Mal connu en occident et redécouvert à la faveur des disciplines qui s’en inspirent, le taoïsme est un grand courant de pensée qui imprègne depuis l’Antiquité toute la culture chinoise. Il a donné corps à une religion ritualiste, fondée sur le culte du mythique Lao-tseu, philosophe fait dieu.
Deux termes en chinois correspondent au mot taoïsme en français : « daojia » et « daojiao », littéralement « famille de la Voie » et « enseignement de la Voie ». Le premier désigne le taoïsme philosophique associé aux livres de Lao-tseu et de Tchouang-tseu, dont l’essentiel remonte au IV ème siècle avant notre ère. Le second se réfère au taoïsme religieux qui débute comme mouvement sectaire au II ème siècle. Ce mouvement, souvent appelé « Voie des Maîtres célestes » préconisait la récitation du seul texte de Lao-tseu.

Les pratiques
Les nombreuses pratiques, tant psychiques que corporelles, visent toutes à parvenir à l’Unité. Le sage qui a réussi à se fondre dans le Tao devient un immortel (hsien) et rejoint la cohorte des dieux.
La préparation spirituelle :
L’adepte taoïste doit cultiver la vertu, le te, synonyme de modestie, d’humilité, de tolérance et d’altruisme. Elle se manifeste par la poursuite du wou wei, art du non-agir, qui doit être compris comme le choix de « ne pas intervenir dans le cours naturel des choses ». Le croyant doit vider son esprit de toute notion et de toute passion, se libérer de tout lien terrestre pour se retourner à l’authenticité naturelle. « L’alchimie intérieure » (nei tan) est l’outil principal du développement spirituel du pratiquant. Forme de méditation, elle lui permet de se purifier intérieurement pour atteindre l’envol mystique. Elle utilise des techniques de rétention du souffle (qi ou tchi) afin de transformer l’organisme en un corps immortel.
La préparation physique :
Les pratiques dites « de Longue Vie » sont censées donner l’énergie nécessaire pour parvenir à l’immortalité physique. Elles sont d’ordres différents :
Ésotérisme (alchimie (wai tan) qui consiste à boire un élixir à base de cinabre ou de jade dans des coupes en or),
Alimentation (consommation d’aliments et d’herbes médicinales contenant des « énergies » pour nourrir les organes habités par des dieux mais aussi par des démons, les « Trois Vers »),
Gymnastique (Qi Gong ou Kong Fu, Tai Chi Tchuan, Hsing Yi Tchuan, Pa Koua Tchang),
Sexualité (effectuer l’acte sexuel sans éjaculation pour éviter la dispersion de l’énergie vitale),
Médecine (massothérapie, héliothérapie, acupuncture).

Religion
Religion is a cultural system of behaviors and practices, world views, ethics, and social organisation that relate humanity to an order of existence. About 84% of the world's population is affiliated with one of the five largest religions, namely Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism or forms of folk religion.
With the onset of the modernisation of and the scientific revolution in the western world, some aspects of religion have cumulatively been criticized. Though the religiously unaffliated, including atheism and agnosticism, have grown globally, many of the unaffiliated still have various religious beliefs. About 16% of the world's population is religiously unaffiliated.
The study of religion encompasses a wide variety of academic disciplines, including comparative religion and social scientific studies. Theories of religion offer explanations for the origins and workings of religion.
Etymology
Religion
Religion (from O.Fr. religion "religious community", from L. religionem (nom. religio) "respect for what is sacred, reverence for the gods", "obligation, the bond between man and the gods") is derived from the Latin religiō, the ultimate origins of which are obscure. One possibility is an interpretation traced to Cicero, connecting lego "read", i.e. re (again) + lego in the sense of "choose", "go over again" or "consider carefully". Modern scholars such as Tom Harpur and Joseph Campbell favor the derivation from ligare "bind, connect", probably from a prefixed re-ligare, i.e. re (again) + ligare or "to reconnect", which was made prominent by St. Augustine, following the interpretation of Lactantius. The medieval usage alternates with order in designating bonded communities like those of monastic orders: "we hear of the 'religion' of the Golden Fleece, of a knight 'of the religion of Avys'".

Mal connu en occident et redécouvert à la faveur des disciplines qui s’en inspirent, le taoïsme est un grand courant de pensée qui imprègne depuis l’Antiquité toute la culture chinoise. Il a donné corps à une religion ritualiste, fondée sur le culte du mythique Lao-tseu, philosophe fait dieu.
Deux termes en chinois correspondent au mot taoïsme en français : « daojia » et « daojiao », littéralement « famille de la Voie » et « enseignement de la Voie ». Le premier désigne le taoïsme philosophique associé aux livres de Lao-tseu et de Tchouang-tseu, dont l’essentiel remonte au IV ème siècle avant notre ère. Le second se réfère au taoïsme religieux qui débute comme mouvement sectaire au II ème siècle. Ce mouvement, souvent appelé « Voie des Maîtres célestes » préconisait la récitation du seul texte de Lao-tseu.

Les nombreuses pratiques, tant psychiques que corporelles, visent toutes à parvenir à l’Unité. Le sage qui a réussi à se fondre dans le Tao devient un immortel (hsien) et rejoint la cohorte des dieux.
La préparation spirituelle :
L’adepte taoïste doit cultiver la vertu, le te, synonyme de modestie, d’humilité, de tolérance et d’altruisme. Elle se manifeste par la poursuite du wou wei, art du non-agir, qui doit être compris comme le choix de « ne pas intervenir dans le cours naturel des choses ». Le croyant doit vider son esprit de toute notion et de toute passion, se libérer de tout lien terrestre pour se retourner à l’authenticité naturelle. « L’alchimie intérieure » (nei tan) est l’outil principal du développement spirituel du pratiquant. Forme de méditation, elle lui permet de se purifier intérieurement pour atteindre l’envol mystique. Elle utilise des techniques de rétention du souffle (qi ou tchi) afin de transformer l’organisme en un corps immortel.
La préparation physique :
Les pratiques dites « de Longue Vie » sont censées donner l’énergie nécessaire pour parvenir à l’immortalité physique. Elles sont d’ordres différents :

Humanity's closest living relatives are common chimpanzees and bonobos. These primates share a common ancestor with humans who lived between four and six million years ago. It is for this reason that chimpanzees and bonobos are viewed as the best available surrogate for this common ancestor. Barbara King argues that while non-human primates are not religious, they do exhibit some traits that would have been necessary for the evolution of religion. These traits include high intelligence, a capacity for symbolic communication, a sense of social norms, realization of "self" and a concept of continuity. There is inconclusive evidence that Homo neanderthalensis may have buried their dead which is evidence of the use of ritual. The use of burial rituals is evidence of religious activity, but there is no other evidence that religion existed in human culture before humans reached behavioral modernity.
Marc Bekoff, Professor Emeritus of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Colorado, Boulder, argues that many species grieve death and loss.
There is general agreement among cognitive scientists that religion is an outgrowth of brain architecture that evolved early in human history. However, there is disagreement on the exact mechanisms that drove the evolution of the religious mind. The two main schools of thought hold that either religion evolved due to natural selection and has selective advantage, or that religion is an evolutionary byproduct of other mental adaptations. Stephen Jay Gould, for example, believed that religion was an exaptation or a spandrel, in other words that religion evolved as byproduct of psychological mechanisms that evolved for other reasons.
Such mechanisms may include the ability to infer the presence of organisms that might do harm (agent detection), the ability to come up with causal narratives for natural events (etiology), and the ability to recognize that other people have minds of their own with their own beliefs, desires and intentions (theory of mind).
