Wide top shot of Shiite parade STORYLINE Thousands of Shiites gathered at ceremonies across the Muslim world on Saturday, to mark the annual festival of Ashura, in which Shiites mourn the death of Imam Hussein, the grandson of Islam's prophet Muhammad. Imam Hussein died in a battle in 680 against the leader of what became the Sunni branch of Islam. The battle took place in Karbala, which is located in present day Iraq. Security was especially tight as hundreds of thousands of Shiites beat their heads and chests in unison and whipped themselves with chains in Karbala, with 30-thousand policemen and soldiers deployed in the city, including reinforcements from Baghdad. Afghan Shiite Muslims also celebrated the festival by flagellating themselves. Most of the Ashura rituals involve public expressions of grief with Shiite Muslims flagellating themselves with chains and beating drums. During Ashura celebrations, Afghan President Hamid Karzai called for a "movement against those who are defaming Islam and killing Muslims." "I express my condolences to all the people on this mourning day and I hope today's mourning will bring a movement for our future," said Karzai. Iranians also took to the street in Tehran. The parade was protected by a massive police security operation.
