Fifth Fleet or 5th fleet may mean:
A carrier strike group (CSG) is an operational formation of the United States Navy. It is composed of roughly 7,500 personnel, an aircraft carrier, at least one cruiser, a destroyer squadron of at least two destroyers and/or frigates, and a carrier air wing of 65 to 70 aircraft. A carrier strike group also, on occasion, includes submarines, attached logistics ships and a supply ship. The carrier strike group commander operationally reports to the commander of the numbered fleet, who is operationally responsible for the area of waters in which the carrier strike group is operating.
Carrier strike groups comprise a principal element of U.S. power projection capability. Previously referred to as Carrier Battle Groups (a term still used by other nations), they are often referred to by the carrier they are associated with (e.g., Enterprise Strike Group). There are currently 10 carrier strike groups.
The carrier strike group is a flexible naval force that can operate in confined waters or in the open ocean, during day and night, in all weather conditions. The principal role of the carrier and its air wing within the carrier strike group is to provide the primary offensive firepower, while the other ships provide defense and support. These roles are not exclusive, however. Other ships in the strike group sometimes undertake offensive operations (launching cruise missiles, for instance) and the carrier's air wing contributes to the strike group's defense (through combat air patrols and airborne anti-submarine efforts). Thus, from a command and control perspective, carrier strike groups are combat organized by mission rather than by platform.
Fleet may refer to:
A fleet is a collection of ships or vehicles, with many specific connotations:
A fleet is a saline waterway found in river marshes:
Fleet is found in place names:
Carl Vinson (November 18, 1883 – June 1, 1981) was a United States Representative from Georgia. He was a Democrat and served for more than 50 years in the United States House of Representatives. He was known as "The Father of the Two-Ocean Navy".
Vinson was born in Fulton County, Georgia, attended Georgia Military College, and graduated with a law degree from Mercer University in 1902. He was elected to the Georgia House of Representatives in 1908. After losing a third term following redistricting, he was appointed judge of the Baldwin County court, but following the sudden death of Senator Augustus Bacon, Representative Thomas W. Hardwick of Georgia's 10th congressional district was nominated to fill Bacon's Senate seat and Vinson announced his candidacy for Hardwick's seat in Congress. Vinson won over three opponents. He was the youngest member of Congress (30 years old) when he was sworn in on November 3, 1914.
The Fifth Fleet of the United States Navy is responsible for naval forces in the Persian Gulf, Red Sea, Arabian Sea, and parts of the Indian Ocean. It shares a commander and headquarters with U.S. Naval Forces Central Command (NAVCENT). As of 2015, the commander of the 5th Fleet is Vice Admiral Kevin M. Donegan. Fifth Fleet/NAVCENT is a component command of, and reports to, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM).
Established in 1944, the Fifth Fleet conducted extensive operations against Japanese forces in the Central Pacific during World War II. World War II ended in 1945, and the Fifth Fleet was deactivated in 1947. It remained inactive until 1995, when it was reactivated and assumed its current responsibilities.
The Fifth Fleet was initially established during World War II on 26 April 1944 from the Central Pacific Force under the command of Admiral Raymond Spruance. Central Pacific Force was itself part of Pacific Ocean Areas. The ships of the Fifth Fleet also formed the basis of the Third Fleet, which was the designation of the "Big Blue Fleet" when under the command of Admiral William F. Halsey, Jr.. Spruance and Halsey would alternate command of the fleet for major operations, allowing the other admiral and his staff time to prepare for the subsequent one. A secondary benefit was confusing the Japanese into thinking that they were actually two separate fleets as the fleet designation flipped back and forth.

The US Fifth Fleet is a major US naval base which is anchored off Bahrain. It provides protection to the Bahraini royal family and also ensures US dominance of the Persian Gulf, one of the world's major energy producing areas and transit routes. What is the strategic importance of the US Fifth Fleet to the Americans and the Bahrainis? What effect does it have on neighboring countries? We will also cover the weekly news events in this episode which will be determined by the news agenda, but it is likely that we will look ahead to the second anniversary of the Bahraini revolution on February 14. Just a few hours of riding in the Persian Gulf on one of these twin diesel 2000 horse power Navy Riverine Command Boats can leave the uninitiated sea sick, and sore for days, as these 49 foot "multi mission platforms" wrestle with the sea swells of open water. Open sea water, often referred to by Sailors as "blue-water," is an unconventional environment to operate a 'riverine' boat — keyword being 'river.' These extremely fast, armed crafts crewed by approximately eight sailors can perform a wide range of missions and have the capacity to carry special forces or small U.S. Marine units into coastal waters where larger warships simply cannot - making them a highly versatile asset. US Navy World War II aerial combat action. Fifth fleet aircraft carrier based planes strike Japanese ships, planes, airfields and other land targets in the Ryukyu Islands (presumably Okinawa island). The Chinese Fleet is destroyed. The 5th Fleet moves to finish it's greatest foe, the Russian Battle Group.
I loaded up, got in, and found myself bouding long ass distances to find myself a lost squad. This was my first deployment on the 5th fleet server on arma 3. It ended up being one of the most chaotic battles i've been a part of in milsim, in a very long time. Our objective was to clear the town and then take back the FOB on top of that hill.
