In 2014, Islamic State militants swept into Western Iraq's Anbar Province, overrunning Iraqi security forces, enslaving minorities, and causing thousands to flee for their lives.
The jihadist group captured Iraq’s largest city, Mosul, and the cities of Ramadi and Fallujah, where hundreds of US troops died fighting the Islamic State’s predecessor.
Now, two years later, the Iraqi security forces, with help from Iranian-supported Shiite militias and US military advisors and warplanes, are fighting to take back towns and cities in Anbar, one battle at a time.
But it’s a difficult task: Anbar has been the crucible of Iraq’s insurgency, and is the country’s Sunni heartland — long marginalized by and hostile to the Shiite-led government in Baghdad.
VICE News embedded with Iraq’s Golden Division Special Forces unit as they fought their way into the villages surrounding the city of Hit, where they encountered ambushes, sniper fire, and tried to sort suspected Islamic State operatives and sympathizers from innocent Iraqi civilians.

Iraqi security forces recaptured a large part of the city of Ramadi this week in one of their most significant military victories over the Islamic State (IS) to date.
Backed by warplanes from the US-led coalition, Baghdad's troops have been fighting to secure territory around Ramadi, the capital of Iraq’s vast western province of Anbar, since it fell to IS in May.

RAMADI, IRAQ — The media channel of a Shia militia in Ramadi, Iraq has released a video showing Iraqi security forces clearing a house from bottom to top.
Yesterday we brought you the news of Iraqi forces raising their flag over the central government building in Ramadi.
The city fell to ISIS in May, but after weeks of intense fighting, the Iraqi government has recaptured the city. However, the city still needs to be cleared of retreating ISIS fighters. This dramatic video from the frontlines of Ramadi shows Iraqi forces going door to door to secure the city.
The next step in the fight to reclaim ISIS-held territories is already in the works. Air strikes lead the way in Fallujah and Mosul. Iraqi security forces are in position around Fallujah, a city that is more densely populated than Ramadi.
ISIS has controlled Fallujah longer than it held the capital city of Anbar province so pushing the terrorists out of there may be more difficult than the battle for Ramadi.

Iraqi security forces repelled an ISIS attack on Ramadi city center, in the Anbar province of Iraq, Tuesday. The special counter-terrorist unit then launched a counterattack on ISIS locations in Ramadi, with the support of fighters from local Sunni tribes. The Iraqi Army used assault rifles, motors and adapted Humvees in the counter-attack.

Iraqi forces have liberated the center of Fallujah and continue advancing to the last remaining north districts ISIS has run to. The city is expected to be fully liberated in the coming few days now that the center of the city and most well defended part has been liberated.

Fighting is raging between al Qaeda-backed militants and Iraq's security forces for control of two key cities in the embattled Anbar province, even as a deal was in place with Sunni tribesmen to fight alongside Iraqi police against the militant group.
The renewed violence in the Sunni province has raised concern about the stability of the government amid dueling claims by the terror group and security forces over who was in control of Falluja and Ramadi.
The Iraqi civil war never really ended it just went off the boil for a while. Last year, the heat was turned back to high, with the number of civilian deaths from political violence doubling to roughly 8,000 people over the previous year, the highest civilian death toll since at least 2008.
Security forces backed by tanks on battled militants in Iraq's Anbar province, where fighting has displaced thousands and sparked warnings of rights abuses and a worsening humanitarian crisis.
Some of the most significant fighting appeared to be in Falluja, where the U.S. military fought one of the bloodiest battles of the Iraq war, with militants planting al Qaeda flags on buildings.
Gunmen calling themselves the Islamic State of Iraq and Levant, formerly known as al Qaeda in Iraq, took to a stage before thousands of Sunnis following Friday prayers in Falluja.
"We call you to join us in our fight against the government of Nuri al-Maliki," one of the gunman said through a bullhorn.
Authorities say gunmen have attacked an Iraqi army barracks north of Baghdad, killing 12 soldiers meaning that the militant attacks are spreading beyond Anbar.
Human rights activists have condemned abuses by both government troops and insurgents in Iraq's Anbar province.
"Apparently unlawful methods of fighting by all sides have caused civilian casualties," Human Rights Watch said in a report.
The rights group criticised Iraqi forces and militants for carrying out attacks in residential areas.
It comes as troops prepare to launch a major assault against al-Qaeda-linked militants in the city of Falluja.

Our squadron was the 532nd ESFS and we did Quick Response Force missions. In 2014, Islamic State militants swept into Western Iraq's Anbar Province, overrunning Iraqi security forces, enslaving minorities, and causing thousands to flee for their lives.
The jihadist group captured Iraq’s largest city, Mosul, and the cities of Ramadi and Fallujah, where hundreds of US troops died fighting the Islamic State’s predecessor.
Now, two years later, the Iraqi security forces, with help from Iranian-supported Shiite militias and US military advisors and warplanes, are fighting to take back towns and cities in Anbar, one battle at a time.
But it’s a difficult task: Anbar has been the crucible of Iraq’s insurgency, and is the country’s Sunni heartland — long marginalized by and hostile to the Shiite-led government in Baghdad.

