Banbridge (/bænˈbrɪdʒ/ ban-BRIJ) is a town in County Down, Northern Ireland. It lies on the River Bann and the A1 road and is named after a bridge built over the River Bann in 1712. It is situated in the civil parish of Seapatrick and the historic barony of Iveagh Upper, Upper Half. The town began as a coaching stop on the road from Belfast to Dublin and thrived from Irish linen manufacturing. The town is the headquarters for Banbridge District Council. It had a population of 16,653 people in the 2011 Census.
The town's main street is very unusual, and rises to a steep hill before levelling out. In 1834 an underpass was built as horses with heavy loads would faint before reaching the top of the hill. It was built by William Dargan and is officially named 'Downshire Bridge', though it is often called "The Cut".
Banbridge, home to the "Star of the County Down", is a relatively young town, first entering recorded history around 1691 during the aftermath of the struggle between William III and James II. An Outlawry Court was set up in the town to deal with the followers of James. The town grew up around the site where the main road from Belfast to Dublin crossed the River Bann over an Old Bridge which was situated where the present bridge now stands.
English/Nat A car bomb exploded in a predominantly Protestant town in Northern Ireland on Saturday. The blast injured six people and damaged shops in central Banbridge, 22 miles (35 kilometres) southwest of Belfast. A warning was issued but although police frantically tried to complete evacuations, the central street was still full of people when the bomb exploded and panic ensued. No one has yet claimed responsbility for the attack. Shop windows shattered as a car bomb exploded in this mostly Protestant town of Banbridge in Northern Ireland. Six people were taken to the hospital with minor injuries, but amazingly, no one was seriously injured or killed. Buildings in the street that had been bustling with shoppers not long before the blast suffered extensive damage....

The town of Banbridge, some 25 miles from Belfast, dates from the end of the 17th century. Like many such towns it is notable for its very long and wide main street. A possibly unique feature (for its time) is 'The Cut' which splits and levels out the hilly main street. This underpass dates from 1834 and was intended to ease the burden for horses pulling heavy loads. Banbridge is named after the bridge over the River Bann. The bridge features several times in the video. Historically, Banbridge had an important role in the linen and flax industries, and was a staging post on the old coach route from Dublin to Belfast. The fine Downshire Arms Hotel still retains many of the architectural features of a Georgian coaching inn. The town is well worth a visit. It is a town of character with lot...
