Secretariat (administrative office)

The secretariat of an organization is the department that fulfils its central administrative or general secretary duties. The term is especially associated with governments and intergovernmental organizations such as the United Nations, although some non-governmental organizations (for example, the International Organization for Standardization) also refer to their administrative department as their secretariat. The building or office complex that houses such a department may also be referred to as its secretariat or secretariat building.

In some cases, the secretariat is not a bureaucratic organ, but one which includes a certain organization run by all its members who collectively help to organize the larger group, such as the secretariat of the International of Anarchist Federations, which is an office that rotates irregularly between its member Federations.

The Central Secretariat or simply the Secretariat was one department in the Three Departments and Six Ministries structure in the history of China.

Secretariat (horse)

Secretariat (March 30, 1970 – October 4, 1989) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse that, in 1973, became the first U.S. Triple Crown winner in 25 years. He set race records in all three events in the series – the Kentucky Derby (1:59²⁄₅), the Preakness Stakes (1:53), and the Belmont Stakes (2:24) – records that still stand today. He is considered to be one of the greatest Thoroughbreds of all time. In 1999, ESPN ranked Secretariat the 35th-best North American athlete of the 20th century, the highest-ranking racehorse on the list. Secretariat ranked second behind Man o' War in The Blood-Horse's List of the Top 100 U.S. Racehorses of the 20th Century. He was also ranked second behind Man o' War by a six-member panel of experts assembled by the Associated Press. He was also ranked second behind Man o' War by a Sports Illustrated panel of seven experts.

Secretariat was sired by Bold Ruler out of Somethingroyal, by Princequillo. He was foaled at The Meadow in Caroline County, Virginia. Like his famous predecessor Man o' War, Secretariat was a large chestnut colt, and was given the same nickname, "Big Red". Secretariat's grandsire, Nasrullah, is also the great-great-grandsire of 1977 Triple Crown winner Seattle Slew.

Finch (TTC)

Finch is the northern terminus subway station of the Yonge Street section of Line 1 Yonge–University in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It is located under Yonge Street north of Finch Avenue.

Finch is the busiest TTC bus terminal and the sixth-busiest subway station, serving around 97,460 people per day. The station connects with other transit agencies at the adjoining Finch Bus Terminal.

History

The station was opened on March 29, 1974, in what was then the Borough of North York, by provincial premier Bill Davis and borough mayor Mel Lastman. It replaced York Mills as the northern terminus of the line. Homes which once fronted the station along Yonge Street were demolished. Finch was created using the cut-and-cover technique as a way to save money.

In 1999, this station became accessible with elevators.

In April 2006, work began on creating a new exit from the bus station on the western stub of Pemberton Avenue. This new exit was created because of the congestion that was created during the rush hour periods. Not only did the congestion affect customers entering or leaving the station, it also caused long delays for cars around Bishop Avenue. In the morning rush hour, buses took an average of 1 minute and 58 seconds to travel the 40 metres from the station to Yonge Street, with some waiting up to 4 minutes. The new exit was completed in January 2007.

Finch (Kent cricketer)

Finch (first name and dates unknown) was an English first-class cricketer who was active in the 1780s. He played for Kent and was recorded playing for Kent against Hampshire at Windmill Down in July 1786, scoring 0 and 2.
