There have been several variants of the BGM-109 Tomahawk employing various types of warheads. The operational versions include the unitary conventional land attack TLAM-C, the bomblet-dispensing land attack TLAM-D, the nuclear land attack TLAM-A and TLAM-N, and the Tomahawk Anti-Ship Missile (TASM). Ground Launch Cruise Missiles (GLCM) and their truck-like launch vehicles were destroyed to comply with the 1987 Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty.
The Block III TLAMs that entered service in 1993 can fly farther and use Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers to strike more precisely. Block IV TLAMs have a better Digital Scene Matching Area Correlator (DSMAC) system as well as improved turbojet engines. The WR-402 engine provided the new BLK III with a throttle control, allowing in-flight speed changes. This engine also provided better fuel economy. The Block IV Phase II TLAMs have better deep-strike capabilities and are equipped with a real-time targeting system for striking moving targets.

Description
The Tomahawk missile family consists of a number of subsonic, jet engine-powered missiles designed to attack a variety of surface targets. Although a number of launch platforms have been deployed or envisaged, only sea (both surface ship and submarine) launched variants are currently in service. Tomahawk has a modular design, allowing a wide variety of warhead, guidance, and range capabilities.

Cruise missile
A cruise missile is a guided missile used against terrestrial targets, so called because the major portion of its flight path is conducted at cruise speed (i.e., approximately constant velocity). Cruise missiles are designed to deliver a large warhead over long distances with high accuracy (i.e. small circular error probability). The dynamics of cruise are a result of aerodynamic lift (force), and the equality of the thrust or propulsion forces against aerodynamic drag and as a result there is no acceleration. Modern cruise missiles are capable of travelling at supersonic or high subsonic speeds, are self-navigating, and are able to fly on a non-ballistic, extremely low-altitude trajectory. They are distinct from unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) in several ways: the cruise missile is a single use weapon which is always sacrificed in the mission; it is not intended to provide aerial reconnaissance; and the warhead is integrated directly into the hull of the vehicle and cannot be separated.

The Shaheen-III, which at a range of 2,750 km is Pakistan's longest-range missile to date, was tested for the first time in 2015. The Shaheen-III can reach Indian-controlled islands in the Bay of Bengal, in addition to all of mainland India. Pakistan continues to test other land-based missiles, such as the Shaheen-II, Ghaznavi, and Babur.
Besides land-based systems, Pakistan is also developing a nuclear-capable air launched cruise missile, the Ra'ad, and is in the early stages of developing a sea-based deterrent.
The National Development Complex is the main organization overseeing work on missiles, with a number of other entities involved as well. Pakistan appears to have made great strides in its ability to develop and produce missiles domestically. However, it remains reliant to a considerable extent on foreign sources for related equipment and materials.
Pakistan claims to have developed the Babur in response to alleged reports that India was planning to acquire Patriot missiles from the US, in order to set up a ballistic missile defense system to counter Pakistan's arsenal of ballistic missiles
Features:
The missile is stated to have a high degree of maneuverability, allowing it to "hug" the terrain, and "near-stealth" capabilities.[7] Terrain hugging ability helps the missile avoid enemy radar detection by utilizing "terrain masking", giving Babur the capability to penetrate enemy air defence systems undetected and survive until reaching the target.[2] The missile's design features can be compared with the American BGM-109 Tomahawk cruise missile.[5]
More advanced versions of the Babur are under development. Later versions are planned to have a range of 1000 km[5][8] and be capable of being launched from Pakistan Navy submarines such as the Agosta 90B Khalid class.

On August 12, 2005, Pakistan publicly announced that it had successfully test fired a nuclear-capable cruise missile with a range of 500 km.[11] The missile was launched from a land based transporter erector launcher (TEL).[6][12] The unannounced launch on 11 August 2005 caught much of the international community by surprise due to the technically advanced nature of the missile, as well as the fact that Pakistan did not notify India of its test-firing as the existing notification agreement is limited to ballistic missile testing only.
On March 22, 2007, Pakistan test-fired an upgraded version of the Babur with an extended range of 700 km.[4] Pakistan carried out two more tests of Babur on July 26, 2007 and December 11, 2007.[citation needed]
On May 6, 2009, Pakistan conducted another test-firing but did not announce the event until 9 May 2009, citing political reasons.[13][14]
On October 28, 2011. Pakistan successfully test fire its Babur Cruise missile and has a range of 700 kilometer. The ISPR said Babur was capable of carrying conventional and atomic warheads. A special feature of this launch was the validation of a new multi tube Missile Launch Vehicle (MLV) during the test. The three tube MLV enhances manifold the targeting and deployment options in the conventional and nuclear modes. With its shoot-and-scoot capability, the MLV provides a major force multiplier effect for target employment and survivability.[15]
On June 6, 2012 Pakistan conducted a successful test-fire of the multi-tube, indigenously developed Cruise Missile Hatf-VII (Babur), which can carry both nuclear and conventional warheads with stealth capabilities. It was the third test-fire conducted by Pakistan in the recent past, of different capacity and load. “It can carry both nuclear and conventional warheads and has stealth capabilities,” said an official announcement of the ISPR. “It also incorporates the most modern cruise missile technology of Terrain Contour Matching (Tercom) and Digital Scene Matching and Area Co-relation (DSMAC), which enhances its precision and effectiveness manifolds.”[16]

