly 15 years. On July 4, 1826, as the country celebrated 50 years since declaring its independence, at the age of 90, Adams lay on his deathbed. His last words were “Thomas Jefferson survives.” He was sadly mistaken: Jefferson had died five hours earlier at Monticello at the age of 82. Another curious coincidence is that in 1831, President James Monroe became the 3rd of the first 5 US presidents to die on Independence Day. What do you think? 9. “Miss Unsinkable” Violet Jessop was an ocean liner stewardess and nurse who is known for surviving the disastrous shipwrecks of the Olympic, Titanic, and Britannic. In 1910, Violet started working as a stewardess for the White Star Line, the creators of the Olympic, the Titanic, and the Britannic (which is a coincidence in and of itself, that these 3 ships were all owned by the same company). Bad luck? The Olympic was the largest civilian luxury ship at that time. Violet was on board in September 1911, when the Olympic collided with the British warship, The HMS Hawke. Apparently the suction from the Olympic had pulled the Hawke directly into the ocean liner. There were no fatalities and despite damage, the ship was able to make it back to port without sinking. She then became a stewardess on the Titanic just in time for the “unsinkable” ship’s maiden voyage in April 1912, when it sailed out of Southampton en route to New York City. The Titanic, as you know, struck an iceberg and sank just 2 hours later. 1500 people were lost. Violet helped other women and children into lifeboats before climbing into one herself. The third White Star ship, the Britannic, was used as a hospital ship during World War I. Violet was a nurse in the British Red Cross by then and was serving aboard the Britannic in November 1916, when the ship struck a mine planted by a German U-boat in the Aegean Sea. 30 people died in the explosion and the Britannic sank in less than an hour. More than 1,000 others were actually saved—including “Miss Unsinkable”.
