Although many people contributed to the study of infinity over the centuries it was Georg Cantor in the nineteenth century who established its modern development. Cantor created modern set theory and established the importance of one-to-one correspondence between sets. For example he showed that the set of all integers can be put into one-to-one correspondence with the set of all fractions and so these two sets have the same infinity. But he also proved the remarkable result that there are infinitely many infinities, all of different sizes.

Moshe Kussevitsky
1899 - 1966
There's a famous Hebrew saying, Al Ta'am Varei'ach Ein Lehivakei'ach - You can't argue over taste or smell. This is a very fortunate epithet in regards to taste in Chazanut and Chazanim. Everyone's an expert and every Shul-going Jew knows what a good Chazan is.
Whilst not everyone will agree that Moshe Kussevitsky was the finest Chazan who ever lived (see above!), it's inconceivable that anyone would say that he wasn't at least, one of the finest.
Moshe Kussevitsky is regarded generally as the Chazan's Chazan. He was possessed of an outstanding, well-trained, tenor voice of extraordinay range and flexibility and an innate understanding of the art of Chazanut.
Moshe was born on June 9th 1899 at Smargon in Vilna, Lithuania and came from a background of Chazanut. Moshe was the oldest of the four brothers, with Jacob, Simcha and David and, as is well-known, they all went on to become famous Chazanim in their own right.
Moshe began his career at the age of eight as an alto in the choir of Chazan Shlepak and as he grew up he toyed with the idea of becoming an artist or a sculptor. Fortunately, however, he accepted a position as Chazan at the Vilna 'Savel's Shul' and in 1927 he auditioned for the plum position in Poland at the 'Tlomazke Shul' in Warsaw where, against the finest opposition, he was awarded the post. He took the opportunity to study voice and music and throughout his life he always learned Torah.
Being in such an illustrious job, his fame spread around Europe very rapidly and soon he was travelling to Brussels, Antwerp, Vienna and London to give concerts.
During the second world war Moshe took his family to Russia and adopted the name Mikhail Kussevitsky. While he was there he sang in the operas Boris Goudenov, Tosca and Rigoletto.
When he returned to Poland he gave a concert at which the ambassadors of the United Kingdom and the United States were in the audience. As a result of this concert he obtained visas for both countries and came to England until 1947, when he went to settle in America.
Moshe continued to travel and concertise all over the world and there will probably be people reading this who will recall his appearance at the Royal Albert Hall, London, on 13th March 1955. Fortunately he also made numerous recordings and, even though they were produced on comparatively primitive equipment, it is still possible to appreciate the exceptional quality of his voice and his singing on those that have been re-recorded today.
The last post he held was at the famous Temple Beth El in Boro Park, Brooklyn.
Moshe died on August 23rd 1966 and is buried in Jersualem.

This video clip, which was produced especially for the Jewish High Holidays, shows the IDF chief cantor and IDF soldiers singing the prayer "Unetanneh Tokef" in the Great Synagogue in Tel Aviv. The video features footage of the Yom Kippur War and one of its heroes, Brig. Gen. (res.) Avigdor Kahalani, who was a battalion commander in the Armored Brigade, fought in the battle of the Valley of Tears and was awarded a Medal of Valor.

