1959 was the seismic year jazz broke away from complex bebop music to new forms, allowing soloists unprecedented freedom to explore and express. It was also a pivotal year for America: the nation was finding its groove, enjoying undreamt-of freedom and wealth social, racial and upheavals were just around the corner and jazz was ahead of the curve.
Four major jazz albums were made, each a high watermark for the artists and a powerful reflection of the times. Each opened up dramatic new possibilities for jazz which continue to be felt Miles Davis Kind of Blue Dave Brubeck, Time Out Charles Mingus, Mingus Ah Um; and Ornette Coleman, The Shape of Jazz to Come.
Rarely seen archive performances help vibrantly bring the era to life and explore what made these albums vital both in 1959 and the 50 years since. The programme contains interviews with Lou Reed, Dave Brubeck, Ornette Coleman, Charlie Haden, Herbie Hancock, Joe Morello (Brubecks drummer) and Jimmy Cobb (the only surviving member of Miles band) along with a host of jazz movers and shakers from the 50s and beyond.

IIHS 50th anniversary demonstration test • September 9, 2009
In the 50 years since US insurers organized the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, car crashworthiness has improved. Demonstrating this was a crash test conducted between a 1959 Chevrolet Bel Air and a 2009 Chevrolet Malibu. In a real-world collision similar to this test, occupants of the new model would fare much better than in the vintage Chevy.
"It was night and day, the difference in occupant protection," says Institute president Adrian Lund. "What this test shows is that automakers don't build cars like they used to. They build them better."
The crash test was conducted at an event to celebrate the contributions of auto insurers to highway safety progress over 50 years. Beginning with the Institute's 1959 founding, insurers have maintained the resolve, articulated in the 1950s, to "conduct, sponsor, and encourage programs designed to aid in the conservation and preservation of life and property from the hazards of highway accidents."

Jay Leno
James Douglas Muir "Jay" Leno (/ˈlɛnoʊ/; born April 28, 1950) is an American comedian, actor, writer, producer, voice actor, and television host. He was the host of NBC's The Tonight Show with Jay Leno from 1992 to 2009. Beginning in September 2009, Leno started a primetime talk show, titled The Jay Leno Show, which aired weeknights at 10:00 p.m. ET, also on NBC.
After The Jay Leno Show was canceled in January 2010 amid a host controversy, Leno returned to host The Tonight Show with Jay Leno on March 1, 2010. He hosted his last episode of The Tonight Show on February 6, 2014. That year, he was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame.
Early life
Leno was born in New Rochelle, New York. His homemaker mother, Catherine (née Muir; 1911–1993), was born in Greenock, Scotland, and came to the United States at age 11. His father, Angelo (1910–1994), was an insurance salesman who was born in New York, to immigrants from Flumeri, Italy. Leno grew up in Andover, Massachusetts, and obtained a bachelor's degree in speech therapy from Emerson College, where he started a comedy club in 1973. His older brother, Patrick (May 12, 1940 – October 6, 2002), was a Vietnam War veteran who worked as an attorney.

Demonstrating this was a crash test conducted between a 1959 Chevrolet Bel Air and a 2009 Chevrolet Malibu. In a real-world collision similar to this test, occupants of the new model would fare much better than in the vintage Chevy. "It was night and day, the difference in occupant protection," says Institute president Adrian Lund. "What this test shows is that automakers don't build cars like they used to. 经典老电影 烈火真金 1959 Old Chinese Movie 烈火真金由周兆琪导演，上映于1959。由八一电影制片厂（中国）拍摄。 1958年秋天，我人民解放军福建前线部队开始严惩盘踞在金门岛上的国民党军队。激战之中，敌人的一发炮弹突然落在了我军的炮兵阵地上，炸塌了弹药库，烈火蔓延向炮床。战士王志强为了抢救大炮，冲进火海，发射出最后一发炮弹，命中了敌人的运输舰。王志强负伤，被送进医院。诊断结果，他全身被烧伤的面积达80%，伤势异常严重。医院党委召开会议研究治疗方案，地委书记亲自布置抢救方案，许多互不相识的人都来自愿献血。一个中年妇女抢先来到血库，要求献血。原来，在一次空袭中，王志强用自己的身体掩护了她的女儿，使孩子得以幸免。王志强失血过多，昏迷不醒。杨军医、刘护士长和护士江玲守护在床边，精心护理他，终于使王志强度过了危险期。他醒过来的第一句话是“我要立刻到阵地上去”。换药对他来说，是一个严重的考验，王志强咬紧牙关，哼唱出了“我是一个兵”，用歌声打消了医务人员的顾虑。他的伤口感染了绿脓杆菌，需要植皮，需要噬菌体。结果，光是志愿献皮者就来了236人。三个工人同志的皮肤移植到了王志强的手上。两只手治好了，绿脓杆菌又感染了他的全身，杨军医用紫外线灯为他治疗，北京解放军总后勤部派飞机送来了噬菌体。王志强在广大人民群众的鼓舞下，以吴运铎、无脚飞将军为榜样，积极地锻炼，终于战胜了病魔，勇敢地站了起来，他恢复了健康，重新返回了前线。
