As a co-founder of the Dogme 95 movement, Thomas Vinterberg helped draft the revolutionary manifesto's rule #9, which states that the director must not be mentioned in the credits. The Danish filmmaker has since continued to awe audiences with his stories about the often harmonious, but also fraught relationship of the individual to the community. Vinterberg grew up in a hippy commune in 1970s Copenhagen, an experience that informs not only the story and milieu portrayed in his newest film The Commune in Competition, but also his ways of interacting with his cast and crew on film sets. Vinterberg focuses on the powers and complexities of collective working in his universe, from his youth through Dogme and in his latest work.

The co-creator of the Dogma95 manifesto and academy award nominee, Thomas Vinterberg (born 1969), has won international recognition for his work on films like THE CELEBRATION and THE HUNT including European Film Awards and prizes in Cannes. Vinterberg is taking part in this year’s competition at the Berlinale with THE COMMUNE.
Thomas Oberender
Director of Berliner Festspiele, a cultural organization overseeing festivals, exhibitions, programme series and individual events for music, theatre, performance and art in Berlin. Before that he was the chief dramatic advisor and artistic director at Schauspielhaus Bochum from 2000 to 2005, chief dramatic advisor and co-director at Schauspielhaus Zürich in 05/06 and Head of Drama at the Salzburg Festival from 2006 to 2011. He has written and translated several plays, realized art projects for Expo 2000, the Ruhrtriennale art festival, the European Capital of Culture Ruhr 2010 and is the author of several books.

Thomas Vinterberg is a Danish filmmaker who rose to international attention from co-founding the Dogme 95 movement and contributing the first film to follow its rules, The Celebration (1998). Thomas premiered his latest film, The Hunt (Mads Mikkelsen, Thomas Bo Larsen), at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival, where we had the great opportunity to host him at our TIFF studio space, Onsite [at] OCAD U, where we had an early morning chat about The Hunt and almost every other film he's made... especially It's All About Love.

Thomas Vinterberg
Thomas Vinterberg (born 19 May 1969) is a Danish film director who, along with Lars von Trier, co-founded the Dogme 95 movement in filmmaking, which established rules for simplifying movie production.
Life and career
Vinterberg was born in Copenhagen, Denmark. In 1993, he graduated from the National Film School of Denmark with Last Round (Sidste Omgang), which won the jury and producers' awards at the Munich International Festival of Film Schools, and First Prize at Tel Aviv. That year Vinterberg made his first TV drama for DR TV and his short fiction film The Boy Who Walked Backwards, produced by Birgitte Hald at Nimbus Film.
This film has won awards and accolades all over the world, including Nordic Panorama in Iceland, the International Short Film Festival in Clermont-Ferrand, and the Toronto Film Festival.
His first feature film was The Biggest Heroes (De Største Helte), a road movie that received acclaim in his native Denmark.
In 1995, Vinterberg formed the Dogme 95 movement with Lars von Trier, Kristian Levring, and Søren Kragh-Jacobsen.

Join actor Mads Mikkelsen (Hannibal) and filmmaker Thomas Vinterberg as they discuss The Hunt. As a co-founder of the Dogme 95 movement, Thomas Vinterberg helped draft the revolutionary manifesto's rule #9, which states that the director must not be mentioned in the credits. The Danish filmmaker has since continued to awe audiences with his stories about the often harmonious, but also fraught relationship of the individual to the community. Vinterberg grew up in a hippy commune in 1970s Copenhagen, an experience that informs not only the story and milieu portrayed in his newest film The Commune in Competition, but also his ways of interacting with his cast and crew on film sets. Vinterberg focuses on the powers and complexities of collective working in his universe, from his youth through Dogme and in his latest work.

