Tom the Pole, an essay on the life of Tom Crean by James Sweeney.VOB
Thomas "Tom" Crean (Irish: Tomás Ó Croidheáin; 25 February 1877 – 27 July 1938), was an Irish seaman and Antarctic explorer from Annascaul in County Kerry. He was a member of three major expeditions to Antarctica during the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration, including Captain Scott's 1911–13 Terra Nova Expedition. This saw the race to reach the South Pole lost to Roald Amundsen and ended in the deaths of Scott and his polar party. During this expedition, Crean's 35 statute miles (56 km) solo walk across the Ross Ice Shelf to save the life of Edward Evans led to him receiving the Albert Medal for Lifesaving. Crean had left the family farm near Annascaul to enlist in the Royal Navy at the age of 15. In 1901, while serving on Ringarooma in New Zealand, he volunteered to join Scott's 1901–0...

Tom Crean was involved in three major British expeditions to the Antarctic in the early 1900's. He joined the Royal Navy at the age of 15. He took part in the Discovery Expedition (1901-1904), the Terra Nova Expedition (1910-1913) and the Endurance Expedition (1914-1917). He was awarded the Albert medal, 2nd Class for his bravery during the Terra Nova Expedition. He retired from the Navy in 1920. He returned to Annascaul and opened a small pub which he called 'The South Pole Inn'. After his retirement he never spoke about his Antarctic adventures. He died in 1938 at the age of 61.
Tom Crean Joined the Royal Navy at the age of 15 and went on to serve on three antarctic voyages. For expediency; and because of events in Ireland at that time, his exploits were unknown in his homeland until recent years, but now several books have been written about his exploits during that period. Cliff Wedgbury wrote a song about this heroic Irishman.

n January 2013 polar explorer Tim Jarvis set out to complete the ‘Shackleton Double' - an authentic recreation of the epic journey undertaken by Sir Ernest Shackleton nearly 100 years after his ship sank and his 27 man crew were marooned in Antarctica. To save his men, Shackleton made a gruelling 800 mile sea voyage across the Southern Ocean, followed by a non-stop traverse of the crevasse-laden and previously uncharted glaciers of South Georgia. This is the journey Tim set out to recreate. Tim invited adventure cameraman Ed Wardle to document every step of his attempt. Witness what it takes to film the world's most extreme expedition, and what happens when making a film becomes a fight for survival.
