Macau (/məˈkaʊ/; 澳門; 澳门), also spelled Macao, officially the Macao Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China, is an autonomous territory on the western side of the Pearl River Delta, China. Macau is also bordered by the city of Zhuhai in Mainland China to the North and the Pearl River Estuary to the East and South. Hong Kong lies about 64 kilometers to its East across the Delta.[6] With an estimated population of around 652,500 living in an area of 30.5 km2 (11.8 sq mi), it is the most densely populated region in the world.
Macau was administered by the Portuguese Empire and its inheritor states from the mid-16th century until late 1999, when it was the last remaining European colony in Asia. Portuguese traders first settled in Macau in the 1550s. In 1557, Macau was rented to Portugal from Ming China as a trading port. The Portuguese Empire administered the city under Chinese authority and sovereignty until 1887, when Macau, through a mutual agreement between the two countries, became a colony. Sovereignty over Macau was transferred to China on 20 December 1999. The Joint Declaration on the Question of Macau and Macau Basic Law stipulate that Macau operate with a high degree of autonomy until at least 2049, fifty years after the transfer.
Under the policy of "one country, two systems", the State Council of the People's Republic of China is responsible for military defense and foreign affairs while Macau maintains its own legal system, public security force, monetary system, customs policy, and immigration policy. Macau participates in international organizations and events that do not require members to possess national sovereignty.

Special administrative regions of China
The special administrative regions (SAR; Portuguese: RAE) are autonomous territories that fall within the sovereignty of the People's Republic of China, yet do not form part of Mainland China. The legal basis for the establishment of SARs, unlike the administrative divisions of Mainland China, is provided for by Article 31, rather than Article 30, of the Constitution of the People's Republic of China of 1982. Article 31 reads: "The state may establish special administrative regions when necessary. The systems to be instituted in special administrative regions shall be prescribed by law enacted by the National People's Congress in the light of the specific conditions".
At present, there are two SARs established according to the Constitution, namely the Hong Kong SAR and the Macau SAR, former British and Portuguese dependencies respectively, transferred to China in 1997 and 1999 pursuant to the Sino-British Joint Declaration of 1984 and the Sino-Portuguese Joint Declaration of 1987 respectively. There is additionally the Wolong Special Administrative Region in Sichuan province, which is however not established according to Article 31 of the Constitution.

Macau (/məˈkaʊ/; 澳門; 澳门), also spelled Macao, officially the Macao Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China, is an autonomous territory on the western side of the Pearl River Delta, China. Macau is also bordered by the city of Zhuhai in Mainland China to the North and the Pearl River Estuary to the East and South. Hong Kong lies about 64 kilometers to its East across the Delta.[6] With an estimated population of around 652,500 living in an area of 30.5 km2 (11.8 sq mi), it is the most densely populated region in the world.
Macau was administered by the Portuguese Empire and its inheritor states from the mid-16th century until late 1999, when it was the last remaining European colony in Asia. Portuguese traders first settled in Macau in the 1550s. In 1557, Macau was rented to Portugal from Ming China as a trading port. The Portuguese Empire administered the city under Chinese authority and sovereignty until 1887, when Macau, through a mutual agreement between the two countries, became a colony. Sovereignty over Macau was transferred to China on 20 December 1999. The Joint Declaration on the Question of Macau and Macau Basic Law stipulate that Macau operate with a high degree of autonomy until at least 2049, fifty years after the transfer.
Under the policy of "one country, two systems", the State Council of the People's Republic of China is responsible for military defense and foreign affairs while Macau maintains its own legal system, public security force, monetary system, customs policy, and immigration policy. Macau participates in international organizations and events that do not require members to possess national sovereignty.