The co-creator of the Dogma95 manifesto and academy award nominee, Thomas Vinterberg (born 1969), has won international recognition for his work on films like THE CELEBRATION and THE HUNT including European Film Awards and prizes in Cannes. Vinterberg is taking part in this year’s competition at the Berlinale with THE COMMUNE.
Thomas Oberender
Director of Berliner Festspiele, a cultural organization overseeing festivals, exhibitions, programme series and individual events for music, theatre, performance and art in Berlin. Before that he was the chief dramatic advisor and artistic director at Schauspielhaus Bochum from 2000 to 2005, chief dramatic advisor and co-director at Schauspielhaus Zürich in 05/06 and Head of Drama at the Salzburg Festival from 2006 to 2011. He has written and translated several plays, realized art projects for Expo 2000, the Ruhrtriennale art festival, the European Capital of Culture Ruhr 2010 and is the author of several books.

Thomas premiered his latest film, The Hunt (Mads Mikkelsen, Thomas Bo Larsen), at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival, where we had the great opportunity to host him at our TIFF studio space, Onsite [at] OCAD U, where we had an early morning chat about The Hunt and almost every other film he's made... especially It's All About Love.

Thomas Vinterberg - Director and Screenwriter
Celebrated director Thomas Vinterberg graduated from the Danish Film School in 1993. His Graduation film Last Round was an early example of his extraordinary talent and reach; it won a string of awards and was nominated for a student Oscar®. Immediately after came the awardwinning The Boy who walked backwards (1995) which, among others, won at Clermont-Ferrand, and a Robert for Best Short Film.
In 1996 Vinterberg directed his first feature The Biggest Heroes. The film took home three Robert awards. In 1995 Vinterberg and Lars von Trier wrote the Dogme 95 manifesto. Vinterberg's 1998 Dogme film, Festen (The Celebration) was the first film of the movement. It
received a multitude of international awards including the special jury prize at Cannes and the Fassbinder Award at the European Film Awards, as well as the award for Best Foreign Language Film from both the Los Angeles and the New York film critics. In addition, Festen won seven Robert awards and three Bodil awards. In 2008, Vinterberg and von Trier, along with their 'Dogme brothers' Kristian Levring and Søren Kragh-Jacobsen, received the EFA award for Outstanding European Achievement in World Cinema.
Vinterberg has directed two English-language films, It's All About Love (2003), with Joaquin Phoenix, Claire Danes and Sean Penn, and Dear Wendy (2005) starring Jamie Bell which was written by Lars von Trier and won the Silver St. George at the Moscow Film Festival. He returned to the Danish language with the comedy, When A Man Comes Home (2007), followed by SUBMARINO (2010).
The latter was in the main competition at the Berlinale in February 2010. SUBMARINO was awarded the Nordic Council's Film Award in 2010 and in 2011 received five Robert awards and 15 nominations.
In addition, Thomas Vinterberg has written and directed critically acclaimed plays for the national stage at Austria's Burgtheater Wien, which are now playing to sold-out audiences around Europe. He has also directed music videos for Blur and Metallica.

THE HUNT (2012) is a disturbing depiction of how a lie becomes the truth when gossip, doubt and malice are allowed to flourish and ignite a witch-hunt that soon threatens to destroy an innocent man's life.
Mads Mikkelsen plays Lucas, a former school teacher who has been forced to start over having overcome a tough divorce and the loss of his job. Just as things are starting to go his way, his life is shattered. A untruthful remark throws the small community into a collective state of hysteria. The lie is spreading and Lucas is forced to fight a lonely fight for his life and dignity.
Co-founder of the Dogme movement and director of the award-winning international hit FESTEN (THE CELEBRATION), Thomas Vinterberg delivers yet another powerful drama that is sure to leave its mark. Vinterberg wrote the screenplay together with fellow writer-director Tobias Lindholm. Adhering to Dogme's cinematic purity no artificial lighting, no superficial action, no credit for the director, and only handheld cameras for equipment Festen was a commercial and critical success, winning the Jury Prize at Cannes in 1998 and garnering worldwide attention.the film is set at the sixtieth birthday party of Helge, the wealthy patriarch of a large Danish family. The birthday festivities take a turn when Helges son Christian raises a toast and denounces Helge for having raped and abused him as a child, along with his twin sister, who recently committed suicide. The film explores the escalating consequences of Christians announcement, from the stunned dinner partys collective denial, to violence, to an unexpected catharsis.
