Religion is a cultural system of behaviors and practices, world views, ethics, and social organisation that relate humanity to an order of existence. About 84% of the world's population is affiliated with one of the five largest religions, namely Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism or forms of folk religion.
With the onset of the modernisation of and the scientific revolution in the western world, some aspects of religion have cumulatively been criticized. Though the religiously unaffliated, including atheism and agnosticism, have grown globally, many of the unaffiliated still have various religious beliefs. About 16% of the world's population is religiously unaffiliated.
The study of religion encompasses a wide variety of academic disciplines, including comparative religion and social scientific studies. Theories of religion offer explanations for the origins and workings of religion.
Religion (from O.Fr. religion "religious community", from L. religionem (nom. religio) "respect for what is sacred, reverence for the gods", "obligation, the bond between man and the gods") is derived from the Latin religiō, the ultimate origins of which are obscure. One possibility is an interpretation traced to Cicero, connecting lego "read", i.e. re (again) + lego in the sense of "choose", "go over again" or "consider carefully". Modern scholars such as Tom Harpur and Joseph Campbell favor the derivation from ligare "bind, connect", probably from a prefixed re-ligare, i.e. re (again) + ligare or "to reconnect", which was made prominent by St. Augustine, following the interpretation of Lactantius. The medieval usage alternates with order in designating bonded communities like those of monastic orders: "we hear of the 'religion' of the Golden Fleece, of a knight 'of the religion of Avys'".

Read your free e-book: http://downloadapp.us/mebk/50/en/B01B8HJKRC/book Prevailing stories about law and religion place great faith in the capacity of legal multiculturalism, rights-based toleration, and conceptions of the secular to manage issues raised by religious difference. Yet the relationship between law and religion consistently proves more fraught than such accounts suggest. In Laws Religion, Benjamin L. Berger knocks law from its perch above culture, arguing that liberal constitutionalism is an aspect of, not an answer to, the challenges of cultural pluralism. Berger urges an approach to the study of law and religion that focuses on the experience of law as a potent cultural force.based on a close reading of Canadian jurisprudence, but relevant to all liberal legal orders, this b...

The evolutionary origin of religions theorizes about the emergence of religious behavior during the course of human evolution. Humanity's closest living relatives are common chimpanzees and bonobos. These primates share a common ancestor with humans who lived between four and six million years ago. It is for this reason that chimpanzees and bonobos are viewed as the best available surrogate for this common ancestor. Barbara King argues that while non-human primates are not religious, they do exhibit some traits that would have been necessary for the evolution of religion. These traits include high intelligence, a capacity for symbolic communication, a sense of social norms, realization of "self" and a concept of continuity. There is inconclusive evidence that Homo neanderthalensis may hav...

Nicky Campbell presides over a special debate asking just one big question - does evidence undermine religion? Recorded at The Harris Academy Peckham, London.
Zeba Khan and Maajid Nawaz debate against Ayaan Hirsi Ali and Douglas Murray to try and prove that Islam is a religion of peace. Spoiler alert: they fail miserably, and that''s not just my bias, that's how the audience actually felt. The only thing Zeba and Maajid proved was that they wish and hope that Islam will become a religion of peace. Note: The only parts cut from the debate were the long introduction before the moderator first starts speaking and instances where the moderator repeated the name of the debate and all the debaters, which he did several times. You will see a cut at about 52 minutes in where Maajid is just finishing a sentence. Nothing that he said was cut. After he says "camp" the video cut to the audience and the moderator started announcing the debate information ...
They are fighting on islands.
They are fighting at sea.
They are fighting for justice.
They are fighting for me.
I'm not a believer.
Thank God for that.
They try to use me as a receiver
for their useless chat.
The root of all evil
is what we have in mind.
I don't know what
they are trying to find.
Maybe the creator of Adam and Eve.
But why in hell must they hate
each others beliefs.
Roots of all evil.
The roots of our minds.
Religion, religion.
One man is for heaven,
the other represents hell.
And they start to fight
when they ring the bell.
Don't think I'm watching
this senseless game.
For me and my soul
they do just the same.
Roots of all evil.
The roots of our minds.
Religion, religion.

Light:

Knight:
is the title of the man who does the killing work.
People are ruined
by the collecting man.
And the money finances a plan.
The meaning of his message is to get
you signed on their list of hired minds.
Roots of all evil.
The roots of our minds.
Religion, religion.
Black:
is the collar of the priest and his voice.
Light:
is the force he wants to praise.
Knight:
is the title of the man who does the killing work.
Why can't they be satisfied
with their work with souls?
Why must the money take control?
The priests are all waiting
for the final cut of the universe.
Roots of all evil.
The roots of our minds.
