Sexism or gender discrimination is prejudice or discrimination based on a person's sex or gender. Sexism can affect any gender, but it is particularly documented as affecting women and girls. It has been linked to stereotypes and gender roles, and may include the belief that one sex or gender is intrinsically superior to another. Extreme sexism may foster sexual harassment, rape, and other forms of sexual violence.
According to Fred R. Shapiro, the term "sexism" was most likely coined on November 18, 1965, by Pauline M. Leet during a "Student-Faculty Forum" at Franklin and Marshall College. Specifically, the word sexism appears in Leet's forum contribution "Women and the Undergraduate", and she defines it by comparing it to racism, stating in part (on page 3): "When you argue ... that since fewer women write good poetry this justifies their total exclusion, you are taking a position analogous to that of the racist—I might call you in this case a 'sexist' ... Both the racist and the sexist are acting as if all that has happened had never happened, and both of them are making decisions and coming to conclusions about someone’s value by referring to factors which are in both cases irrelevant."
Dame Helen Lydia Mirren, DBE (née Mironoff; born 26 July 1945), is an English actor. Mirren began her acting career with the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1967, and is one of the few performers who have achieved the Triple Crown of Acting, having won the Academy Award for Best Actress in 2007, after two previous nominations, for her performance as Queen Elizabeth II in The Queen. In 2015 she won the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play, after two previous nominations, for her performance in The Audience, in which she also portrayed Elizabeth II. The Audience was written by Peter Morgan, who also wrote The Queen. Mirren won her first of several Emmy Awards in 1993 for her performance as police detective Jane Tennison on the acclaimed ITV series Prime Suspect, which ran for a total of seven seasons between 1991 to 2006.
Some of her other notable film roles include Marcella in the 1984 film Cal, for which she won the Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Actress, The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover (1989), The Madness of King George (1994), Teaching Mrs. Tingle (1999), Gosford Park (2001), Calendar Girls (2003), The Last Station (2009), Hitchcock (2012), and The Hundred-Foot Journey (2014). Released on the PBS website last week, 'Are you sexist? Take this quiz' appears gauge the level of 'hostile' and 'benevolent' sexism present in the character of respondents - however - around 90% of the way through it's wordy preamble we find: "These 22 questions aren’t designed to diagnose a respondent as sexist or not". I would never expect a tacky Mickey Mouse quiz like this to actually have the capability of diagnosing respondents as 'sexist or not', but in a strange way, the world would be a bit nicer place if the airheads that produced the quiz believed it did. Does that make sense? Take the quiz and tell me what you scored: http://www.pbs.org/newshour/rundown/are-you-sexist-take-this-quiz Regards, Bearing Want more Bearing more often? A 1975 interview of actress Helen Mirren is receiving new attention for its staggering levels of sexism. Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian, hosts of The Young Turks, break it down. Tell us what you think in the comment section below. http://tytnetwork.com/join "In 1975, up-and-coming theater actress Helen Mirren was interviewed by Michael Parkinson, the host of a popular British “chat show.” What should have been a conversation focused on Mirren’s career—her upcoming turn in a production of Macbeth; her membership in the Royal Shakespeare Company; her expanding resume—was instead turned into a confrontation with Parkinson’s unabashed sexism. The good news is, Mirren was having none of it. In footage that’s been making the viral rounds in recent days, it’s clear that even then, the young actres...

My Twitter, for smaller thoughts: https://twitter.com/TheeNerdwriter As I said in the video, this is the kind of thing I love to do with The Nerdwriter: think about moral issues, try to clarify them and understand the intersection of the issue and my own (or our own) presumptions. I feel that the way school systems handle dress code is absolutely absurd, a bit demeaning, & honestly quite sexist. It shames girls into "covering up" for the "male gaze" & shames boys as well, suggesting that all they care about is girls' chest & thighs. Let's discuss... As a school project on asocial behavior, we have chosen to focus on the sexism women face in the Western world. Apart from a scientific article we wrote, we have also put together a small YouTube film about our project, most clips taken from recent commercials or movies.
