France: Paris attacks suspect Salah Abdeslam extradited from Belgium - lawyer confirms
One of the key suspects in November’s Paris attacks, Salah Abdeslam, arrived in Paris after being extradited from Belgium, his lawyer Frank Berton confirmed on Wednesday.
SOT, Frank Berton, Salah Abdeslam's lawyer (French): "He arrived by helicopter, they removed him very quickly, there was a very large and close protection, he did not complain, he is not someone who complains, obviously the transfers between Belgium and France were very fast and with few special transport conditions."
SOT, Frank Berton, Salah Abdeslam's lawyer (French):"The charges are murder in connection with a terrorist enterprise, conspiracy, attempted murder in connection with a terrorist organization, use and possession of weapons, the purchase and manufacture of explosives. Also the facts of sequestration on the Bataclan for which he was indicted."
SOT, Frank Berton, Salah Abdeslam's lawyer (French): “I really thought a lot before agreeing to defend him [Abdeslam]. I met Mr. Abdeslam in prison, and we have established a line of defence. It is this which leads him to say to the magistrate, ‘I will give explanations later,’ and I think it's important that we know he wants his actions to be explained. There is no interest in defending someone who is still silent, and the trial wouldn’t be more interesting [in that case]. So today we are at the very beginning of the investigation. This is his first appearance. The charges were levelled against him. He is detained. A copy of the file was handed to me, let's get at it and we will be heard by the judges. For the rest, I have no other statements to make.”
