Just by listening deeply we already alleviate so much pain and suffering in the world. We invoke your name, Manjushri. We aspire to learn your way of being still and looking deeply into the heart of things and into the hearts of people. We will look with all our attention and open heartedness. We will look with unprejudiced eyes. We will look without judging or reacting. We will look so deeply that we can see and understand the roots of suffering, the impermanent and selfless nature of all that is. We will learn your way of using the sword of understanding to cut through the bonds of suffering and free ourselves and all species. We invoke your name, Samantabhadra. We aspire to learn your way of acting with the eyes and heart of compassion, bringing joy to one person in the morning and easing the pain of one person in the afternoon. Knowing that the happiness of others is our own happiness, we aspire to touch joy on our path of service. With every word, look, and action, we can bring happiness to others and become an inexhaustible source of peace and joy for our loved ones and for all beings. We invoke your name, Kshitigarbha. We aspire to learn your way of being present where there is darkness, suffering, and despair, so we can bring light, hope and relief to those places. We will not abandon those in desperate situations and will reach out to those whose cries for help, justice, and human rights are not being heard. We will do our best not to contribute to creating more hells on Earth, and to help transform the hells that already exist. We vow to cultivate the qualities of perseverance and stability, so that we can always be there for those in need. We invoke your name Sadaparibhuta. We aspire to learn your way of always respecting and never demeaning or underestimating others. We will look with the eyes of non-discrimination to appreciate the qualities and goodness in others, saying to them “You are enough. You are someone of great value.” We vow to see that other peoples’ joy and success is also our own joy and success. Actively watering the good seeds in ourselves and others, we can encourage confidence and self-acceptance, and see that we are all wonders of the universe. A Few Words About The Track: Invocation is a track that arose out of the collective dreams and prayers of our community for peace and healing, in a world that is so torn by conflict and violence. Our Teacher (Thich Nhat Hanh) wrote the spoken word element of the track, as a text to help us connect with the energy of the bodhisattvas (awakened beings). For him, the bodhisattvas are not to be thought of as deities or supernatural beings, but as archetypes—representations of the qualities that each of us has available to us as human beings. These qualities may be more or less developed, but we all have them—they are innate. These are the qualities of great compassion (Avalokiteshvara), great wisdom (Manjushri), great service (Samantabhadra), great endurance and fearlessness (Kshitigarbha), and of great inclusiveness—never disparaging anyone and always seeing the goodness in everyone— (Sadaparibhuta).