- crew life support vehicle for the personnel on the combat alert at the launch site;
- training aids: missile's training mock-up, equipment sets for TEL and CPV training classrooms, set of instructional charts.
The missile system ensures combat operation with the launch site and target at an altitude of up to 3,000 m above sea level, the TEL taking either an open position or being positioned in an emplacement without survey and weather support and without engineering organization of the launch site.
High precision at a significant range, short readiness time (between 4 and 16 minutes depending on the system readiness state), powerful combat payload and high probability of ATMB penetration ensure that the system is capable to quickly defeat any target type by launching one missile or two in salvo.

- Iskander-M – 9M723 version for Russian armed forces. Range: 500 km, making it a missile subject to the INF Treaty. The 9K720 "Iskander" (NATO reporting name SS-26 Stone) is a mobile short-range missile system produced and deployed by the Russian Federation. The Iskander is a high-precision missile system is intended for concealed preparation for and delivery of effective missile attacks on priority small-size and area targets in the operational depth of enemy formations.
Major features of missile system:
- high-precision and effective destruction of various target types with penetration of ATBM defence;
- concealed launch preparation, combat alert and effective delivery of missile attacks;
- automatic calculation and entry of missile flight data through launcher equipment;
- high probability of the missile's failure-free operation during prelaunch activities and in flight;
- high tactical manoeuvrability due to cross-country capability of combat vehicles based on all-wheel drive chassis;
- strategic mobility due to transportability of system vehicles by all means of transportation;
- automated combat control of missile units, quick processing of intelligence data and its forwarding to appropriate control authorities.
The Iskander missile system provides for accomplishment of combat missions in all modes of army combats, in various theartres of war, round the clock, in ATBM and electronic war environment.
Functionally, the system can be devided in:
- combat equipment: missiles, transporters-erectors-launchers (TEL), transloaders;
- battlefield management and information systems integrated in the command post vehicle (CPV);
- maintenance and repair facilities: scheduled maintenance vehicle and depot equipment set;
- crew life support vehicle for the personnel on the combat alert at the launch site;
- training aids: missile's training mock-up, equipment sets for TEL and CPV training classrooms, set of instructional charts.
The missile system ensures combat operation with the launch site and target at an altitude of up to 3,000 m above sea level, the TEL taking either an open position or being positioned in an emplacement without survey and weather support and without engineering organization of the launch site.
High precision at a significant range, short readiness time (between 4 and 16 minutes depending on the system readiness state), powerful combat payload and high probability of ATMB penetration ensure that the system is capable to quickly defeat any target type by launching one missile or two in salvo.
Variants
- Iskander-M – 9M723 version for Russian armed forces. Range: 500 km, making it a missile subject to the INF Treaty. A Russian national defense magazine, Natsionalnaya Oborona, says that Russian scientists are nearing the end of flight testing of their newest cruise missile, the KH-32.
The Russians claim the new KH-32 is virtually invulnerable to interception because it flies at an unheard of speed of 3355 mph, or Mach 4.4. It also flies high, up to a height of 130,000 feet, powered by a combination of an initial solid-fuel rocket motor, followed by a scramjet.
At this altitude, there are no adversary fighters or missiles. The KH-32 can fly up to 620 miles before diving towards its target and place an 1100-pound warhead with an accuracy of a few meters.
The KH-32 is also said to be guided by an inertial navigation system that is not affected by electronic warfare.
Russian military watchers say the new weapon will be perfect for attacking carrier strike groups.
According to Russia Beyond The Headlines or RBTH, no Russian or foreign missile defense system today can detect an incoming KH-32.
“Air and missile defense systems today cannot detect a diving warhead, which moves down at a speed of over 5,400 km/h."
Russian military experts contacted by RBTH say the new weapon will not be put into operational use and will only be used as a deterrent.
From this reporter’s experience, since there are abundant photos of the new weapon in circulation, the defense industry has been tracking the development of KH-32 for some time, and you can be sure that U.S. military technologists are developing some sort of effective counter-weapon.

On March 4, Navy spokeswoman Lieutenant Caroline Hutcheson publicly confirmed that the Navy had made substantial reductions in the number of Tomahawks it planned to purchase.
In FY 2014, the Navy bought 196 Tomahawks, but in its proposed budget for FY 2015, the Navy plans to buy only 100 missiles and none thereafter. Instead, it will shift investment to a next-generation system and, beginning in FY 2019, will establish a recertification program for its stockpile of approximately 4,000 missiles.
In a March 27 hearing, Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus argued that “the supply of Tomahawks that we have today that have been manufactured are sufficient … [to] carry us through any eventuality that we can foresee.” Senator John McCain (R–AZ) expressed surprise at the decision, describing it as “really rolling the dice … when we haven’t even begun the assessment of what that new weapon would look like.