Legendary violinist Itzhak Perlman and renowned cantor Yitzchak Meir Helfgot join forces for a musical exploration of liturgical and traditional works in new arrangements for both chamber orchestra and klezmer settings on THIRTEEN’s Great Performances, airing Thursday, August 28 at 9 p.m. on PBS. (Check local listings.) (In New York, THIRTEEN will air the program Sunday, September 21 at 7 p.m.)
The music of Rejoice with Itzhak Perlman and Cantor Yitzchak Meir Helfgot showcases the confluence between the violinist’s famed classical technique and Helfgot’s magnificent voice, and is the result of a mutual admiration society. “It was a dream to someday sing with him,” remarks Helfgot. “And now the dream has become real.” Also featuring reminiscences by Elie Wiesel, Joel Grey, and Neil Sedaka, the program is directed by Joshua Waletzky, whose earlier collaboration with Perlman, In the Fiddler’s House, won a Primetime Emmy in 1995.
For Perlman, the collaboration represents “the completion of a cycle” of accompanying three great voices—Placido Domingo, Luciano Pavarotti, and now Helfgot, who serves as Chief Cantor at Manhattan’s Park East Synagogue. The special also represents for him, “the fulfillment of a dream.” Perlman and Helfgot recently collaborated in a couple of show-stopping performances featured in Great Performances 40th Anniversary Celebration. In Rejoice with Itzhak Perlman and Cantor Yitzchak Meir Helfgot, these two incomparable virtuosos unite for an evening of cantorial masterpieces, Yiddish folk and theater tunes, Hassidic melodies, and klezmer instrumentals.
Joined at the piano by music director Dr. Hankus Netsky (Chair of Boston’s New England Conservatory Contemporary Improvisation Department), Netsky’s Klezmer Conservatory Band, and the Rejoice Chamber Orchestra under the direction of conductor Russell Ger, Perlman and Helfgot present a program of songs that are alternately joyful and intensely moving, but always concluding with a buoyant climax.
Between numbers, Perlman provides elucidating and historical commentary, humorously interacting with Netsky, Helfgot and the audience.
Rejoice with Itzhak Perlman and Cantor Yitzchak Meier Helfgot will be released on DVD by C Major Entertainment, distributed by Naxos of America.

Cantor
A cantor in general is a person who leads people in singing, or sometimes in prayer. In formal Christian worship, a cantor is a person who sings solo verses or passages to which the choir or congregation responds. In Judaism, a cantor is one who sings and leads people in prayer in a Jewish religious service, and may be called hazzan. "Cantor" is used as a translation of equivalent terms in other languages, such as for the leader of singing on a traditional Kerali snake boat, a Chundan Vallam .
A similar term is precentor, defined as a leader of the singing of a choir or congregation.
More specific types of cantor include:
- Domestikos, leader of the right choir (Orthodox Church)
- Lampadarios, leader of the left choir (Orthodox Church)

Itzhak Perlman
Itzhak Perlman (Hebrew: יצחק פרלמן; born August 31, 1945) is an Israeli-American violinist, conductor, and pedagogue. Over the course of his career, Perlman has performed worldwide, and throughout the United States, in venues that have included a State Dinner at the White House honoring Queen Elizabeth II, and a Presidential Inauguration, and he has conducted the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and the Westchester Philharmonic.
In 2015, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
Early life
Perlman was born in Tel Aviv in 1945, then British Mandate of Palestine, now Israel. His parents, Chaim and Shoshana Perlman, were natives of Poland and had independently immigrated to Palestine in the mid-1930s before they met and later married.
Perlman first became interested in the violin after hearing a classical music performance on the radio. At the age of three, he was denied admission to the Shulamit Conservatory for being too small to hold a violin. He instead taught himself how to play the instrument using a toy fiddle until he was old enough to study with Rivka Goldgart at the Shulamit Conservatory and at the Academy of Music in Tel Aviv, where he gave his first recital at age 10, before moving to the United States to study at the Juilliard School with the violin pedagogue Ivan Galamian and his assistant Dorothy DeLay.

In Rejoice with Itzhak Perlman and Cantor Yitzchak Meir Helfgot, these two incomparable virtuosos unite for an evening of cantorial masterpieces, Yiddish folk and theater tunes, Hassidic melodies, and klezmer instrumentals. Joined at the piano by music director Dr. Hankus Netsky (Chair of Boston’s New England Conservatory Contemporary Improvisation Department), Netsky’s Klezmer Conservatory Band, and the Rejoice Chamber Orchestra under the direction of conductor Russell Ger, Perlman and Helfgot present a program of songs that are alternately joyful and intensely moving, but always concluding with a buoyant climax. Although many people contributed to the study of infinity over the centuries it was Georg Cantor in the nineteenth century who established its modern development. Cantor created modern set theory and established the importance of one-to-one correspondence between sets. For example he showed that the set of all integers can be put into one-to-one correspondence with the set of all fractions and so these two sets have the same infinity. But he also proved the remarkable result that there are infinitely many infinities, all of different sizes. IDF Chief Cantor Sings "Unetanneh Tokef"
This video clip, which was produced especially for the Jewish High Holidays, shows the IDF chief cantor and IDF soldiers singing the prayer "Unetanneh Tokef" in the Great Synagogue in Tel Aviv. The video features footage of the Yom Kippur War and one of its heroes, Brig. Gen. (res.) Avigdor Kahalani, who was a battalion commander in the Armored Brigade, fought in the battle of the Valley of Tears and was awarded a Medal of Valor. Special thanks to: Brig. Gen. (res.) Cantor created modern set theory and established the importance of one-to-one correspondence between sets. For example he showed that the set of all integers can be put into one-to-one correspondence with the set of all fractions and so these two sets have the same infinity. But he also proved the remarkable result that there are infinitely many infinities, all of different sizes.

