Barclays /ˈbɑːkliz/ is a British multinational banking and financial services company headquartered in London. It is a universal bank with operations in retail, wholesale and investment banking, as well as wealth management, mortgage lending and credit cards. It has operations in over 50 countries and territories and has around 48 million customers. As of 31 December 2011 Barclays had total assets of US$2.42 trillion, the seventh-largest of any bank worldwide.
Barclays is organised into four core business: Personal & Corporate (Personal Banking, Corporate Banking, Wealth & Investment Management), Barclaycard, Investment Banking and Africa.
Barclays traces its origins to a goldsmith banking business established in the City of London in 1690. James Barclay became a partner in the business in 1736. In 1896 several banks in London and the English provinces, including Backhouse's Bank and Gurney's Bank, united as a joint-stock bank under the name Barclays and Co. Over the following decades Barclays expanded to become a nationwide bank. In 1967, Barclays deployed the world's first cash dispenser. Barclays has made numerous corporate acquisitions, including of London, Provincial and South Western Bank in 1918, British Linen Bank in 1919, Mercantile Credit in 1975, the Woolwich in 2000 and the North American operations of Lehman Brothers in 2008.

Barclays PLC, the majority shareholder in Barclays Africa, will be exiting the African market in three years. Technically, Barclays PLC will transform into a transatlantic lender after fully exiting the African operation which it describes as a costly destruction. But according to Africa's managing director, Maria Ramos, the exit plan will in no way impact on the African business, Kenya included.
Staying with earnings reports, U.k. banking giant, Barclays plc, represented locally by market leader Barclays bank of Kenya, has reported a 92 percent jump in full year 2009 profits. The bank made 18.2 billion dollars, the Kenya shilling equivalent of 1.4 trillion in untaxed profit for the year.

Ragavan Bala, managing director of real estate investment banking group and head of real estate mergers and acquisitions (M&A;) at Barclays PLC, joined REIT.com for a video interview at REITWeek 2016: NAREIT’s Investor Forum at the Waldorf Astoria New York. Bala noted that REIT M&A; activity levels are generally consistent with the last couple of years, but the type of activity has changed. Citicorp, JPMorgan Chase & Co., Barclays PLC, and The Royal Bank of Scotland plc have agreed to plead guilty to conspiring to manipulate the price of U.S. dollars and euros exchanged in the foreign currency exchange (FX) spot market and the banks have agreed to pay criminal fines totaling more than $2.5 billion. A fifth bank, UBS AG, has agreed to plead guilty to manipulating the London Interbank Offered Rate (LIBOR) and other benchmark interest rates and pay a $203 million criminal penalty, after breaching its December 2012 non-prosecution agreement resolving the LIBOR investigation.
