Kárahnjúkar Hydropower Plant (Icelandic Kárahnjúkavirkjun) is a hydroelectric power plant in Fljótsdalshérað municipality in eastern Iceland designed to produce 4,600 gigawatt-hours (17,000 TJ) annually for Alcoa's Fjardaál aluminum smelter 75 kilometres (47 mi) to the east in Reyðarfjörður. With the installed capacity of 690 megawatts (930,000 hp), the plant is the largest hydroelectric power plant in Iceland. The project, named after nearby Mount Kárahnjúkur, involves damming the Jökulsá á Dal river and the Jökulsá í Fljótsdal river with five dams, creating three reservoirs. Water from the reservoirs is then diverted through 73 kilometres (45 mi) of underground water tunnels and down a 420-metre (1,380 ft) vertical penstock towards a single underground power station. The smelter became f...

Extreme Engineering - Hong Kong's Cable Car Documentary Extreme Engineering was a documentary television series that aired on the Discovery Channel and the Science Channel. The program featured futuristic and ongoing engineering projects. The series' last season aired in July 2011. Danny Forster first hosted the series in season 4 and has been the host since season 6. Origins of the show: Engineering the Impossible was a 2-hour special, created and written by Alan Lindgren and produced by Powderhouse Productions for the Discovery Channel. It focused on three incredible, yet physically possible, engineering projects: the nine mile (14 km)-long Gibraltar Bridge, the 170-story Millennium Tower and the 4000+-foot-long Freedom Ship. This program won the Beijing International Science Film Fest...

Widening the Panama Canal – Extreme Engineering The size of ships that can transit the canal, dubbed Panamax, is conscribed largely by the locks, which require ships to be less than 110 ft (33.53 m) wide and 1,050 ft (320.04 m) long, and have a draft of less than 41.2 ft (12.56 m) deep. All of the canal-widening studies since the 1930s have determined that the best way to increase canal capacity and allow the Panamanian maritime route to continue to grow is by building a third set of locks larger than the 1914 locks. (The U.S. began excavations for new locks in 1939, but abandoned them in 1942 because of World War II.[1]) This conclusion was again reached in the 1980s by the tripartite commission formed by Panama, Japan, and the United States. More recently, the studies developed by the ...

Pagani says that the C9 Huayra was named after Aymara Huayra Tata, god of wind, and although the name seems impossible to pronounce at first glance, it just may be the most fitting name possible for a car dedicated so thoroughly to taming and conquering the wind. There is no questioning the fact that Pagani's choice of styling is far from conventional, and to some off-putting, but there is also no question that the C9 is a purpose-built speed machine that aims to cut through the wind as quickly and efficiently as possible, even if that means it must boast a funny nose while doing so all the way up to 230 miles per hour.
