The Hershey train, or as some locals call it "the chocolate train," is a vital link between Cuba's capital Havana and a string of remote towns stretching east from the capital for 60 miles 96 (kilometres) along Cuba's eastern coast.
It's only two cars long and runs on electricity.
The train's starting point adjacent to Havana Bay gives little indication of its importance to the lives of the people who use it regularly, or its unique history.
A run-down station called Casa Blanca, or "White House," marks the start of the train's 60-mile run.
The train takes passengers through a picturesque landscape of Cuba's rugged interior, ending in Matanzas, 60 miles east of Cuba's capital.
The line was established by U.S. chocolate magnate Milton S. Hershey in 1916, who also went on to build a factory to process sugarcane, and a town to house the thousands of Cuban workers hired by the company.
It's still a source of nostalgia for some.
"I know he was a chocolatier who came to invest in Cuba's sugar industry and I think, even today, I think his grandchildren still produce Hershey chocolate," said the train's conductor Ernesto Ortiz.
Surprisingly, that history is still part of local folklore, and many of the buildings and housing built by the company remain inhabited by locals to this day.
"This was an American town, a headquarters, the headquarters of Mr. Hershey. He had that and what we call the company housing, the old company housing," Javier Caraballo said on the town's train platform.
The company housing lines many of the streets of the town, that still bears his name.
Solidly built southern California-style bungalows housed company workers, and now Cuban families in post-revolution Cuba. A church still stands on a corner.
For many, it's the only form of transportation available on a regular basis, linking the agricultural interior with the coast and two major cities, Havana and Matanzas.

Commuter town
A commuter town is a town whose residents normally work elsewhere, although they live and sleep in these neighborhoods. The name also suggests that these communities have little commercial or industrial activity beyond a small amount of retail, oriented toward serving the residents.
Names
A commuter town may also be known as an exurb (short for "extra-urban"), or a bedroom community (Canada and northeastern U.S. usage), bedroom town or bedroom suburb (U.S. usage), a dormitory town or dormitory suburb (UK Commonwealth and Ireland usage also sometimes Canadian), or less commonly a dormitory village (UK Commonwealth Ireland and sometimes Canadian as well). The phrase "bedroom town" has also been adopted into the Japanese wasei-eigo word bed town (ベッドタウン, beddotaun).
Distinction between suburbs and commuter towns
Suburbs and commuter towns are often the same place, but sometimes not. As with college town, resort town, and mill town, the term commuter town describes the place's predominant economic function. A suburb in contrast is a community of lesser size, density, political power and/or commerce than a nearby community. Economic function may change, for example when improved transport brings commuters to industrial suburbs or railway towns in search of suburban living. Some suburbs, for example Teterboro, New Jersey and Emeryville, California remained industrial when they became surrounded by commuter towns. Many commuters work in such industrial suburbs but few reside; hence, they are not commuter towns.

The Hershey train, or as some locals call it "the chocolate train," is a vital link between Cuba's capital Havana and a string of remote towns stretching east from the capital for 60 miles 96 (kilometres) along Cuba's eastern coast.
It's only two cars long and runs on electricity.
The train's starting point adjacent to Havana Bay gives little indication of its importance to the lives of the people who use it regularly, or its unique history.
A run-down station called Casa Blanca, or "White House," marks the start of the train's 60-mile run.
The train takes passengers through a picturesque landscape of Cuba's rugged interior, ending in Matanzas, 60 miles east of Cuba's capital.
The line was established by U.S. chocolate magnate Milton S. Hershey in 1916, who also went on to build a factory to process sugarcane, and a town to house the thousands of Cuban workers hired by the company.
It's still a source of nostalgia for some.
"I know he was a chocolatier who came to invest in Cuba's sugar industry and I think, even today, I think his grandchildren still produce Hershey chocolate," said the train's conductor Ernesto Ortiz.
Surprisingly, that history is still part of local folklore, and many of the buildings and housing built by the company remain inhabited by locals to this day.
"This was an American town, a headquarters, the headquarters of Mr. Hershey. He had that and what we call the company housing, the old company housing," Javier Caraballo said on the town's train platform.
The company housing lines many of the streets of the town, that still bears his name.
Solidly built southern California-style bungalows housed company workers, and now Cuban families in post-revolution Cuba. A church still stands on a corner.
For many, it's the only form of transportation available on a regular basis, linking the agricultural interior with the coast and two major cities, Havana and Matanzas.

I live in Astoria and work in Manhattan. I commute to work by bicycle every day with agreeable weather. I have been doing this without any accidents of any kind since the spring of 2010. I have a GoPro Hero 2 HD mounted to my bike, and record every ride. I have tons of these recordings saved, but haven't shared any of them. I was waiting for something interesting to happen during the ride. As of yet, nothing has happened. I guess because I'm jaded I didn't think that the average ride could itself be interesting. I used to commute in and out of from London Liverpool St for over a decade so this in this video I thought I would try the journey from the driver's perspective! I'm driving the Siemens-built Class 360 EMU, operated by Greater Anglia from Colchester Town and my first pick-up is to four more commuter cars at Colchester. I then have to take passengers from Colchester, stopping at a number of stations on the line including my home town of Chelmsford. The setting is winter and it's early morning. A ride on Barcelona's suburban Cercanías (in Spanish) / Rodalies (in Catalan) commuter rail along the Mediterranean coast north of Barcelona, where old houses and narrow streets on the one hand and new resort structures on the other hand are juxtaposed. Note the two separate begging notes left on the train seat, one by a woman and one by a man a few stations down the line, describing their poverty and the children they are raising, while the reader decides whether or not to be charitable.

I live in Astoria and work in Manhattan. I commute to work by bicycle every day with agreeable weather. I have been doing this without any accidents of any kind since the spring of 2010.
I have a GoPro Hero 2 HD mounted to my bike, and record every ride. I have tons of these recordings saved, but haven't shared any of them. I was waiting for something interesting to happen during the ride. As of yet, nothing has happened. I guess because I'm jaded I didn't think that the average ride could itself be interesting. At least one person wanted to see it, so here it is.
Also, there are many people I have met who are afraid to ride their bike on busy city streets. I was also afraid at first, and I am still more cautious than most. While the new Citi Bike share program (seen in the video) can give people bikes, it can't take away their fear. I want this video to show the reality of what it is like to bike in NYC to give people realistic expectations. That way they can hopefully change their irrational fear into healthy caution and get on the road.

I then have to take passengers from Colchester, stopping at a number of stations on the line including my home town of Chelmsford. The setting is winter and it's early morning. Hey guys! Welcome back! This is basically an introductory tutorial to trains - first of many! With trains too, there's really so much to cover and do so hopefully this is a nice way to get started :)
My general goal for the trains right now is to get some regional train stations in place - not too many, just to try and cut back on overall train traffic. Have those passengers then convert to an internal form of public transit or switch over to our internal train network.
I will be making a few more follow up episodes geared towards trains so this is definitely not the last time we'll be talking about them!