The Special Administrative Regions of the People's Republic of China (SAR; Portuguese: RAE) are autonomous territories that fall within the sovereignty of the People's Republic of China, yet do not form part of Mainland China. The twin panda cubs in the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) have officially been named "Jian Jian" and "Kang Kang", the city's civil affair authority said on Saturday. The names represent good wishes from the Macao people, as Jian and Kang in Chinese means "good health". They are chosen from among the 1,718 names offered by 3,587 people, Macao's Civic and Municipal Affairs Bureau (CMAB) said. "Jian Jian" and "Kang Kang" are the most favored choices as they were proposed by 1,117 people, who said they so named them to wish the panda cubs good health and wish Macao people good health and happy life. Macao Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China, is an autonomous territory on the western side of the Pearl River Delta in China. Macau is also bordered by the city of Zhuhai in Mainland China to the North and the Pearl River Estuary to the East and South. Hong Kong lies about 64 kilometres (40 mi) to its East across the Delta.[6] With an estimated population of around 652,500 living in an area of 30.5 km² (11.8 sq mi), it is the most densely populated region in the world.[a]
Macau was administered by the Portuguese Empire and its inheritor states from the mid-16th century until late 1999, when it was the last remaining European colony in Asia.[7][8] Portuguese traders first settled in Macau in the 1550s. In 1557, Macau was rented to Portugal from Ming China as a trading port. The Portuguese Empire administered the city under Chinese authority and sovereignty until 1887, when Macau, through a mutual agreement between the two countries, became a colony. Sovereignty over Macau was transferred to China on 20 December 1999. The Joint Declaration on the Question of Macau and Macau Basic Law stipulate that Macau operate with a high degree of autonomy until at least 2049, fifty years after the transfer.[9]
Under the policy of "one country, two systems", the State Council of the People's Republic of China is responsible for military defense and foreign affairs while Macau maintains its own legal system, public security force, monetary system, customs policy, and immigration policy. Macau participates in international organizations and events that do not require members to possess national sovereignty.
Macau is among the world's richest regions, and as of 2015 its GDP per capita by purchasing power parity is higher than that of any country in the world, according to the World Bank.[11] It became the world's largest gambling centre in 2006,[12] with the economy heavily dependent on gambling and tourism, as well as manufacturing. According to The World Factbook, Macau has the fourth highest life expectancy in the world.[13] Moreover, it is one of the regions in Asia with a "very high Human Development Index", ranking 18th in the world as of 2014.

The twin panda cubs in the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) have officially been named "Jian Jian" and "Kang Kang", the city's civil affair authority said on Saturday.
The names represent good wishes from the Macao people, as Jian and Kang in Chinese means "good health". They are chosen from among the 1,718 names offered by 3,587 people, Macao's Civic and Municipal Affairs Bureau (CMAB) said.
"Jian Jian" and "Kang Kang" are the most favored choices as they were proposed by 1,117 people, who said they so named them to wish the panda cubs good health and wish Macao people good health and happy life.
CMAB said another reason for making the choice is their parents' names "Kai Kai" and "Xin Xin", which means "happy or delighted", names that are frequently used together with "Jian Jian" and "Kang Kang" in Chinese. The combination of this family's names means happiness and good health.
According to the panda care team, the twin cubs now weigh 4,115 grams and 3,335 grams, respectively, from 135 grams and 53.8 grams at birth. They have their parents' black-and-white appearance, with their eyes open, but they can see things only in front of their eyes.
Female panda Xin Xin has given birth to the pair of male twin cubs on June 26, 2016. Elite Olympic athletes from the Chinese mainland visited a healthcare center for the elderly and a kindergarten in the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China on Wednesday.
Olympic athletes, including many medalists from the swimming, diving, weight lifting and track and field teams visited a day care center for the elderly in the morning, learning nursing skills and helping the senior residents to check their blood pressures.
"We are glad to see these athletes come here. We couldn't match them with the faces in the past, but we got to know them today. They are really young, with even the oldest person aging 28 while some are just 18 years old," said a senior Macao resident at the care center.
"This is not my first time (to visit such centers). We have always done this before in the mainland. I think it's meaningful, since there are many people in the world who need help from others. While I think as for us, we really enjoy happiness and within the scope of our strength, we should use our influence to help as many people as we can," said Sun Yang, an Olympic swimming champion.

