The National Museum of Iraq (Arabic: المتحف العراقي) is a museum located in Baghdad, Iraq. Also known as the Iraq Museum, or the Baghdad Museum, it contains precious relics from the Mesopotamian civilization. It was looted during and after the 2003 Invasion of Iraq. International efforts led to many stolen artifacts being returned. After being closed for many years while being refurbished, and rarely open for public viewing, the museum was officially reopened in February 2015.
After World War I, archaeologists from Europe and the United States began several excavations throughout Iraq. In an effort to keep those findings from leaving Iraq, British traveller, intelligence agent, archaeologist, and author Gertrude Bell began collecting the artifacts in a government building in Baghdad in 1922. In 1926, the Iraqi government moved the collection to a new building and established the Baghdad Antiquities Museum, with Bell as its director. Bell died later that year.

Iraq (/ɪˈræk/, i/ɪˈrɑːk/, or /aɪˈræk/; Arabic: العراق al-‘Irāq, Kurdish: Êraq), officially the Republic of Iraq (Arabic:
جمهورية العراق Jumhūrīyat al-‘Irāq; Kurdish: كۆماری عێراق Komar-i ‘Êraq), is a country in Western Asia. The country borders Turkey to the north, Iran to the east, Kuwait to the southeast, Saudi Arabia to the south, Jordan to the southwest, and Syria to the west. The southern part of Iraq is within the Arabian Peninsula. The capital, Baghdad, is in the centre of the country and its largest city. The largest ethnic groups in Iraq are Arabs and Kurds. Other ethnic groups include Assyrians, Turkmen, Shabakis, Yazidis, Armenians, Mandeans, Circassians, and Kawliya. Around 95% of the country's 36 million citizens are Shia or Sunni Muslims, with Christianity, Yarsan, Yezidism, and Mandeanism also present.
Iraq has a narrow section of coastline measuring 58 km (36 mi) on the northern Persian Gulf and its territory encompasses the Mesopotamian Alluvial Plain, the northwestern end of the Zagros mountain range, and the eastern part of the Syrian Desert. Two major rivers, the Tigris and Euphrates, run south through the centre of Iraq and flow into the Shatt al-Arab near the Persian Gulf. These rivers provide Iraq with significant amounts of fertile land.

Today, the fifth anniversary of the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq, the museum is still struggling to rebuild its vast collections after being looted in 2003. But even once the latest round of renovations is complete in a few months, officials say the museum will still be too wrecked to reopen, the Associated Press reported. ''We are not planning to open,'' Bahaa Mayah, adviser to Iraq's Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, said at an international conference in Athens, Greece.

Seven years ago, in the chaos that followed the US invasion of Iraq and the fall of Saddam Hussein, looters ransacked Iraq's National Museum. Donny George Youkhanna, at the time the museum's director general, witnessed the looting and is haunted by the memories. He fled Iraq in 2006 and has been teaching at a university outside New York City. More on the story of the sacking of the museum and its restoration from VOA's Bernard Shusman in New York.
The Iraq National Museum in Baghdad was looted in April 2003, shortly after the American-led forces took the city. An estimated 15,000 artifacts from the ancient civilizations of Babylon and Mesopotamia were stolen: culprits are believed to have included agents from the international antiquities market. About 7,000 artifacts taken from the museum have been returned since then, some as early as late April 2003. In January 2005, three cylinder seals were confiscated by US Customs and returned to Iraq. In December 2005, 36 artifacts were recovered from the Iraqi black market. The museum is still not open to the public, despite three formal re-openings. Italy’s National Research Center created a virtual exhibit of the museum and many of the archaeologiccal sites in Iraq. In November 2009, Goo...

Iraq's National Museum has reopened in the capital Baghdad after 12 years. The prime minister cut the ribbon at the opening ceremony welcoming visitors back for the first time since the US led coalition invasion in 2003. In a speech to reporters Haider al-Abadi promised to track down the Islamic State militants who were responsible for the destruction earlier this week of rare and ancient artifacts in the northern city of Mosul: "Those barbaric, criminal terrorists are trying to destroy the he… READ MORE : http://www.euronews.com/2015/03/01/iraq-s-national-museum-reopens-after-12-years What are the top stories today? US Looted Thousands of Iraq's Cultural Treasures. An Iraqi archaeologist and architect says the United States has stolen thousands of Iraq's cultural treasures during the war in the Arab nation. Some 35,000 small and large items are missing from the National Museum of Iraq, said Ihsan Fathi in an interview with RT earlier this week. He went on to say that huge amounts of documents representing historical importance that cannot be assigned a monetary value were taken by the US. Large amounts of currency have been also misappropriated. Everything that was stored in the Central and other banks was sent to the US without any documentation and now is kept in archives, the Iraqi archaeologist stated. In March, Assistant Director General for Culture at the United Nation Educational, Scientif...

*** A very interesting museum. Unfortunately you can only shoot outdoors. The Syrians have gathered in Damascus many historical treasures of their country. Whether this is really a good idea, to be seen. In any case, the visitor can the history of ...

Christian billionaire Steve Green, who is CEO of the Oklahoma-based Hobby Lobby corporation as well as the pioneer of the new museum, attempted to import the artifacts in 2011 when they were seized by US customs agents in Memphis upon entry to the US, according to the Daily Beast. English/Nat After a closure of about 10 years, the Iraq Museum has opened its doors to the public, with an exhibition displaying over 10-thousand ancient artefacts. The relics range from simple farming tools used around 6-thousand B-C, to colossal winged-bull statues that the Assyrians placed at their city gates to instil fear in enemies. The treasures were removed for safekeeping shortly before the outbreak of the 1991 Gulf War in which a U-S-led military mission ejected Iraqi troops from Kuwait. The museum had been closed ever since. Baghdad unveiled its national treasures on Saturday, when it reopened the Iraq Museum after a ten-year period of closure. The Iraqi government has been discussing reopening the museum for the last two years, saying the risk of airstrikes a...

A conference about the National Museum of Iraq before and during the war on Iraq by Dr. Munir Taha at Selecteum - Johann Sebastian Bach Hall.
The tragic looting of the Iraq National Museum in 2003 shocked cultural heritage professionals into action and led to the U.S. ratification of the 1954 Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict in 2009. Natural disasters, global climate change, and political instability also continue to place our cultural heritage at risk around the globe. As a response to these events, Minneapolis Institute of Arts curator and former military officer Cori Wegener founded the U.S. Committee of the Blue Shield in 2006. Part of an international network, USCBS is a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting cultural property during armed conflict and natural disasters. Wegener will provide a slide presentation about her experience with the Iraq National Museum...

The accidental discovery of single atom elements by a Phoenix-area cotton farmer in the 1970s may have opened the door to limitless free energy, a cure for AIDS and cancer, longevity, faster-than-light speeds, anti-gravity and much more, perhaps even inter-dimensional and time travel. But this discovery may precipitated new policies and even war in a struggle to gain control over this new technology? And, while this discovery has been startling to modern science, it appears to be nothing new. As stated in Ecclesiastes 1:9 (New International), "What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun." Today, several scholars have linked this amazing discovery to the mythology and legends of the far distant past, especially in ancient Mesopotami...