Some of the most significant fighting appeared to be in Falluja, where the U.S. military fought one of the bloodiest battles of the Iraq war, with militants planting al Qaeda flags on buildings.
Gunmen calling themselves the Islamic State of Iraq and Levant, formerly known as al Qaeda in Iraq, took to a stage before thousands of Sunnis following Friday prayers in Falluja.
"We call you to join us in our fight against the government of Nuri al-Maliki," one of the gunman said through a bullhorn.
Authorities say gunmen have attacked an Iraqi army barracks north of Baghdad, killing 12 soldiers meaning that the militant attacks are spreading beyond Anbar.
Human rights activists have condemned abuses by both government troops and insurgents in Iraq's Anbar province.
"Apparently unlawful methods of fighting by all sides have caused civilian casualties," Human Rights Watch said in a report.
The rights group criticised Iraqi forces and militants for carrying out attacks in residential areas.
It comes as troops prepare to launch a major assault against al-Qaeda-linked militants in the city of Falluja.

I am making 4 or so videos of our time in training and in Balad, Iraq. It was a pretty fun time there, and we did outside the wire missions with the Army doing Patrols. Our squadron was the 532nd ESFS and we did Quick Response Force missions. I would like to hear what you think of it, although if you sit there and start making some arguements of the war, I will just delete the comment. Thank you and p.s. all these videos are of us, not another squadron or team

Iraqi PM to Mosul residents: Victory is near
Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi has pledged to liberate the flashpoint city of Mosul from Daesh Takfiri terrorists. He says the victory is near. Abadi made the remarks in a radio address to residents of the city which has been under Daesh occupation since 2014. Abadi also called on Mosul residents to cooperate with the Iraqi security forces. Iraq has not announced a date for the start of the operation to retake the city, but Western officials have indicated it could begin this month. The United Nations has warned that nearly one million people could be displaced by the clashes. A local source in Kirkuk province said that Daesh executed three of its commanders for fleeing battles in Shirqat. After the district was liberated by Iraqi security forces on Thursday, most of the terrorists escaped to nearby Daesh stronghold of Hawijah, where Daesh carried out the executions. For his part, secretary General of Badr organisation, Hadi al-Ameri stressed after a meeting with Peshmerga leaders, that Hashed forces are ready to cooperate with the Peshmerga and tribesmen of Kirkuk province to liberated the district of Hawijah from Daesh control.

Iraqi security forces retake Shirqat from ISIL
Iraqi security forces have retaken control of a government compound in Shirqat from ISIL militants, as a stepping stone in the campaign to recapture the armed group’s stronghold of Mosul. The operation was launched on Tuesday, backed by mostly Shiite paramilitary and air support from the US-led coalition. Shirqat lies some 280 kilometers north of the Iraqi capital of Baghdad. Tens of thousands of civilians are thought to have been trapped in Shirqat and its surrounding villages, which have been under ISIL control since the group seized a third of Iraqi territory in 2014. Soon afterward, the group declared the establishment of a dubious "caliphate" in the area it controls and rebranded itself the Islamic State. With Iraq's army weakened and radical militants advancing on Baghdad, the country's Iran-backed Shia militias — which have their own history of sectarian abuses — fought back, halting the Islamic State's progress.
The militias have successfully combated Islamic State fighters on the ground with the assistance of air strikes from a US-led military coalition. But their growing influence within Iraq's government amid accusations that they have harmed Sunnis in areas that they control has led many to fear that the militias threaten the country's fragile sectarian and political balance.
VICE News traveled to Iraq in December to witness firsthand how Shia militias are taking the fight to the Islamic State, and to document the fallout of their controversial rise to power.

Despite a score of territorial defeats, the IS still controls large swathes of Iraqi territory in the country's north and west, including its second largest city of Mosul.

Ruptly will provide LIVE from the outskirts of Fallujah on Tuesday, May 31, as Iraqi armed forces attempt to advance into the city, which was captured by the so-called Islamic State [IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL] in 2014.
The military forces of the Iraqi government initially launched the operation to retake the IS-held city of Fallujah on May 23, following an announcement by the Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Al-Abadi.
Fallujah, about 40 miles (78 km) west of Baghdad, was the first Iraqi city to be taken by IS in January 2014. Up to 75,000 civilians have been trapped inside the city, caught between the IS and armed forces, including the Iraqi army and allied militias.
Iraqi security forces repeated calls for civilians in Fallujah to flee on May 22, but locals say they have been unable to escape. Despite a score of territorial defeats, the IS still controls large swathes of Iraqi territory in the country's north and west, including its second largest city of Mosul.
