Kenneth “Supreme” McGriff is one of the most infamous black drug dealers in American history, thanks in part, to his feud with pop-culture mega star Curtis 50-Cent Jackson. But Supreme’s story starts long before hip-hop and the neatly packaged imagery of black “street life” invaded pop-culture and made guys like 50-Cent multi-millionaires many times over, in fact Supreme was part of the the backdrop in the early 1980’s that helped grow and commercialize the local New York culture of djays, breakdancers, graffiti, and, most of all, rappers, into the billion dollar industry it became.
Kenneth McGriff got his street name “Supreme” from his involvement with the 5 Percenter “movement”. The 5 percenters broke off from the Nation of Islam in the 1950’s and came to dominate the New York state prison system among black inmates. They still cast a long shadow over the streets of New York to this day, Jay-Z sports a 5 percenter medallion on occasion, and just recently white hipster rapper Action Bronson was publicly chastised by the Wu-Tang clan’s official 5 Percenter “consultant” Poppa-Wu for mimicking the rap style of rapper Ghostface Killer. So when young Ken McGriff started working the streets of Jamaica, Queens it was natural that he would end up running with the Nation of Gods and Earths as they call themselves and they liked giving themselves names like Justice, Knowledge, and Supreme to signify their enlightment.
So in the early 80’s McGriff rounded up some other young 5 Percenters in Southeast Queens to take advantage of the exploding cocaine business, carving out a lucrative street level business composed of numerous teenaged workers who sold crack by the nickel and dime to the tune of over a million dollars month on the street corners and the public housing of South Jamaica. They became known as the Supreme Team, and their leader Kenneth McGriff could be seen riding the streets of Queens in a special bullet proof Mercedes Benz.
To really understand Supreme you have to understand Jamaica, Queens. In the 2000 Census, Queens was the only major County in the entire United States where black household income was higher than white household income. Today, it’s probably still the largest concentration of black middle and upper middle class popultion in the country centered around neighborhoods like Hollis, Carrolton, and Jamiaca. South Jamaica was the rough part, the poor part of this vast middle class expanse, sharing a border along Linden avenue with the infamous Brookly neighborhood of East New York, to this day one the Big Apple’s most violent police precints.
Drug dealing in this corner of Queens had always been lucrative in south Jamaica because it was where all the black, and white, middle class buyers from the surrounding areas would come to buy. So when crack cocaine hit in ‘84, spots like Guy Brewer boulevard and the Baisley Projects became goldmines for the Supreme Team and other dealers.

All slaves were fully emancipated in 1838, with independence from the United Kingdom achieved on 6 August 1962.

Queens
Queens is the easternmost and largest in area of the five boroughs of New York City, geographically adjacent to the borough of Brooklyn at the western end of Long Island. Coterminous with Queens County since 1899, the borough of Queens is the second-largest in population (behind Brooklyn), with a census-estimated 2,321,580 residents in 2014, approximately 48% of them foreign-born. Queens County is also the second-most populous county in New York, behind the neighboring borough of Brooklyn, which is coterminous with Kings County. Queens is the fourth-most densely populated county among New York City's boroughs, as well as in the United States. If each New York City borough were an independent city, Queens would also be the nation's fourth most populous city, after Los Angeles, Chicago and Brooklyn. Queens is the most ethnically diverse urban area in the world.
The differing character in the neighborhoods of Queens is reflected by its diverse housing stock ranging from high-rise apartment buildings, especially prominent in the more densely urban areas of western and central Queens, such as Jackson Heights, Flushing, Astoria, and Long Island City, to large, free-standing single-family homes, common in the eastern part of the borough, in neighborhoods that have a more suburban layout like neighboring Nassau County, such as Little Neck, Douglaston, and Bayside.

Curtis James Jackson III (born July 6, 1975), better known by his stage name 50 Cent, is an American rapper, actor, entrepreneur, investor, record, film, and television producer. Born in the South Jamaica neighborhood of the borough of Queens, Jackson began selling drugs at age twelve during the 1980s crack epidemic. Although he left drug-dealing to pursue a musical career, he was struck by nine bullets in a 2000 shooting. After Jackson released the compilation album Guess Who's Back? in 2002, he was discovered by Eminem and signed by Shady Records, Aftermath Entertainment and Interscope Records.
With the aid of Eminem and Dr. Dre (who produced his first major-label album, Get Rich or Die Tryin'), Jackson became one of the world's best selling rappers and rose to prominence with East Coast hip hop group G-Unit (which he leads de facto). In 2003 he founded G-Unit Records, signing his G-Unit associates Young Buck, Lloyd Banks and Tony Yayo. Jackson had similar commercial and critical success with his second album, The Massacre, which was released in 2005. He released his fifth studio album, Animal Ambition, in 2014 and is working on his sixth studio album: Street King Immortal, scheduled for release in 2016.