Delegation of Chinese mainland Olympians attended "A date with the youth" activity to share joys and pains in training and competition on Tuesday morning after arriving in Macao Monday afternoon.
More than 1,500 Macao students participated in the activity. Chui Sai On, the Chief Executive of Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) attended the event.
The activity started with a video introducing the history of Chinese Olympians winning Olympic gold medals. Eight athletes of the 64-member delegation shared their feelings with the students, including captain of the Chinese women's volleyball team Hui Ruoqi, volleyball player Zhu Ting, taekwondo athlete Zhao Shuai, weightlifter Long Qingquan, pistol shooter Zhang Mengxue, table tennis player Ding Ning, teenage diver Ren Qian and swimmer Fu Yuanhui.
"I hope everybody happy in your daily life. I said I was satisfied with today's result, which didn't mean I would stop working hard tomorrow. Satisfied with today's result is just a sense of satisfaction and happiness. But I will continue to make efforts tomorrow. Hope everybody happy every day," said Fu Yuanhui, the swimmer who become an Internet buzz because of her funny expression.
The athletes also answered questions raised by the students. When answering a question about winning gold medal with injuries, Hui Ruoqi said that every effort to follow the dream is worthwhile.
"When you are in trouble, if you hang in there, you might be close to success," said Hui.
The athletes encouraged the students to chase dreams with their own experience. Then all the athletes of the delegation arrived at the site and marched around the venue to greet the students.
"I am an athlete, I play badminton. They gave me the motivation and taught me to stick it out no matter what happens," said a high school student.
"I think we must be persistent. They encouraged me. I'm a senior student and I will graduate to find a job soon. I may encounter difficulties in the future. The activity brought me many encouragement and taught me to stick it out and how to overcome difficulties," said a college student.
During their four-day visit, the athletes will go to six different communities to meet with local residents and showcase their sporting skills and communicate with Macao teenagers on Wednesday.
In Rio Olympic Games, the Chinese delegation won 26 gold, 18 silver and 26 bronze medals. Chinese athletes set five world records and 12 Olympic records, also winning the first gold medal for China in bicycle and men's taekwondo. Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture of the Macao Government Alexis Tam Chon Weng, officials from the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, and head of the Sports Bureau of the Macao Special Administrative Region welcomed the athletes at the dock.
The 64-strong delegation consisting of five coaches, 42 gold medalists and 3 elite representatives left for Macao after their activities in Hong Kong. Fifteen student representatives presented bouquets to the delegation and around 235 students lined up to express hearty welcome. Waving China’s national flag and the flag of Macao, they conveyed enormous passion of Macao compatriots to the outstanding athletes. A number of Macao residents were also waiting at the scene.
"I'd like to see China's national women's volleyball team, to see how they won gold medals at the Olympic Games," a boy said.
"There is nothing impossible. The success of these athletes has given me an implication that many things are not difficult and we can do them. Just like the athletes who have reached the best time of their professional career, we can make it, too," said a local resident.
Fernando Chui Sai On, Macao Chief Executive, is scheduled to meet with the delegation in the evening and hold a welcome banquet. Macau lies on the western side of the Pearl River Delta across from Hong Kong to the east, which is about 64 kilometers, also bordered by Guangdong Province to the north and facing the South China Sea to the east and south. A former Portuguese colony, Macau was administered by Portugal from the mid-16th century until late 1999, when it was the last remaining European colony in Asia. Portuguese traders first settled in Macau in the 1550s. In 1557, Macau was rented to Portugal by the Chinese empire as a trading port. The Portuguese administered the city under Chinese authority and sovereignty until 1887, when Macau became a colony of the Portuguese empire. Sovereignty over Macau was transferred back to China on 20 December 1999. The Sino-Portuguese Joint Declaration and the Basic Law of Macau stipulate that Macau operate with a high degree of autonomy until at least 2049, fifty years after the transfer. By 2002, it had become one of the world's richest cities. It became the world's biggest gambling centre in 2006.

The Macau football team (Chinese: 澳門足球代表隊; Portuguese: Selecção Macaense de Futebol) represents the Chinese special administrative region of Macau in international association football. The team is supervised by the Macau Football Association (Chinese: 澳門足球總會; Portuguese: Associação de Futebol de Macau). The Macau football team has a ranking that is one of the lowest among the FIFA members. Although usually known as simply Macau, the EAFF refer to the team as Macau, China.
The team had been representing Macau in international football events before 1999 when Macau was a dependent territory of Portugal. It continues to represent Macau even after Macau was handed over to the People's Republic of China by Portugal and became a special administrative region of the People's Republic of China in 1999. This team is separate from the China PR national football team, as the Basic Law and the principle of "one country, two systems" allows Macau to maintain its own representative teams in international sports competitions.