There's a famous Hebrew saying, Al Ta'am Varei'ach Ein Lehivakei'ach - You can't argue over taste or smell. This is a very fortunate epithet in regards to taste in Chazanut and Chazanim. Everyone's an expert and every Shul-going Jew knows what a good Chazan is.
Whilst not everyone will agree that Moshe Kussevitsky was the finest Chazan who ever lived (see above!), it's inconceivable that anyone would say that he wasn't at least, one of the finest.
Moshe Kussevitsky is regarded generally as the Chazan's Chazan. He was possessed of an outstanding, well-trained, tenor voice of extraordinay range and flexibility and an innate understanding of the art of Chazanut.
Moshe was born on June 9th 1899 at Smargon in Vilna, Lithuania and came from a background of Chazanut. Moshe was the oldest of the four brothers, with Jacob, Simcha and David and, as is well-known, they all went on to become famous Chazanim in their own right.
Moshe began his career at the age of eight as an alto in the choir of Chazan Shlepak and as he grew up he toyed with the idea of becoming an artist or a sculptor. Fortunately, however, he accepted a position as Chazan at the Vilna 'Savel's Shul' and in 1927 he auditioned for the plum position in Poland at the 'Tlomazke Shul' in Warsaw where, against the finest opposition, he was awarded the post. He took the opportunity to study voice and music and throughout his life he always learned Torah.
Being in such an illustrious job, his fame spread around Europe very rapidly and soon he was travelling to Brussels, Antwerp, Vienna and London to give concerts.
During the second world war Moshe took his family to Russia and adopted the name Mikhail Kussevitsky. While he was there he sang in the operas Boris Goudenov, Tosca and Rigoletto.
When he returned to Poland he gave a concert at which the ambassadors of the United Kingdom and the United States were in the audience. As a result of this concert he obtained visas for both countries and came to England until 1947, when he went to settle in America.
Moshe continued to travel and concertise all over the world and there will probably be people reading this who will recall his appearance at the Royal Albert Hall, London, on 13th March 1955. Fortunately he also made numerous recordings and, even though they were produced on comparatively primitive equipment, it is still possible to appreciate the exceptional quality of his voice and his singing on those that have been re-recorded today.
The last post he held was at the famous Temple Beth El in Boro Park, Brooklyn.
Moshe died on August 23rd 1966 and is buried in Jersualem.