Kenneth “Supreme” McGriff is one of the most infamous black drug dealers in American history, thanks in part, to his feud with pop-culture mega star Curtis 50-Cent Jackson. But Supreme’s story starts long before hip-hop and the neatly packaged imagery of black “street life” invaded pop-culture and made guys like 50-Cent multi-millionaires many times over, in fact Supreme was part of the the backdrop in the early 1980’s that helped grow and commercialize the local New York culture of djays, breakdancers, graffiti, and, most of all, rappers, into the billion dollar industry it became.
Kenneth McGriff got his street name “Supreme” from his involvement with the 5 Percenter “movement”. The 5 percenters broke off from the Nation of Islam in the 1950’s and came to dominate the New York state prison system among black inmates. They still cast a long shadow over the streets of New York to this day, Jay-Z sports a 5 percenter medallion on occasion, and just recently white hipster rapper Action Bronson was publicly chastised by the Wu-Tang clan’s official 5 Percenter “consultant” Poppa-Wu for mimicking the rap style of rapper Ghostface Killer. So when young Ken McGriff started working the streets of Jamaica, Queens it was natural that he would end up running with the Nation of Gods and Earths as they call themselves and they liked giving themselves names like Justice, Knowledge, and Supreme to signify their enlightment.
So in the early 80’s McGriff rounded up some other young 5 Percenters in Southeast Queens to take advantage of the exploding cocaine business, carving out a lucrative street level business composed of numerous teenaged workers who sold crack by the nickel and dime to the tune of over a million dollars month on the street corners and the public housing of South Jamaica. They became known as the Supreme Team, and their leader Kenneth McGriff could be seen riding the streets of Queens in a special bullet proof Mercedes Benz.
To really understand Supreme you have to understand Jamaica, Queens. In the 2000 Census, Queens was the only major County in the entire United States where black household income was higher than white household income. Today, it’s probably still the largest concentration of black middle and upper middle class popultion in the country centered around neighborhoods like Hollis, Carrolton, and Jamiaca. South Jamaica was the rough part, the poor part of this vast middle class expanse, sharing a border along Linden avenue with the infamous Brookly neighborhood of East New York, to this day one the Big Apple’s most violent police precints.
Drug dealing in this corner of Queens had always been lucrative in south Jamaica because it was where all the black, and white, middle class buyers from the surrounding areas would come to buy. So when crack cocaine hit in ‘84, spots like Guy Brewer boulevard and the Baisley Projects became goldmines for the Supreme Team and other dealers.

Harmony Hall, a Victorian building that is a reminder of British colonial rule, is the name of an immaculate manor house located on a turn of the century plantation. Today it contains a handicraft centre and also a gallery which displays the works of indigenous artists. James Bond Beach is the name of the former winter retreat of the English author, Ian Fleming, who created British secret agent, James Bond. The famous author wrote most of his fourteen 007 novels on the small island of Golden Eye, of which five were set in Jamaica. Expansive fields of coconut palms dominate the Sun Valley Plantation which continues a tradition that dates back 250 years. In addition to bananas, citrus fruits, papayas, melons and apples, various spices are also cultivated on the plantation. World famous for their coffee beans, the Blue Mountains represent breathtaking primeval nature with a hint of adventure, a further experience in this sun-scorched island of dreams.

It was here, on the north coast, that Christopher Columbus landed in 1502 and where the Spanish were defeated by the British in a bloody battle for sovereign control of the island.Dunn`s River Falls is the name of a waterfall near to Ochos Rios, one of the island’s most well known natural attractions. In swimming attire, more than a million annual visitors attempt to climb through spraying torrents of water while linking hands in a human chain. In foaming cascades, the water plunges 200 metres down toward the sea over step-shaped limestone blocks and across an overgrown landscape of ferns and plants.Harmony Hall, a Victorian building that is a reminder of British colonial rule, is the name of an immaculate manor house located on a turn of the century plantation. In Jamaica, attacks, murder, and rape are common occurrences against LGBTI people, with little to no retribution or justice brought against those responsible.
After being forced from shacks, derelict buildings, and their own families, many homeless LGBTI Jamaicans have found refuge in the storm drainage systems of Kingston — known locally as the gully. For trans girls and gay men unable or unwilling to hide their sexuality, the sense of community and relative safety the gully provides acts as a welcome sanctuary, and for many, a hope of change to come.
VICE News travelled to the New Kingston area to see what LGBTI life is like in Jamaica — where just being who you are can mean living a life underground.
This unique community has found solace in the lyrics of street life and struggle of the recently incarcerated singer Vybz Kartel, a national hero of sorts and considered "The Voice of the Jamaican Guetto" by many. Fortunately Marcia, a humble street vendor struggling to survive as a single mother, discovers the world of dancehall. Through it she finds more than great music and hot relationships, she finds a way to a better life. By day, she toils on the hot Kingston streets and by night she becomes "the mystery lady", the new star of the dancehall. Here is her chance to escape the clutches of Larry, who under the guise of helping her hard-pressed family is actually after her eldest daughter, Tanya.
