Glasgow (/ˈɡlɑːzɡoʊ, ˈɡlæ-, -s-/ GLA(H)Z-goh, GLA(H)S-goh;Scots: Glesga; Scottish Gaelic: Glaschu [ˈkl̪ˠas̪xu]) is the largest city in Scotland, and the third largest in the United Kingdom (after London and Birmingham). Historically part of Lanarkshire, it is situated on the River Clyde in the country's West Central Lowlands. Inhabitants of the city are referred to as Glaswegians.
Glasgow grew from a small rural settlement on the River Clyde to become the largest seaport in Britain. Expanding from the medieval bishopric and royal burgh, and the later establishment of the University of Glasgow in the 15th century, it became a major centre of the Scottish Enlightenment in the 18th century. From the 18th century the city also grew as one of Great Britain's main hubs of transatlantic trade with North America and the West Indies.
With the onset of the Industrial Revolution, the population and economy of Glasgow and the surrounding region expanded rapidly to become one of the world's pre-eminent centres of chemicals, textiles and engineering; most notably in the shipbuilding and marine engineering industry, which produced many innovative and famous vessels. Glasgow was the "Second City of the British Empire" for much of the Victorian era and Edwardian period, although many cities argue the title was theirs.

From a declining industrial centre with widespread pessimism about its future, Scotland's biggest city has been transformed into a vibrant, dynamic city hailed as one of the hippest spots in Europe. A large student population has given the city a youthful, progressive character and, with thumping nightlife, one of the strongest live music scenes in the UK, plus first-rate shopping. Glasgow continues to assert itself as one of Britain's most appealing destinations. With several outstanding art galleries, including the high...
https://www.expedia.com/Edinburgh.d6069845.Destination-Travel-Guides The Scottish capital of Edinburgh is one of the world’s most beautiful cities. Its Old Town and Royal Mile are filled with the ghosts of medieval merchants, body snatchers, and poets, while its Georgian-styled New Town shines with the glories of the Scottish Enlightenment. To see Edinburgh in all her glory, climb to Arthur’s Seat, the highest of the city’s seven peaks. Some historians believe this was the site of King Arthur’s legendary castle Camelot. Nearby, on another volcanic crag, rises Edinburgh Castle, the very symbol of Scotland itself. Over the last eleven centuries, this castle has been laid siege to 26 times but still it stands, a testimony to the indomitable spirit of the Scots. Edinburgh has long held...

http://bestflights.co.za/europe/scotland/glasgow - Visit for more information on Glasgow, Scotland Glasgow takes great pride in its rich history that includes many influential inventors, writers, and architects. Modern Glasgow is reinventing itself at a staggering pace, especially obvious along the River Clyde.
Emerald-green fields, hills covered by heather, sheep herds, lakes, beautiful castles and forts… This is Scotland, and of course the men wearing tartan, pipe music and whiskey. The character of the country on the Northern part of the British island can not be missed. Because of their monument status, the castle of Edinburgh and 16 thousand other buildings are under protection. During the summer, several festivals and cultural events here and in Glasgow await the visitors. The old castles, forts and monasteries tell us about a long and eventful past and such heroes as Wallace ‘The Braveheart’ or Rob Roy. Their deeds were sung by such Scottish poets and writers as Sir Walter Scott, Robert Louis Stevenson or Robert Burns. Scotland is famous of its Celtic monuments, the beautiful landscape of ...
Scotland is such a different country! I expected it to be just like England, but it was so amazing seeing how different the culture was and yet how similar. Witness Scotland's history from the buildings and statues at George Square. George Square is pretty much the historic center of Glasgow. As the main city square, flanked by beautiful buildings, it reflects the story and history of Glasgow and in many ways that is Scotland. Many well known historical personalities of Glasgow have their statues here. The most prominantly placed on a center collumn is that of Sir Walter Scott, a renowned novelist. Here is James Watt, who invented the steam engine. Poet Robert Burns. Queen Victoria. Interestingly, there is no statue of King George III, for whom this square was established in the late 18th century. When this square was laid out it was actually a grassy area. Only recently has this red surface been placed here. The Square is surrounded by v...

Anthony Foley: Glasgow Warriors swept away in sea of Munster emotion It might seem peculiar to begin this most Munster of stories with a comment from a Leinsterman, but in a week that made no sense, maybe it's apt, in a strange kind of way. The loss of Anthony Foley transcended provincial borders and national borders. It even transcended sport. People with no connection to Killaloe, where he was laid to rest on Friday, or Limerick, where his memory was evoked so thunderously on Saturday, were moved by the tragedy of his wife and two young boys left behind to deal with the cataclysm of his death. So we begin not with the epic at Thomond Park but with a slow walk down the back streets of Foley's home town, the funeral cortege following his coffin from the gates of St Flannan's church to t...