The music of Rejoice with Itzhak Perlman and Cantor Yitzchak Meir Helfgot showcases the confluence between the violinist’s famed classical technique and Helfgot’s magnificent voice, and is the result of a mutual admiration society. “It was a dream to someday sing with him,” remarks Helfgot. “And now the dream has become real.” Also featuring reminiscences by Elie Wiesel, Joel Grey, and Neil Sedaka, the program is directed by Joshua Waletzky, whose earlier collaboration with Perlman, In the Fiddler’s House, won a Primetime Emmy in 1995.
For Perlman, the collaboration represents “the completion of a cycle” of accompanying three great voices—Placido Domingo, Luciano Pavarotti, and now Helfgot, who serves as Chief Cantor at Manhattan’s Park East Synagogue. The special also represents for him, “the fulfillment of a dream.” Perlman and Helfgot recently collaborated in a couple of show-stopping performances featured in Great Performances 40th Anniversary Celebration. In Rejoice with Itzhak Perlman and Cantor Yitzchak Meir Helfgot, these two incomparable virtuosos unite for an evening of cantorial masterpieces, Yiddish folk and theater tunes, Hassidic melodies, and klezmer instrumentals.
Joined at the piano by music director Dr. Hankus Netsky (Chair of Boston’s New England Conservatory Contemporary Improvisation Department), Netsky’s Klezmer Conservatory Band, and the Rejoice Chamber Orchestra under the direction of conductor Russell Ger, Perlman and Helfgot present a program of songs that are alternately joyful and intensely moving, but always concluding with a buoyant climax.
Between numbers, Perlman provides elucidating and historical commentary, humorously interacting with Netsky, Helfgot and the audience.
Rejoice with Itzhak Perlman and Cantor Yitzchak Meier Helfgot will be released on DVD by C Major Entertainment, distributed by Naxos of America.
Rejoice with Itzhak Perlman and Cantor Yitzchak Meir Helfgot is produced by THIRTEEN Productions LLC for WNET. Directed by Joshua Waletzky, the sets are by David Korins with lighting by Ken Billington. For Great Performances, John Walker, Mitch Owgang and Richard R. Schilling are producers, Phil Hack is line producer and David Frost is audio producer; Bill O’Donnell is series producer and David Horn is executive producer.

Legendary violinist Itzhak Perlman and renowned cantor Yitzchak Meir Helfgot join forces for a musical exploration of liturgical and traditional works in new arrangements for both chamber orchestra and klezmer settings on THIRTEEN’s Great Performances, airing Thursday, August 28 at 9 p.m. on PBS. (Check local listings.) (In New York, THIRTEEN will air the program Sunday, September 21 at 7 p.m.)
The music of Rejoice with Itzhak Perlman and Cantor Yitzchak Meir Helfgot showcases the confluence between the violinist’s famed classical technique and Helfgot’s magnificent voice, and is the result of a mutual admiration society. “It was a dream to someday sing with him,” remarks Helfgot. “And now the dream has become real.” Also featuring reminiscences by Elie Wiesel, Joel Grey, and Neil Sedaka, the program is directed by Joshua Waletzky, whose earlier collaboration with Perlman, In the Fiddler’s House, won a Primetime Emmy in 1995.
For Perlman, the collaboration represents “the completion of a cycle” of accompanying three great voices—Placido Domingo, Luciano Pavarotti, and now Helfgot, who serves as Chief Cantor at Manhattan’s Park East Synagogue. The special also represents for him, “the fulfillment of a dream.” Perlman and Helfgot recently collaborated in a couple of show-stopping performances featured in Great Performances 40th Anniversary Celebration. In Rejoice with Itzhak Perlman and Cantor Yitzchak Meir Helfgot, these two incomparable virtuosos unite for an evening of cantorial masterpieces, Yiddish folk and theater tunes, Hassidic melodies, and klezmer instrumentals.
Joined at the piano by music director Dr. Hankus Netsky (Chair of Boston’s New England Conservatory Contemporary Improvisation Department), Netsky’s Klezmer Conservatory Band, and the Rejoice Chamber Orchestra under the direction of conductor Russell Ger, Perlman and Helfgot present a program of songs that are alternately joyful and intensely moving, but always concluding with a buoyant climax.
Between numbers, Perlman provides elucidating and historical commentary, humorously interacting with Netsky, Helfgot and the audience.
Rejoice with Itzhak Perlman and Cantor Yitzchak Meier Helfgot will be released on DVD by C Major Entertainment, distributed by Naxos of America.
Rejoice with Itzhak Perlman and Cantor Yitzchak Meir Helfgot is produced by THIRTEEN Productions LLC for WNET. Directed by Joshua Waletzky, the sets are by David Korins with lighting by Ken Billington. For Great Performances, John Walker, Mitch Owgang and Richard R. Schilling are producers, Phil Hack is line producer and David Frost is audio producer; Bill O’Donnell is series producer and David Horn is executive producer.

O Domingo Show encontrou o jovem cantor Leandro embaixo de um viaduto. Viciado em drogas, ele foi morar na rua, onde, sem a menor dignidade, se alimentava de lixo. A reportagem levou até Leandro os pais dele, que não o viam havia seis meses, e propôs que ele se internasse para tratar a dependência química.
