Syria (i/ˈsɪ.rɪə/; Arabic: سوريا or سورية, Sūriyā or Sūrīyah), officially the Syrian Arab Republic, is a country in Western Asia. De jure Syrian territory borders Lebanon and the Mediterranean Sea to the west, Turkey to the north, Iraq to the east, Jordan to the south, and Israel to the southwest, but the government's control now extends to approximately 30–40% of the de jure state area and less than 60% of the population.
A country of fertile plains, high mountains, and deserts, Syria is home to diverse ethnic and religious groups, including Syrian Arabs, Greeks, Armenians, Assyrians, Kurds, Circassians,Mandeans and Turks. Religious groups include Sunnis, Christians, Alawites, Druze, Mandeans, Shiites, Salafis, and Yazidis. Sunni Arabs make up the largest population group in Syria.
In English, the name "Syria" was formerly synonymous with the Levant (known in Arabic as al-Sham), while the modern state encompasses the sites of several ancient kingdoms and empires, including the Eblan civilization of the 3rd millennium BC. Its capital Damascus is among the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. In the Islamic era, Damascus was the seat of the Umayyad Caliphate and a provincial capital of the Mamluk Sultanate in Egypt.
The Kurds (Kurdish: کورد Kurd) are an ethnic group in the Middle East, mostly inhabiting a contiguous area spanning adjacent parts of eastern and southeastern Turkey (Northern Kurdistan), western Iran (Eastern or Iranian Kurdistan), northern Iraq (Southern or Iraqi Kurdistan), and northern Syria (Western Kurdistan or Rojava). The Kurds have ethnically diverse origins. They are culturally and linguistically closely related to the Iranian peoples and, as a result, are often themselves classified as an Iranian people.Kurdish nationalists claim that the Kurds are descended from the Hurrians and the Medes, (the latter being another Iranian people) and the claimed Median descent is reflected in the words of the Kurdish national anthem: "we are the children of the Medes and Kai Khosrow". The Kurdish languages form a subgroup of the Northwestern Iranian languages.
The Kurds are estimated to number, worldwide, around 30–32 million, possibly as high as 37 million, with the majority living in West Asia; however there are significant Kurdish diaspora communities in the cities of western Turkey, in particular Istanbul. A recent Kurdish diaspora has also developed in Western countries, primarily in Germany. The Kurds are the majority population in the autonomous region of Iraqi Kurdistan and in the autonomous region of Rojava, and are a significant minority group in the neighboring countries Turkey and Iran, where Kurdish nationalist movements continue to pursue greater autonomy and cultural rights.
Islamic state is a type of government based on Islamic religious law (sharia).
Islamic state may also refer to:
Kurds in Syria refers to people born in or residing in Syria who are of Kurdish origin. The Kurds are the largest ethnic minority in Syria, comprising less than 10% of the country's population according to the CIA, or 10 to 15 according to Minority Rights Group International. Syrian Kurds have faced routine discrimination and harassment by the government.
"Syrian Kurdistan" (Kurdish: Kurdistana Sûriyê) is an unofficial name used by some to describe the Kurdish inhabited regions of northern and northeastern Syria. The northeastern Kurdish inhabited region covers the greater part of Hasakah Governorate. The main cities in this region are Al-Qamishli and Al-Hasakah. Another region with significant Kurdish population is Kobanî (officially known as Ayn al-Arab) in the northern part of Syria near the town of Jarabulus and also the city of Afrin and its surroundings along the Turkish border.
Many Kurds seek political autonomy for the Kurdish inhabited areas of Syria, similar to Iraqi Kurdistan in Iraq, or outright independence as part of Kurdistan. The name Rojava (Kurdish: Rojavayê Kurdistanê) is also used by Kurds to name the Syrian Kurdish inhabited areas in relation to Kurdistan. Since the Syrian Civil War, Syrian government forces have abandoned many Kurdish-populated areas, leaving the Kurds to fill the power vacuum and govern these areas autonomously.

Clashes between the Turks and Kurds intensified last week, after Turkey began a large-scale military operation against Islamic State in the Syrian border town of Jarabulus. Recently, the US stated that a ceasefire exists between Turkey and the Kurds – something Ankara denies. RT correspondent Gayane Chichakyan has the story. Turkey's Foreign Minister says the operation in Jarablus is part of a goal to what he calls "completely cleanse" fighters with the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS) from its border region. But Turkish leaders are also concerned about the growing Kurdish influence in northern Syria. Syria has been at war now for five years. And in that time, the Kurdish Democratic Union Party or PYD, and its armed wing the YPG, have skillfully gained control of almost the entire northern stretch of the country. An area the Kurds call Rojava. Aided by US material support and air-strikes, they are seen as a key ally in the fight against ISIL. But the Kurds of Syria have been frustrated, as their victories on the battlefield have not translated into political gains. Shut out of UN-brokered peace talks in Geneva, they have chosen to go it alone. Declaring their intention to establish a federal Kurdish region in northern Syria. The Kurds say they are not pushing for independence. Rather, for a decentralised, federal model to be applied throughout Syria. But their plan is running into ...

Travel video about destination Palmyra in Syria. Set amid the desert savannah of Syria are the proud remains of the unique and mysterious metropolis of Palmyra. The legendary ancient city was built in this vicinity due to the existence of an oasis, Tadmur, and today around thirty thousand people live in the surrounding area. The shortest and fastest route from the Mediterranean to Mesopotamia and Persia travels directly past the Tadmur Oasis thus it was only a question of time until an important trading post was founded there and later a flourishing cultural and economic centre developed. Close to the former Agora, the central square in which the city’s inhabitants held their weekly market since the first century A.D., is one of Palmyra’s architectural landmarks, the Tetrapylon. Take a tour of Ancient City of Bosra in Bosra, Syrian Arab Republic -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats. The half-standing ruins of this dark-stoned city rise out of the southern Syrian landscape. Nearly deserted today, Bosra has a great deal of history from thousands of years of habitation by different cultures. The city is at least old enough to have appeared in historical documents from the fourteenth century BC. Early in the first millennium AD, Bosra became a part of the Roman Empire, which is the strongest influence seen at work in the ruins. Since then, it has been the territory of the Byzantine Empire and the Arabs who swept in during the seventh century. Among the ruined city's Roman and Christian structures, the fortified...

An award-winning Israeli documentary by Itai Anghel about the war led by Kurds against Islamic State (ISIS/ISIL) in Syria and Iraq. Kurdish freedomfighters, both female and male, from YPG, YPJ, PKK and Peshmerga are the most successful and efficient warriors against the medieval terrorists from the so called Islamic State. Kurds want to set up a liberal, feminist and direct democratic state called Kurdistan, their traditional homeland, in the Middle East. But they are currently brutally opressed and prevented by either dictatorial states like Syria and Iraq or islamist like Turkey and Iran from fulfilling their dream.
